So, this has been a fun afternoon....

Splitting migraine kicked in about 5:45. I rarely get them, but this one was particularly bad. Had a few pain meds from a recent procedure of my wife's left over and figured "Screw it. Taking one of those and killing this." Not 10 minutes after I take it my phone rings. It's my supervisor. He's letting me know that our CEO has informed him that he has to let me go. So, now I'm 45 days away from being out of work. Yay!

Interestingly enough, when I went to LinkedIn to do a quick check-in with my network, I noticed that yesterday was my 6th year anniversary with the company. Happy freaking anniversary, I guess.

The fun part, though, is that with the Percocet kicking in halfway through the phone call I really don't care yet and decided it'd be a great idea to come post about it on the internet. :)

Man, the idea of freaking job seaching makes me cringe. It's been so long since I've actually had to do it(my last three gigs have been positions where I knew someone at the company and were found when I wasn't really looking) I'm way out of practice.

tl:dr: "Will work for food" etc, etc., etc.

 
Just don't do anything online while hopped up on goofballs that will cripple your job search. In particular, stay off Twitter.

 
Day one at new job and talked to my boss more today than my last boss in 6 months. Liking this position a lot and feel content at work again. :thumbup:

Damn, good luck.

 
Saw my mom and my dad. As broken hips go, this one isn't too bad. The break is actually on the upper femur. According to the orthopedic surgeon, her prognosis is reasonably good, except for all of the risks related to her advanced age.

She is fired up to have the surgery and insists that she won't recover at a recovery center/nursing home and that she won't be using a cane or walker. She says she has way too many things to do to let this slow her down too much.

It looks better than it sounded when I first heard the news. The risk of complications from general anesthesia, the surgery itself and the recovery process aren't inconsequential, but there isn't much you can do about that. When you are 84 I think everything entails at least a moderate amount of risk.

That sucks. I got fired once, a few years back, and it was an absolutely awful feeling.

Wrote a 20 page white paper as part of my new position here which outlines a 5 year plan and proposes several billion dollars in savings that is getting praise from several muckity mucks here. Celebrated by putting an offer down on a house at the tippity top of my range (not really - was already looking, but still).

 
The anesthesiologist gets to charge more for patients over age 70.

Also, it's perfectly OK if RL's mom needs to go to a rehab hospital for a while.

Just got home from the hospital. The doctor said that the surgery went as well as it could have. No excess bleeding (despite my mom's blood thinners), she was totally stable throughout the surgery, etc..

None of that assures that complications won't arise, but so far so good.

Thanks(to everyone for the well wishes).

Now that the drugs have worn off I'm more exasperated than anything. I didn't get let go because of anything I did or didn't do. I got let go because of other people's inability to do their job, and some dishonesty to boot, which led to lack of profit. So, now the company gets to do its second round of cutbacks since January. Guess who'll still have a job in a month though?

I've said for at least ten years that "working for The Man" is a fool's errand. A partner and I have been trying to make a go of it on the side with an LLC for the past 5 years, in hopes we could work for ourselves 100%. I still have that on my plate, which helps soften the blow of this a bit, but it isn't near enough work to be self-sustaining yet.

Starting to think I should just go into hock and become a slum lord, or something. Those guys seem to make money hand over fist.

In the meantime, if anyone is in the market for a devastatingly handsome 3D animator and modeler/graphic and interactive designer/mograph/branding/illustrator-y type guy with a load of experience...

So you can, like, draw and stuff? How's your sketchpad drawing skills? Can you sketchpad better than Tre? He's pretty good.

 
Sorry to here that RL. While not as bad as that I get to clean my basement floor due ro a clogged drain that backed up. Also hot water tank died due to water damage. On a good note we rent so I don't have to pay for plumber or tank. And the water that backed up was 'clean' water so no sewage. Still it will be a pain in the ###

A 23-year-old man has reportedly been arrested after the release of a surveillance video that shows a young boy being slapped in the face and falling to the ground in a Bakersfield grocery store.

Justin Whittington, 23, of Bakersfield, was taken into custody by police Thursday night and questioned about the incident in the video, KERO-TV reported.

Whittington was booked on suspicion of assault on a child, a felony, according to the Kern County Sheriff’s Office. His bail was set at $1,000,000.

Police were able to quickly locate the suspect after it was posted and shared online Thursday, officials told KERO.

The child was not seriously injured in the incident, which occurred at Vest Market in the 1800 block of Chester Avenue.

The video shows him running through the aisles of the store. The man runs after the boy, slaps him, then picks him up off the ground.

The child is holding his face and apparently crying as a woman takes his hand and leads him out of the market.

literally no sleep saturday through tuesday. tuesday night I had a disturbing hallucination while I was awake. wednesday night I slept a few hours. last night I got 6 hours, so I think I'm over it.

this happens to me sometimes...about once a year, sometimes two years. insomnia coupled with intense depression(?) (more like self-loathing). I go into a tailspin. it doesn't last, and I can feel myself pulling out of it. strangely, I'm cranking #### out at work at a pretty impressive pace and was just complimented on the quality of my work product. no, I'm not bipolar, and I've seen shrinks--I don't even qualify as depressed.

oh, and have I mentioned the 24 year old is back? somehow, I'm thinking I'll get through this ;)
