Golf courses in Phoenix area (1 Viewer)

I'm looking for some opinions about the golf courses around the Phoenix area. Which ones do you like and which ones you wouldn't play again.

Private or public? General area? Cost preference/range? Is this for a guys' trip?

Public courses primarily around Scottsdale but willing to drive a little.
It is for a 5 day guys trip.
Top end price in the high $200s.

I really like We Ko Pa and am playing there again next week.

I've seen We Ko Pa on a couple of Phoenix best courses lists. We did a guys trip last year where we played golf in the morning and a Cactus League game in the afternoon/evening. We Ko Pa was one we wanted to play but couldn't make the travel time work from Scottsdale and still make a BB game.

The courses we played were:
Dove Valley
Orange Tree
McCormick Ranch
Rancho Manana

We really liked McCormick Ranch and Rancho Mañana.

IMO having played them:

Best public courses without regard to location or costs:
1. Quintero
2. Gold Canyon - Dinosaur
3. We Ko Pa - Cholla
4. Troon North - Monument
5. Boulders - North
6. TPC Scottsdale - Champions course (Note: this is NOT the one you see on TV, that's the stadium)
7. Grayhawk - either course
8. Southern Dunes

Best bang for the buck:
1. Lookout Mountain
2. We Ko Pa
3. Whirlwind - Devil's Claw
4. Raven at Verrado
5. The Legacy

Best group options in the Scottsdale proximity (accounting for location, cost, and opportunity to buy packages for 36 holes):
1. We Ko Pa
2. Troon North
3. Talking Stick (merely for the 36 holes and location - the courses aren't that great but if you're staying close by...)
4. TPC Scottsdale (it's cool to play the courses as you see them on TV and the location is great - I just think it's overpriced)
5. Lookout Mountain

Lots of significantly better private course options I could give as well as options up north but doesn't seem like those are options.

Respectfully, in terms of quality of the courses there are way better options than these. The courses are nice for budget and location, and they're probably much easier courses in terms of playability so if your group doesn't have good golfers they make sense, but these pale in comparison to some other options.

I was there last January (played Lookout Mountain with Woz. Would definitely recommend. Great deal at less than $130, even in peak season)

The Troon North and Greyhawk courses were great. Troon North Monument was the best conditioned course I've played. But the price at that point was way over your budget (over $400 per round). I was there at the absolute most expensive time of the year (the week before the waste management) so it should be cheaper now. Just not sure HOW cheap.

Boulders was a MAJOR disappointment for me (And pretty much everyone else who played the course in like a 6 month window if you read the online reviews). Pretty scenery and a fairly interesting layout but the conditioning was an absolute joke. Apparently there was some sort of dispute going on between the course and the local housing community that resulted in them cutting off the maintenance tap. Also, the "new greens" were in terrible shape and as hard as a rock. Not sure if things have changed in the past 13 months. Buyer beware. Also.....if you're someone who gets a lot of snacks and drinks on the course, the cost of stuff there is hilariously high.....(like $30 beers from what I remember).

Yeah that was an awesome time.

Didn't know that about the Boulders. Been a few years since I've played there but that's a big bummer if the conditions are still poor.

Recent reviews seem to indicate that they turned things around again. So it may have just been a temporary blip on the radar.

But the complaints about bev cart pricing are still very real. Prices are apparently insane.

Considering I could have spent that day playing We-Ko Pah, Quintero or the other Troon course, I was more than a little annoyed.

Is Quintero public these days? that place is awesome
Yep, still public. It's just in a distant location.

Wickenburg Ranch recently went fully private which is a bummer. That place was amazing and nothing beats some drunken presses on Lil' Wick after a burger.

Troon North is one of my all time faves. TPC front 9 sort of boring but back 9 is really great. Really want to play Quintero one of these years……

My guys last trip before kids golf trip, which @Zow offered lots of good thoughts on (replicated above I think) ended up being Greyhawk, Troon North, and We Ko Pa.

All three were great. We Ko Pa was amazingly cool. Greyhawk was the best course I think but also most expensive. I think Troon was good but the closest of the three to "nondescript nice course."

I also highly recommend The Short Course at Mountain Shadows. It's all par 3s, I think the longest was like 150. Quick afternoon round the day we flew in with my other buddy that arrived early. It was super fun. And a great warmup for a golf trip.

@Zow set me up for success on a Scottsdale golf trip a couple years back.

The one I remember really enjoying from his list was the We Ko Pa courses and then a casino right there.

Damn. Is it truly fully private now? That was my favorite course in Arizona. And I agree about Lil Wick, especially under the lights.

Interesting because I thought Greyhawk was sort of nondescript and Troon was great. I guess it would be boring if we all had the same favorites!

And we’re always biased to courses we played well. My favorite course in the world is Kingsbarnes in Scotland. No coincidence I shot lights out that day

Yep. Huge bummer to my regular golf group. We played there multiple times per year. Great times.
