Gostkowski's opportunities vs Vinatieri's (1 Viewer)

:fishing: ?

The answer is easy: the Pats don't trust Gostkowski yet.

Also, they're 6-1 without him so there hasn't been much of a need for his services.

You'd really have to go through each gamebook to see if they were either going for it from the 30-40 yard line of the opponent rather than trying a long kick or going for it on 4ths, thus taking FG attempts away.

I'd hazard to guess that they are simply punching it in more often than settling for 3, but it is a decent question.

From the Gamebooks:

Game 1 - 4th and 2 on BUF 26, went for it, but only 2:00 left in game, up by only 2. Took a knee after that.

Game 2 - I found one blocked FG against the Jets.

Game 3 - Punt from Den 35 and -1 yard run on 4th down at the DEN 36, then another blocked FG from the 19.

Game 4 - Missed from 48 and scored a TD on 4th and Goal at the 1.

Game 5 - Went for it (and converted) on 4th and 1 at Miami 27, but kicked a shorter FG 3 plays later. Later punted at MIA 38 (too far). Same game (but later) went for at on 4th and 3 at the MIA 35, but under 4 minutes to go in a game in which they were up 10. Took a knee / victory formation a few plays later.

Game 6 - BUF - nothing of note.

Game 7 - MIN (MNF) - 4th and 5 on MIN 32, 4th Quarter, 8:38 left. Went for it. They were up 31-7. That's odd.

I see two missed chances at FGs.

Subscriber content team redzone production at #3 in the league, touchdown % as best in the league, and field goal% as lowest in the league! More importantly, their "zilch" % is about average, so they are not failing to score, they ARE punching it in rather than kicking, successfully.

Gostkowski hasn't had his feet put to the fire yet. Also, he's missed a few that one would have expected him to make this year. But, in fairness, I can remember Vinatieri missing a few like that in the first year or two of his NFL career, too, so let's not mean-mouth the rookie G-man just because he isn't as dependable as the 10-year vet.

Isn't he 6 for 7?ETA - 6 for 9, my error.I think 2 were blocked.

I picked him up and am starting him this week - think he will be a top Kicker as they give him more work the stretch run.

If I may, dump him and get another. I fell for that and was lucky to get a single FG

I'd rather have him then a guy like Rackers - at least NE scores - your not going to get shut out with him - maybe not a 10 pt game but definitely not shut out.

Thanks for the research Jeff and SeniorVBD.

6-9 attempts doesn't seem like enough to get into it. I wonder if they're not using him enough to get the necessary experience and keep his leg "sharp" and all. I can't recall ever thinking of such a thing with a K but since their game is so much about confidence I wonder.

He's 6 of 7, 2 were blocked.

How do you feel about that? 2 blocked I remember some K got a bunch blocked one year and got cut. I think it was when Parcells was with the G-men.Not his fault? no issue. Not his fault but kicker is responsible for the kicking game? Low kicks part of the prob?(angle, complete guess here)I mean it's either "just 2" or a pretty high percentage for blocks considerring how ya look at those 2.

One block was deffinately due to the wonderful "turf" at Gillette and the other was due a combination of good effort by the Jets/poor blocking/missed assignment... but it is a little strange that he hasn't got the opportunities yet. But like SeniorVBD/Jeff said the Pats are punching it in the redzone and I'll take that ANY day over settling for 30 yd field goals.

Can you explain this?
Prelude:Versus Denver, Sunday night: Pregame speculation of field conditions

The Play:

Gostowski back 12 yards lining up to kick, the snap is low, handled decently by Miller, Gostowski plants his foot on the turf and --WOOSH-- there goes his plant foot as he connects with the ball resulting in a low line drive that is blocked.

The aftermath:

I am pretty sure that Olindo Mare had a similar experience during the Phins game three or so weeks back.

Just to add, not trying to instigate:

I thought that you were kinda a Patriots fan so, if you are truely fishing, you caught a fellow fan, hope you believe in catch and release... if not isn't the slot limit for keepers less than 5 years of fandom, you can keep and over 30 years of fandom you can keep????

LOL I am a fan. In fact, pretty thrilled that moving to upstate NY and getting Vermont TV stations, they're the local team on TV. Switching channels I've missed the blocks. Might have been "into" the Jets game one week :bag: but I missed em'. Not fishing.Well, as you worded that happenning as it did, I'd say it's his fault. The rook needs to learn to wear better footgear, dig up a spot for his plant foot with his cleat...something. I can blow it off as rookie error but sounds to me like he's gotta "eat" that one. Whether in NE or Buffalo or even NY in december, he's gonna find ice and snow on the field. Maybe it's a good thing he got this outta the way.
