GM's Thread About Everything/GM's Thread About Nothing (4 Viewers)

Girl Scout cookies are way overrated. Yeah, shocking, I know.
They're basically all preservative wafers, yeah...

Except for Samoas(not "Samoans", you Philistines). Those are the ####. Coconut is pretty freaking awesome already. Coconut with chocolate and caramel? You had me at "hello."

Don't even get me started on how the GS are pretty much just a racket to sell the damn things though. Just once I'd like to go into a grocery store here without getting grifted.

The fake ones at Walmart are delicious and way cheaper. Samoas - $1.78 and thin mints $1.28.
Tried those once hoping to beat the "Green Mafia's" system. I could tell the difference. :kicksrock:

But if you buy them from WalMart you aren't supporting an organization that teaches young women traditional values, like that homosexuality is unaccceptable.
It's a scam. That $4 box my daughter got something like 55 cents.

I would eat the hell out of that. You are doing this the right way.

I'd probably subscribe to your "Daily Worker" ripoff if you ever chose to publish.

"Scam" is strong. I think the Boy Scouts get a lot higher % from their overpriced popcorn crap, but they move a lot fewer units because the product isn't good and the pricing is a joke.

The thin margins on thin mints isn't as big an issue because they sell like hotcakes.

Blue cheese? What, do you think you're better than us?

Back in my day, the GS had to go door-to-door to sell the cookies. Now they plop their lazy butts down at the grocery store entrance and let the lemmings come to them. They should have to work for their sales! /oldmanrant

I just want to say, "Way to go fellas" Page 48 was an inspiring page. Reminded me of the GMTAN.

Good times, good times.............

They got my wife and I coming out of the store yesterday. I saw the table and kept walking. I got about 3 steps before I realized my wife was caught in their tractor beam. She bought 4 boxes while I stood there and gave disapproving looks. Pretty sure I showed her.

Next thing you know, he's going to be putting raisins on the thing.

Maybe even the golden kind.

I put a deposit down today for a townhouse I will be renting while my 3 siblings visit. For Thanksgiving.

Which brings to mind a couple questions:

1) should I hire a caterer/personal chef or attempt to do it myself? I'm relatively adept in the kitchen but I've never hosted Thanksgiving or Christmas.

2) RELATED: I know next to nothing on various methods to prep or cook a bird. I've read a little bit with disinterest over the years. How hard can it be, right?

3) RELATED: How long does it take to defrost a bird? Or should I get some organic never been fed anything but wheatgrass protein shakes fresh bird? There's like a million different options here, right?

OK, it's March 9th. If you don't feel like answering, let me know how many more months before you'll stop ignoring my turkey questions.

TIA

Thanksgiving is easy from a cooking skill POV but is typically a lot of food so can be a lot of work. Which way to go depends on how much others are going to help out. Don't buy a frozen bird. Don't buy an organic bird. Buy a never frozen turkey mill bird.

No more Thanksgiving questions until November.

I have no issue with frozen bird...put it in the fridge 3-4 days prior to cooking. If you still have some ice buildup in the cavity just run it under cold water

We usually use a roaster oven so the regular oven is free for other stuff, but tends to end up a little on the drier side

Anyway it's not rocket surgery and there are more ideal methods, but just cooking it in the oven is pretty damn easy...just make sure to let it rest 20-30 min before slicing

To get moister you can brine or inject with some stuff. One time we also did some plastic cooking bag method which made it nice and juicy

Dry brining is the easiest and also effective. You can also do stuffing in the bird without ruining it. Dry brine, rub the skin with baking powder and you get a nice juicy bird with crisp delicious skin.

My wife was 9 months pregnant and ready to burst Thanksgiving 2012... We decided we were going to stay home and do nothing. It was brought to my attention that Boston Market caters Turkey Day, so I gave it a shot.

It was delicious, possibly the best Thanksgiving I can remember... I love seeing family, eating, talking with everyone etc. etc., but we stayed home, ate like animals all day and laid on the couch without an interruption. I'd give them a shot if your family isn't pretentious. If they are, Whole Foods supposedly makes a great TG meal too.

Can we declare an Official GMTAN Moratorium on the Thanksgiving talk until at least early October?

Is that motion seconded? Do we have a quorum?

This guy was at a party I was at on Saturday night. He's a friend of a friend.

Pretty much the ******* love child of SLB and Walter White. Terrible picture but trust me on this.
Between the yellow seat cushion and the wooden window shades, I assume this party was at an elderly folks pool/beach club?
Nope. My buddy's house. He's forgotten more about DIY than you and I will ever learn. And that's not a seat cushion. It's the wall.

I think the Top 3 kinds (TMs, Samoas, Tag-a-Longs) are appropriately rated, the remainder are massively overrated.

They are an amazing fund raiser for the Girl Scouts though. Both of my step-sons are Boy Scouts and they sell a bunch of flavored popcorn products that aren't that great and are monstrously overpriced. Nobody would ever buy it without viewing it as a donation.
The Boy Scout popcorn price actually includes a designated "donation" amount, IIRC, so that a portion can be tax-deductible.

ETA:

Are my purchases on trails-end.com tax deductible?Because you actually receive products in exchange for your payment, only a portion of your purchase is tax deductible. The portion that is tax deductible is typically the difference in the amount you would normally pay if you bought a similar item at the grocery store vs. the price of the product you purchased on trails-end.com. Shipping and Handling charges are NOT tax deductible. We urge you to consult your tax professional to confirm this as well.

Military Donation:

When you purchase the Military Donation you are making a charitable contribution since you don't receive actual product in exchange for your payment. This means that the purchase should be 100% tax deductible. As always, make sure to double check this with your tax professional, as tax laws often change.
With Girl Scout cookies, the whole price is considered the cost of goods, and not a charitable contribution.

FC42 always gives bad advice. Regardless of topic, it's inviting Costanza to Career Day.

Drifter, on the other hand, is trending.

Okay, good chat, see you guys in 33 weeks.

For the Tanner Files: ran across a young girl named Khrysalis. Note in file states "name pronounced krih-SAW-liss." YCMIU :lmao:

I agree. Anyone who wants a donation should have to work for it.

Announce: Drifter and I buried the hatchet awhile ago. So now YOU know. We're now iFriends. Hugs, everyone, hugs.
