—————

I thought about doing this a long time ago, but others came first.

Concept is simple. I rank the U2 songs from 200 and something to 1.

No obscure B Sides, special remixes or rerelease added tracks. If it was on the original album, it’s in. Songs on multiple albums eg on Live Under a Blood Red Sky or Rattle And Hum will be considered in both or multiple formats.

Before I start I want fo give a chance to collaborate with anyone else who likes/loves U2. PM me to talk further. Your rankings will be given equal weight to mine, except for the lowest ranked song. I have a special place in hell for that one. If you aren’t familiar with their last 2, 3, 4 albums etc, get familiar if you want to rank. Otherwise just comment on the ones you know.

If you just want to comment, no drama. If you just want to say Bono sucks or they stopped being good after War/Joshua Tree/Achtung Baby etc lets try and be positive.

I'm not equipped to assist as I haven't listened to an 'new album' of theirs since 2000 (which I enjoyed) but....I was a huge fan in HS and even into college before I drifted away.  Saw them live in 1987 when BB King opened because the Bodeans weren't available to open for a 2nd show in Fort Worth (they refused to play in Dallas because Bono climbed some scaffoldings at Reunion Arena and they gave U2 the boot and he returned fire to all of Dallas). Was maybe 20 yards from Adam Clayton that night in tickets I camped out for that read "behind the stage".  Nah, they were right there, side stage.  Best show of my whole life.  Witnessed 'When Love Comes to Town" live; that made it to Rattle & Hum.

Enough about me.  I got back into U2 the last year so count me in here in some capacity!  I have opinions.  I have songs I love and songs I don't. My top 5 wouldn't include their biggest hits. I am here for what you are about to do!

The malls are the soon to be ghost towns/so long, farewell, goodbye.

If the malls are ghost towns in our consumerist spirit, what is arena rock to our communal one?

Of all the bands in the world, you choose this one?

Oh my. Oh well, I thought Pip's Invitation was insane for his Neil Young devotion and I sit currently with Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere on my turntable, so who am I to pooh-pooh an effort like this one?

I'm just worried you'll abandon it halfway through, or unlike Neil, I'll find out that I really never liked U2 for a reason and be an enemy of the thread somehow. Because U2, try as they may, could never even unintentionally rock in the free world like Mr. Young did in the latter stages of his career. Because they never just flat-out rocked in the first place.

Pretty busy, so haven't been on these boards in some time, but I'm happy to participate in any way possible, even if it's just for commentary, kudos, personal anecdotes, fun facts re: writing/recording, or general whining about a song's ranking.

Also, while I'm in agreement of your no remix rule, I do second Anarchy's emotion that their B-sides are exceptional, especially in the 80s AND the 90s, and you should reconsider. This rule would then exclude songs like the original recordings of Party Girl and Sweetest Thing, Alex Descends Into Hell, Lady With The Spinning Head, Love Comes Tumbling, Everlasting Love, Night and Day, One Shot of Happy/Two Shots of Sad, etc. Do additional songs to Greatest Hits albums count? Anyway, I humbly request you rethink that particular aspect of the rule.

But I do look forward to this . . .

I know about 25 songs from this band total. Do I like them? Sure I like them.
So hopefully I’ll learn something.

Awesome story above this. Ive seen U2 in 3 different countries in 5 different cities. The last 3 or 4 albums are a chore to get through, but there are good moments on each. Looking forward to any commentary you have

No time limit, so i will likely see it through unless i die of old age. U2 wouldnt be in my top 10 bands, but no one is gonna tune in to me running through Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark, Royksopp, The Stranglers or Franz Ferdinand

U2s longevity at a high commercial and critical level is only rivalled and maybe even exceeds The Rolling Stones. Some people hate them, some dont get it. All good. I would love you to do the same with any band that inspires you. If U2 annoys you, all good. Walk on By.

IMO, 80’s B sides > most 2010’s album tracks.
I agree that there are some great B Sides. I think there was an album of B Sides as part of a greatest hits collection. I might be able to squeeze them in somehow. I think Everlasting Love is on about 4 B Sides lol. I might only do originals,. but include the covers on Rattle and Hum. I would be wary or romantisizing B sides though. There is a whole treasure trove of crap as well. What I might do is catalog what i am going to rank and then people can say “what about....” i havent put a set number of songs for a reason. Get the list defined first and start with the worst and work down. If i can get others here to list from 1 to eg 275, should be a bonus. Otherwise I will do solo.

Awesome. You may not like the first 100 songs I list lol. Thats why it will he worst to first.

Sometimes I write just to write and make a point while forgetting that it's a human endeavor on the other end. Don't let me either begrudge or besmirch your efforts, good time, and good name.

I'll be happy and privileged to follow along, really. That's what I meant to say.

(I'd be a whole lot happier if you counted down Franz Ferdinand, one of my favorites. But then you'd have an audience of me and NV, really, and what's the fun in us?)

Awesome.  I'm definitely in for this, although I'll need to go listen to the past 3-4 albums now.  Mrs APK announced that she will follow along and enjoy this more than the Beatles list (other than crappy songs like Rocky Raccoon  ), even though she enjoyed that list a ton.   I'm not going to pretend to be worthy of collaborating, but for anything pre-2000 ish I'll chime in a bunch.

Thanks for doing this!

This sounds like a fun project.  I will see what I can contribute - look forward to this thread either way.

I'm definitely interested in seeing the list and might be able to contribute (time permitting)......although ranking 200 is a task.
Seen them 4 times in concert & was a club member for 1 yr (to get early tix release):

  1. 1985  Unforgettable Fire             Jax, FL
  2. 1987  Joshua Tree                        Hampton, VA
  3. 2009  U2 360 tour (claw stage)  Tampa, FL     (Muse opened)
  4. 2017  30th Anniv of JT                 Tampa, FL    (One Republic opened)
I also think B-sides and movie tracks should be included.........while Re-mixes shouldn't (but if the song is already part of the list and there is an interesting re-mix, it could simply be included in the write up paragraph or linked)

And I do have almost their entire collection including the last couple of albums    (sans: Zooropa or Pop)

Love U2 and I will follow (see what I did there?) this thread and comment when I can.  I don't think I have the time or energy to help put together a list, but will gladly welcome any attempt to gush over their many good songs.   I'll be curious to see where my number 1 U2 songs lands (which is incidentally one of my 10 favorite songs ever by anyone).

Good start to a B-side list.  I actually heard a new one this past wkend called "Down All the Days" while listening to the U2 Sirius XM channel.  Had to look up the story on that as something rang familiar to it, but not quite....once you hear the song, you'll know why.

Are there even 200 songs on studio albums?  I only see about 150ish.  I'm assuming that Passengers is excluded.

I'm a huge U2 fan.  Probably seen them live 10+ times in the last 25 years, including front row (from the Red Zone).

I look forward to your list and will chime in from time to time.

The only popular song I can't stand (which I hope is the one you are referring to above) is Bullet the Blue Sky.  I don't get the fascination or love for the song.  JT album was fabulous except for BTBS.

I excluded all the Passengers songs except Miss Sarajevo which was included on the U2 best of 1990-200 and Your Blue Room which was included on the B Sides compilation for the same album.

I currently have 207 tracks including all the track listings on the B Side discs that accomodated the 1980-1989 and 1990-2000 discs. Some of those are remixes so will be excluded. I do have to check all the B Sides as some are not on these discs. Once I have tidied this up I will post them all here and then eventually begin the countdown after one last request for submissions.

#1 and #40 are obvious
Lol. I guarantee that #1 will not be that song....#40 we will see

Hey gb- good to see you! hope all has been good for you and yours.

looking forward to following along. I lost partial hearing and developed tinnitus after my last U2 show (in the oval against the stage for the Vertigo tour in Mad Square Garden)...but I won't hold it against you.

Ok.

I think I have 225 songs. Listed below. There are 9 songs that duplicate across a studio album and either Under a Blood Red Sky and Rattle and Hum. I will rate them on the better version. Eg Sunday Bloody Sunday is dead and uninspiring on War, but comes to life on Under a Blood Red Sky.

If I am missing anything or including anything I shouldnt let me know.

I have been advised of an internet list by another fbg of 218 u2 songs but it doesnt include the last album. I will use this as a reference point, but my rankings will be vastly different.

If any other fbgs want to rank the 225 or whatever we settle on, I will take that as an equal to mine

List of Songs Recorded by U2

They list 436 songs. That’s roughly double what you have. Maybe you list your Top 200 or else it might get unmanageable?

Thanks. That list has 289 songs. I would expect the 436 songs to be released to be all the versions of Lemon, Even Better than the Real thing remixes etc

Out of that 289 I will not be doing the ones where U2 is a collaborator or not the headline act. I will also not be including Deluxe edition tracks or stuff that is on the Unreleased and Rare compilation. The Passengers stuff not listed under the U2 Banner in some format.

Currently I am at about 225. Basically I think you should be able to buy anything on this list without spending hundreds of dollars for the rare stuff. The list of 218 I was directed to lists a whole bunch of the Deluxe stuff in the bottom 30 ie pointless to include them

I’m not exactly sure of the rules but I much prefer the version of Bad on the Wide Awake in America EP.

Sign me up for a “I’m here until you list my absolute favorite (and it isn’t close) song and then I’m gonna rant and stomp my feet and quit, but secretly keep reading” slot.

Pretty sure that’s a required role in the songs thread handbook.

The only "must have" song IMO that is not on your list is "A Celebration," which for me is likely in my Top 20 U2 songs. That was a single only release with Party Girl as the B Side. They played it intermittently on the War tour but dropped it after that as Edge said it was too hard to play and Bono mentioned back in the day that people misinterpreted the lyrics. But it made it onto The Complete U2 collection.

Yep. A rare (for 1982) non-album A-side. It's also the song I linked when rock said the band doesn't rock.

People were remarkably well-behaved during my Neil Young countdown -- even my controversial placement of Sugar Mountain drew criticism but not vitriol.

I have that on vinyl!

Problem with this approach is that there are multiple versions of lots of tracks across multiple formats. I agree the studio version on UF pales in comparison to others elsewhere....like Sunday Bloody Sunday. Songs that transcend the studio album, there are quite a few with this band, will be judged more fairly than just the studio version.

Yeah I missed that one. Its in now. It wont be top 20 for me, but it wont be bottom half im pretty confident.

i also removed Star Spangled Banner from Rattle and Hum. Its hardly U2. A couple of others I think too.

Btw, „A man and a woman“ needs to go last.
Not even close. I will group them roughly in the following categories

Irritating and/Or Awful songs at the bottom

Boring songs next

Interesting,  but something missing

Enjoyable, but not their best

Great songs

Their best

Should I include the following tracks? Several appear higher, highest was 84 I think, in the chart i was told about by another Fbg. There are 27 below i think. Most are reasonably attainable on the deluxe editions. I will provide my updated list soon before commencing.

No rules really. I finalise the list of songs and rank them from worst to first. Generally they will only be ranked on the studio version, but exceptions will be made like for Bad. If someone tells me eg Discoteque sounds much better in concert when I saw them in Dortmund in 1993, well thats just enjoyable commentary. If they say eg the live version of Out of Control on the b side to Lemon is much better than on Boy. I may reconsider.

I vote no
Thanks. I probably will exclude them unless others want to chime in.

Found another track missing

Crystal Ballroom which is on the vinyl only version of Songs of Innocence. Its rated as the best track on the album lol. Have to include it.

The list of 218 I am referencing, apart from not including Songs of Experience, also doesn’t include their covers, some b sides, new singles off U218 and some soundtrack stuff. I think its important to include these because a)they are on official releases and b) i dont get why you would exclude them.

"Everlasting Love" (Buzz Cason, Mac Gayden)"All I Want Is You" single

"Unchained Melody" (Alex North, Hy Zaret)"All I Want Is You" single

"Happiness Is a Warm Gun" (Gun mix)"Last Night on Earth" single

"Dancing Barefoot" (extended version; Patti Smith, Ivan Kral)"When Love Comes to Town" single

"Dont take your guns to townElevation

"I remember youElevation

"No Line on the Horizon 2Get on Your Boots

"I"m not your babyPlease

"All Along the Watchtower" Rattle and Hum

"Freedom for My People"Rattle and Hum

I mean, they recorded an official version of Bang A Gong (Get It On) last year. I didn’t say it was good. I only bring it up because I believe it’s the last thing they released.

I'd classify this as "not really U2" like Star Spangled Banner from that album.

Did you include their cover of Woody Guthrie's "Jesus Christ" from the Folkways tribute album? IMO if Christmas (Baby Please Come Home) is included, that should be too.

Haha. I need a physical copy. Actually I don’t want one, but just drawing the line at a digital release.

Ok. Will remove that one. The Rattle and Hum album is a bugger for doing this properly. New stuff, covers, other artist interludes and live stuff.

Jesus Christ didn’t come up anywhere I looked. Could have skipped over it. I remember it though, so if I am including covers as per a few posts ago will include this one. As long as I can get a physical copy.
