So no more Simmons podcast content coming I reckon.
ESPN is going to keep "The B.S. Report" name and is considering keeping it going with a new host or rotating hosts.
If they're trying to twist the knife, after they blindsided him and cost him millions by killing his leverage, this would be a good way to do it.
It's the network's brand, their IP. NBC claimed ownership of Larry Bud Melman and a masturbating bear. This is nothing by comparison.

I think it would look petty and silly. People don't listen to the BS Report because of the brand name or anything - it's Bill Simmons saying Bill Simmonsy things with Bill Simmonsy guests and friends. Are they going to just roll out a random ESPN suit to talk about about 90210 or Vin Diesel's legacy? Makes no sense.

I recognize all the criticisms and acknowledge them as valid, but I still looked forward to all his columns. Maybe I'm an idiot who should go watch Fast and the Furious and listen to Nickelback, but I'm still a fan.
Yep. I'm too ignorant and indifferent to let Simmons' lack of technical skill and/or carelessness bother me. I like his stuff, so I read it/listen to it.

I haven't had the time to listen to any podcasts lately, but I did see "Bill Don't Lie" pop up, and wondered if maybe that was in preparation for a fallout with ESPN.

ESPN own "Bill Don't Lie", too?

I haven't been able to get through virtually any of his non NFL picks columns in years, but listened to all of his podcasts. Just always found them very entertaining even if I found myself calling him an idiot for his completely illogical views on things. Extra entertainment came when one of the only two guys who would call him out on his bull#### - Klosterman or House - were on. Klosterman would try to be nice about it and do it in a subtle way; House would basically call him an idiot.

I go back to reading him when he was the Boston Sports Guy. But like you I've lost interest in most of his writing except for the NFL columns and mailbags. Having less than zero interest in the NBA certainly contributes to not reading him as much, but I do enjoy his podcasts still.

Amazing that he didn't secure the naming rights to the BS report or even grantland. I obviously have no idea how it works, but wouldn't he have secured some "ownership" rights in certain things like Grantland, BS Report and the 30 for 30s? Surprised that ESPN could just keep the BS Report going without the originator involved. (Terrible idea btw)

The B.S. Report was what got me into the podcast format. The casual long form is a great fit for Simmons. I can see how he thought his success as a podcaster would translate to TV talking head (and that's still where the serious money is) but the TV cameras just wash him out and make him look like an amateur.

I'm not sure how much he thought of it at the time, but he could have gotten investors and done all the hard Grantland work on his own but instead he chose or allowed ESPN/Disney to front all that money and risk and do it under their umbrella. I believe them allowing him to start of a site and invest in it was a key piece of him sticking around with ESPN during his last contract negotiation. I don't believe there's any way to "own" a piece of a site like that, beyond being contracted to get bonuses based on site metrics or revenues. Maybe he could have been given Disney stock but guessing that's it.

Compare it to what Nate Silver did. He started 538 on his own, licensed it to the NY Times, and then sold the brand to ESPN.

He's also a very odd looking guy. Where the hell is his chin?

Espn will definitely keep the BS Report name and also Grantland.

The same thing happen to The Basketball Jones when they went over to NBA. They had came up with the name, but the network they were on had ownership of it.

It's Simmons and the guests. I guess he'll lose the ESPN NBA guys (Windhorst, Lowe...until he moves over with Simmons, Ford...no big loss there, etc.), but frankly there are enough other interesting non-ESPN NBA guys out there like Haralabos that it won't be hard for him to find new talent.

That's really his biggest strength these days. Finding new talent and letting them find their footing and then do their jobs. Just compare Grantland to 538 and you can see how hard it is. Grantland/BS Report are unique properties because of Simmons ability to find/attract talent and ESPNs money/distribution. He can get the money/distribution elsewhere these days.

There's a ton of money to be made in streamers and podcasts. People steal music and TV but pay for streaming. It's odd.

I mean just go to the porn cam sites. Every second you have people throwing money at the girls. they could watch for free but they don't.

It's a huge market. Maybe not what ESPN paid him but it still could be huge.

I enjoy both Carolla and Simmons podcasts. I feel like Carolla is consistently funny on his own and guests don't add much to the show. Simmons really relies on good guests and I think he creates a good dialogue which makes the show entertaining. It would be tougher for BS to pull off a daily format show because of this, or at least at the same quality of what we've been used to.

I don't follow the math on Carolla podcast being worth $4MM per year. If you add up all of the podcasts, stand up revenues, books, Loveline and Mangria... maybe. Just going on the brands that he pimps on a daily basis, I'd be surprised if they were 4MM.

I don't think I ever made it through a full Simmons podcast. They seem interminable to me and the target demographic has even shorter attention spans than I do. When do people have time to listen to a couple of guys talk for 45 minutes?

Podcasting is a multi-taksing medium. You listen while you're doing something else.

45 minutes is exactly how long it takes for me to walk out of my apartment, get on a bus through the Lincoln Tunnel, and walk from Port Authority across town to my office and up to my desk. Also how long I usually spend doing cardio at the gym.

He's stated many times that he would never be able to talk into a mic on his own for an extended period of time - thinks it's one of the hardest jobs out there. That podcast he did a few weeks back where he discussed his career path was by far the longest solo time he's ever done.

I listen while I'm zoning out at work. Does that count?

IIRC the $4.4MM was the revenues for all of Carolla Digital: all of Adam's shows, Dr. Drew's, Adam's wife, Penn Jillette. I could see the ad revenue and affiliate marketing on those hitting $4.4MM. A well-organized Amazon Affiliate can clear six figures with an audience under 100,000, and Carolla Digital's audience has to be at least a couple million.

Thanks for the responses. I guess I'll tune in after I'm done listening to every piece of music ever recorded.

That and Shakespeare and political philosophy. I get what you're saying.

That seems more reasonable to me.

The big question is cousin sal

He's an abc employee

Both owned by Disney

Hmmmm, will the cuz be blocked?
I thought about that earlier. My guess is he'll still be on whatever podcasts he has, and he'll be plugging Kimmel but not his ESPN pick appearances (if those even keep up without the BS Report lead-in. He's had people from other networks/sites on plenty and as far as I know, ESPN only restricts their talent from appearing on WFAN radio.

c'mon - it's like AM radio, but better! oh wait.

at the office I like to listen to music and when I'm driving or walking, I prefer podcasts.

I like music, too, so it's not an either-or choice for me.

Did Simmons have it right that all you sports dorks in your forties are also watching reality tv?
I don't watch any of the shows where they follow a family around with cameras or any of the dating shows. However, I share Grantland's passion for Real World/Road Rules Challenge. I follow that sport more closely than I follow NHL or NFL, and know more about the Challenge competitors than I know about most of my wife's relatives.
