Grandma is 100 tomorrow! (1 Viewer)

My grandmother is celebrating her 100th birthday on Saturday. She was born October 11, 1914. She's always been kind and supportive to me.

We've been celebrating her birthday the last few years as you never know and you try to savor every moment you have.

Her nursing home has a room reserved for us with food. I'm just psyched!

Just curious, as I've never had a family member hit that milestone - how is she physically and mentally?

Oh, and congrats to her!!

Oh, and congrats to her!!
Physically she does OK; she's in a wheelchair most of the time but goes to therapy in the home to help keep her active. She was still cutting her grass into her early 80s.

Mentally, I can tell she's slipped. She was always fairly sharp but the last time I saw her, she was talking to me about my own relatives like I didn't know who they are. Still knew who I was though. I guess at 100 you are allowed to have a faulty memory.

My grandmother turned 90 in April, and she just stopped cutting her grass a few years ago. My Grandfather passed away in 1995, but fortunately my uncle lives across the street from her. She's in amazing health. Not on any meds, eats healthy, is active. I would honestly be surprised if she doesn't live to 100 at this pace.

Like your gma, mentally, she does the same sort of things...will write a letter to us, but write some other person's name in the greeting. Letter is clearly to and about us and our lives, but just the wrong name. Very odd, but whatever. She still remembers to write. We tried to get her an answering machine so she would know when we called, but she was freaked out that "people kept coming into her house and recording messages on that machine." She couldn't grasp that it was via the phone. I guess you take the good with the bad.

Anyway, happy birthday Gma Servo!

I've got one in my 30's!

My great grandmother made it to her late 80s and she was pretty gone mentally by the end, physically she was still pretty decent (Italian blood).

Good on your grandma, though! Just think about the things she's seen in her lifetime. She was born right after the start of World War 1.

Congrats and welcome to the club. Mine turned 100 in May and is the younger of my two living gmas! Other is 106!!!

Their minds are slipping, they ask the same question over and over. They get around ok but often need help or have to rest. But then they also remember what happened and can relay stories from before my lifetime. Its fantastic.

I am pretty happy to say my 5 year old daughter got to meet both her great grandmothers!
