Google Wireless Phone Service: The rollout is beginning (1 Viewer)

I'm interested but without pricing, the fact it's on sprint/t-mo network, and limited to Nexus 6 handsets inititally, it's kinda hard to find much to get excited about. Now, if they come to market with $20/mo text/talk service with $10/GB data... it's on.

It's my understanding that it's a data plan.....it's all data in the end. What you use, you pay for. The rate for text/voice, then the second rate for data is the biggest racquet of my lifetime. They'll obviously have to make translations as part of the rollout. Stuff like "10 minutes of talk time equals X bytes" etc.

When they started going away from some of their google voice features, I wondered how long it'd be before they got into the wireless world. Didn't take very long.

Things I do not currently (or very rarely) use that I am paying for in my current cell phone plan: (1) text messages, and (2) minutes. This type of plan seems right up my alley.

... but I am not buying a Nexus 6 to get in on it.

FYI, WSJ said it COULD be announced as early as today. Doesn't mean it will definitely be announced today.

Without details, its tough to know much about it. Being that its Google, I'm speculating that it will be low priced but force ads on you or something.

Lol. I type that and then go look and it is now announced. Still light on details:

Beginning as an early access program, Google is working with Sprint and T-Mobile to build Fi. The service is centered around three main areas of focus: high-quality connections, easy communication across networks, and a simple service experience.

Fi will put you on the best connection for you wherever you are. If your LTE signal isn't very strong, Fi will try to connect you to a Wi-Fi hotspot, for instance. The goal is to get the best data connection possible. Fi also supports features like talking and texting over Wi-Fi, and calls will be able to easily transition between Wi-Fi and cellular networks. Your Fi phone number will exist in the cloud so you can use it with any phone, tablet, or laptop.

In terms of pricing, Google hopes to keep things simple with Fi. For $20 per month, you get basic service, including talk, text, Wi-Fi tethering, and international coverage. For every 1GB of cellular data you add to your plan, you'll pay another $10 per month. So, if you use 3GB per month, you'll pay $50. You'll also get money back for the data on your plan that you don't use.

You can sign up now for the Google Fi Early Access Program. Currently, Project Fi is only compatible with the Nexus 6, developed with Fi in mind.

Pricing isn't all that great. I expected better.
:goodposting:

Though I do like the concept of having a separate phone number that can move. But I don't understand what it'd take to get a verizon phone working on a Sprint network etc. Is that just a sim card replacement?

Tennis or squash?

The best signal hoping feature is cool, but the pricing isn't competitive for an MVNO imo.
especially not a T-Mo & Sprint MVNO... add Verizon and AT&T to the mix and maybe that changes things.
Everyone knows you use T-Mobile and Sprint as your "test". They'll agree to just about anything to keep themselves afloat. Then, once you've worked out the kinks, you expand to others.

Biggest yawn inducing announcement since the Amazon phone.

So much speculation of something new, cool, inexpensive, innovative... and then the big reveal: we've invented oatmeal! But that's not all, you can throw in raisins if you're really feeling frisky.

I hoping for something new. Isn't this the same thing as republic wireless(only using sprint and tmobile towers)?

I don't know what republic wireless is so I can't answer that part. I know this is a pilot that google's doing, so this is the minimum they'll roll out over time. I doubt they leave it like this forever. Was a bit confused by the "so much speculation" angle as it was never really all that well publicized.

https://republicwireless.comYes, it is basically the same thing. Not a bad little service, but like Google, you have limited (but quality) phone options.

Meh... Anytime I hear "Sprint" I immediately lose any and all interest. Had to file a FTC complaint with Sprint last year to get out of my contract due to their service becoming SO TERRIBLE in our area. Had them for years, signed a new contract and 3 months later could not make a quality call from my home using their service. They DID give me a device that would piggy back off MY BROADBAND to provide service in 3G only.

Would gladly pay 2x as much as I pay with Verizon now than to go back to Sprint. While they ARE willing to cut you data plan in 1/2, they cut your coverage in 1/2 as well.

Google will need to get the big guys involved for this to have a chance.

This.

Similar story with me and Sprint. I had them when the first 4G wimax came out. It never got any better because they decided to go LTE. So they sold us on an 4G network that was "always improving" and it never got any better in 2 years. Go figure, they abandoned it...

I'm happily paying about 1/3 more for Verizon.

All those crappy affordable cell services like boost, ting, etc. all seem to run on T-Mobile or sprint. I'm lumping google in with those for now.

Interesting...so this will be google's starting point. No idea where it'll go, but with their networks being introduced slowly to provide internet access, I like the direction they're going in.

Google does everything well. I'm interested.
Plus?

It's amazing how many things they have their hands in. Along with the fields where they've led and innovated and are now dominating (search, email), they also come after everyone else's niches. Sometimes it works, sometimes not. But they're not shy about discarding a losing hand.

Project Loon probably deserves its own thread. Just crazy stuff.

I didn't mean by a general audience, I meant speculation by the TWiT type crowd.

Pretty sure this is going to give you Sprint and T-Mobile's network combined and use whichever has better service at the time - not sure if that's been done before?

I had T-Mobile and switched to Sprint like a big dummy and T-Mobile was way better. I live in an area that's supposedly LTE Sprint everywhere but sometimes can't even refresh twitter in the bathroom stall at work. Obviously YMMV depending on your area.

Yeah, that's why I said only using Sprint AND T-mobile towers.

I also have to use T-mobile because of my particular reception but there are a lot of people that will likely get better reception just with Verizon for instance than Tmobile/Sprint towers together. I guess being a T-moblie customer the price just seems like a yawn as well because I get 5gb for $30. The Google price structure might be compelling to someone coming from Verizon but Tmobile has had some pretty good plans for awhile now. The Google plan would end up costing me much more, and I would be forced to use a nexus 6 just to use it. I guess it's an option for those that are very, very light data users... but if that's the case it would be hard for me to suggest going out and getting a nexus 6 just for this plan. Freedompop probably makes more sense for those people.
