Congrats to everyone that had kids smarter and/or more dedicated than us slackers.

On the flip side I have a 20 year old living with us who also never got a "B" at University of Oregon. Got plenty of other letters, tho......
I know this isn't a contest, but believe me, buddy, I got you beat there. We're at our wits end. Just seems like such a hopeless situation. Feel like the worst parents in the world.

Well, I've talked about him in here a few times - a year ago at this time, I was maneuvering behind his back with his roommate to find another student to take over his very expensive lease down in Eugene. My son was just planning on living in Eugene without a well-paying job, without going to school and just coming home in Sept after failing out in spectacular fashion. It was very stressful and he didn't take it very well when I told him I found his replacement and that he was coming home in mid-June but it had to be done. I wasn't paying $900 a month for him to live down there after the stunt he pulled.

But to his credit, we hugged it out, told him he had a place to live - HIS HOME - as long as he needed, we don't need to re-litigate the past, let's just get to work, save some money and pay back the money owed to Oregon. And that's precisely what he's done. On X-mas even, he was promoted to manager, given a salary, benefits, 401K....a REAL job. He's paid back more than half of what he owes Oregon, got himself a 2020 Toyota Camry with financing, DJs on the side and has his smile back.

If he wants to continue his education - and I hope he does, but it's up to him - he'll have to do it through CC and over time, but that's okay. I think he'll be fine if he does or doesn't because he's proved to himself that if he works hard, puts his nose to the grindstone, does the right things, he'll be rewarded. Especially working for the company he's with now as they promote from within. Confidence needs a foundation and he built himself a firm one after messing the bed in college.
That gives me hope that one day maybe my son will figure it too. Impossible to even imagine at this point.

We all experience personal growth at different rates of speed and time. He's got great parents and is loved - that's super important. Hang in there, man.
I have never experienced personal growth.
let's not get together next time you're in town to discuss.

Started feeling weird at lunch on Friday. Headache, sinus pressure. I don't sick very often but it always seems like I'm susceptible to minor sinus infections and head colds from time to time. Wake up Saturday morning and instantly noticed this was different. Immediately went to urgent care and was diagnosed with walking pneumonia after chest x rays. Was miserable all weekend and finally feeling better today after a few days of antibiotics and an inhaler. Doc said it's been going around. No clue how I got it. I'm not in close contact with anyone, work from home and most of my activities are outside.

Good call listening to your body and not trying to tough it out. That seems easier said than done for many of us.

I had that in November. I get sinus infections at least once a year and yeah, this was certainly different.

Hope you're on the mend soon!

Yea...the Dr. was very complimentary that I decided to get in there so quickly....as a guy, she probably mentioned it 4 times. LOL

But something just seemed off. Especially the sharp pains at the back of my throat when coughing.

And...I am feeling better today. Thanks everyone!

Yeah my doctor told me something similar once. I could definitely be healthier than I am, lose a few pounds, etc. and when I brought this up as a concern, he said what matters is that you are here.
I wonder how many illnesses could be prevented by just going to the doctor when something feels off.

Holy crap! the sheer volume of stuff that was delivered to the house for me to do these at home IV administrations is impressive! Nurse is coming over sometime the next 2 hours to show me how to do it all. And I’m really glad she’s going to show me after seeing all the rigmarole. I thought, how hard can it be? Unscrew cap, install drip, put cap back on. Maybe it’s that simple, but it doesn’t look like it. 😬😬.

And the port in my arm is uncomfortable as all get out. Hope that subsides.

This bacteria in my system can end up being fatal if ignored and turns into sepsis. Go to the dr people.

Make sure you tell the nurse it is uncomfortable. Probably shouldn't be uncomfortable.

I think it’s me being a baby, but I’ll definitely tell her.

Pretty straight forward but exacting process. Nurse will come again tomorrow to make sure I’ve got it. Anyone want an IV poll when I’m done with this?

Floppinho has taken a musical theater songwriting class the last two year with the NY Youth Symphony- life-changing for him as a musician and songwriter. He's learned and grown so much there, and each Wednesday is the best day of the week for him- he just loves going, collaborating and learning. As you could imagine, the kids (ranging from 12 to post-college) are a rag-tag group of mostly outcast mostly stereotypical musical theater types. This class is them getting to live in their perfect, dream world surrounded by like-minded- and quite frankly- brilliant peers.

They had their end of year show last night at Joe's Public Theater (where Hamilton got its start). College vocal majors performed most of the songs, as well as some of the kids that wrote them. it's a joyous, raucous, heart-melting event. There are some kids in this who will be in this industry- Columbia U theater major, my son's co-writer, and especially the 12yo who wrote the best songs and gave the best performances of them (better than the college kids who are studying this for a career!)... maybe Floppinho if he chooses to focus on it.

And again- the leitmotif was this, possibly unique in the country, class was their absolute happy-place that has allowed them to pursue their dream with like-minded peers.

Class director announced at the show amidst all this euphoria, that because of cuts to NEA funding the class likely won't happen next year.

tl;dr- dammit.

That was meant to be a rant about NEA grant funding for the class being cut, putting the class's future (and all of these outcasts possible future) in dire jeopardy.

used to work with a guy who was the polar opposite of me that would complain about any funding of arts, public works, etc. and it always boggled my mind that there are people out there who think art is useless.

for sure thought it was shtick, but he proved time and again that anything beyond stale, sanitary and lifeless was a complete waste to him.

sad that we live in a time where things like this are being cut. absolute nonsense that it impacts kids, too.

So my 14 year old daughter joined the drama and theater department at her high school here in Wisconsin. She did this in junior high so she had some experience there. She is a freshman at the high school - we moved here last May if you all recall.

Last night was their final production of the year. They did (3) productions:

1. A one act play, where they went to state and won pretty much every major award they offer. Our school is only 340 students.

2. A musical.

3. A children's play, where they performed for the younger kids in elementary and middle school, and then for the night performance for the community.

These performances are always well attended. For the first two performances she did crew - basically lights, set design and creation, costumes - basically all the behind the scenes stuff.

For the last play she did some of that but also performed on stage in a minor role where she appeared in the last 6 scenes or so. She had a line or two as well.

After the show they handed out awards for the kids for all year. My daughter won Most Outstanding Freshman for the Drama & Theater Department. These awards are voted on by the kids in the theater group.

So for my daughter to win this as an incoming freshman to a school where she knew nobody was an incredible moment for her, me, and her mom. I'm damn near crying about it right now typing this out. She put herself out there big time and really flourished from the get go.

Could not be prouder of her.

Fwiw... Spoke to a coworker about it, and he mentioned his friend who is a Transportation Engineering PHD candidate, finishing up her degree... Except the program she was working on also lost its funding. But I mean... Transportation and most scientific research, like the arts- not really important.

Was not aware plays were competitive... Serious business.
Yeah, we didn't either. Was a pleasant surprise.

Love to see the arts getting the love they need. When I read stories like what's going on with your son - it makes me seethe with rage.
What's great about theater, it provides a really welcoming environment for everybody- which often attracts kids that might not have an immediate built in peer group of their own. Slightly different than team sports that way.

My son, like your daughter, was brand new in 9th grade to his school and didn't know anybody. But did the musical in the fall and immediately had a good crew of peers of all grades. He's not part of the theater crowd now in his Sr year, but is still good friends with all of them... And lots of overlap with the music kids from that.

But both of my kids have done theater for years... Never seen or heard of theater competitions here. Are there cheerleaders and referees (besides the parents)?

No cheerleaders as far as I know.

As far as the competition part, they have judges that go see your performance at your main school performance. They sit in the crowd and you wouldn't know other than they have a notepad where they are taking notes. So they have to qualify to get there.

Once they are there, they perform in front of parents and judges basically. At the end they award a lot of different awards - I couldn't tell you all the categories and what not. But they don't really declare a state champion per se.

They just give out awards to the best of the best after they judge all the performances and actors.

**** yeah

Had a picc line put in today to deal with a very resistant bacteria. Neat! Glad to have it figured out though, I’ve felt like **** for a while and have gotten very sick 3 times since November. Go antibiotics Go! Hopefully this batch works. No sepsis :pickle:
Where’s the infection? Which bacteria?

I love exploring little towns across the Heartland. Tonight, I'm in Pittsburg (no "h"), Kansas. It's a decent-sized town and is a college town. That said... there's no taxi service here and apparently only a couple of folks regularly drive for Uber/Lyft. I generally like finding a local haunt to grab dinner and a few beers, but I absolutely refuse to drive the rental car if I'm having even one beer, so Uber/Lyft it is. Took a good 20+ minutes to locate one at around 5:30pm and have the driver show up. The guy's car absolutely reeked of piss. The place I went to (fun, btw) was 2.1 miles away... so if I decided to walk back to my hotel it'd be a 45-minute jaunt. Ouch. The guy who drove me said he usually stops driving around 7pm, so I'd probably be chit-outta-luck for a ride home. But I checked the Uber app around 8:30 and saw a driver was online and it happened to be the same guy, so I rode back to my hotel in the piss-mobile and it took some serious work to not vomit from the smell.

The same organization that runs high-school football in Texas also runs the One-Act Play competition. I was named to the All-Star Cast in district competition my junior year, although the play was a turgid dumpster fire. The faculty excluded me from the cast my senior year, when it became clear I would take over :lmao:

Oh, must be an ESBL-producer. I just gave a lecture on this very topic, so feel free to DM, if questions.

I almost texted you but the drs seem to know what they’re doing now that the bacteria is identified.

Sounds about right.

That's my college town.

I did get your PM - would have definitely had a beer in KC. Hell, I may have gone to Pittsburg with you. Where did you go for dinner?

it is awesome that your daughter is thriving up there chiefs it makes me really happy keep on keepin on man

I prolly discussed it here at some point, but 24 Hour Fitness is a complete scam/sham/POS company. I signed a "lifetime" membership 20+ years ago for at least $1k. All I had to do was pay a yearly fee of $20 and I could go to any club in the country. Well, they somehow "amended" said contract about 15 years ago and said it wasn't "all clubs" but since I had moved to Austin, they were "nice enough" to change my "home club" to a local one to me there. (edit - yeah, that was a lot of "quotes")

Well, fast forward to this year and I went to my new "home club" here in SoCal to sign my 14-year old daughter up for a membership. The "sales" guy there is looking at his computer quizzically as he opens my membership details and is like "huh, your membership is set to be canceled next month".

I went through 2 months' worth of trying to call their corporate offices and email them and got no real reason why my membership got the boot.

And yeah, guess who called me out of the blue yesterday trying to sell me a membership? I laughed at them and told them to F off, basically.

A fitness club, tell them the first workout is to pound sand.

It's amazing how a ****ty morning commute can mess up a day.

10 min subway ride turned into close to an hour.. with requisite increasingly angry, frustrated and irrational fellow commuters making it worse.

Eta... Point being, I'm still feeling irrationally angry and frustrated
