I have been with FBGs since before it was FBGs. But the time has come to take my leave. As I was in the process of completing the Pacific War in the WW2 thread, I was suddenly and unexpectedly banned. I have always said that Joe and his people have every right to ban anyone they wish for whatever reason they wish, but I am to old to put up with a tinhorn deputy with an impaired sense of humor.
The reason for the banning was the following post. It was a joke; a little heavy handed perhaps, but a joke nonetheless.
Posted by Bobby Layne:
“tidbit: Taylor was the last president to own slaves while in office.”
My follow up post:
“Except for Clinton and his ### slaves.”
In deference to the tender sensibilities of the moderator, I will not repeat the three letter word starting with S, and which is never mentioned in polite Victorian society. But the post was deleted, and I was banned.
In leaving, may I just say how much I love this country. I was born in Cuba and I came here as an immigrant by way of Venezuela, when I was 19. I served in the US Army, and I got my degree at NYU and my MBA at Wharton. I believe this country to be the last best hope on earth. I have had personal experience with Communists and tyrants from early in my life, and it undoubtedly has colored my political views.
I am concerned at the drift in this country toward the soft despotism of a government accumulating ever more power. In the Lord of the Rings, Galadriel rejects the Ring of Power, fearing its corrupting influence. Who in our ruling elite today would have the strength of character to reject the corrupting influence of power? In the end, however, I have great faith in the good judgment and common sense of the American people.
There are many on this site that I respect very highly. I have assisted timschochet in his WW2 thread, and in the World's Greatest Draft. As the product of a culture which has honed its debating skills across the dinner table, he is argumentative and bright (and wordy). He and I disagree on many things, but he has my respect. On the other side of the political threads I gained great admiration for Doctor Detroit and NCCommish. For the good guys, I have always liked Bueno; also Chadstroma, jonessed, Ditkaless wonders, Parrothead, Mookie Blaylock...I know I am forgetting many. I have crossed swords with some of you others in the heat of battle, and I have been sarcastic at times. I apologize and beg your forgiveness.
I have a great deal of respect for Joe, who has often had to steer his Bryant Boat between Scylla and Charybdis. I wish him well.
I won't be renewing my subscription either. There are other sites with good info, and I usually make my own decisions anyway. I will miss Borbely on IDP's.
I had promised to complete the Pacific War on the WW2 thread by last Monday. Because of the banning, I was unable to do so, but I will post twice more on that thread today, to bring it to a close. I would have liked to have been a contributor on the Civil War thread, since I know much about it and I have walked the battlefields, but it was not to be.
Ave atque vale.
