Simmons on TV is a mistake. He's just not a natural in front of the camera.
Yeah...I can't seem him being asked back after this season. Magic Johnson and Wilbon look confused and frightened whenever he speaks. Funny thing is, he knows more about today's NBA than both of them combined. He just isn't made for TV.Simmons on TV is a mistake. He's just not a natural in front of the camera.
I hope it'll work because I just like Simmons, but I doubt he stays either.Yeah...I can't seem him being asked back after this season. me too. im stunned by 3mil. i guess its cuz of the 30 for 30?I would have guessed his ESPN haul would've been closer to 750k to 1mil. Good for him.
I actually figured he was making more. I don't think many of you realize how many people he reaches.
I doubt there's another ESPN personality that is anywhere close in terms of drawing an audience.I actually figured he was making more. I don't think many of you realize how many people he reaches.
He's worth a lot more than that to ESPN because of how effectively he reaches ESPN's target demographic.Thats ridiculous. I can't stand Reilly.'Ferris Bueller Fan said:For comparison... when Rick Reilly left SI to join ESPN, he signed a 5-year, $17MM deal.
I would like to know what Reilly's "target" audience is. He is horrid and so unbelievably full of himself it is nauseating.Thats ridiculous. I can't stand Reilly.'Ferris Bueller Fan said:For comparison... when Rick Reilly left SI to join ESPN, he signed a 5-year, $17MM deal.
Yeah, the issue with that show is not Simmons, it's Wilbon as host and then Magic is awful on TV. Always has been. Simmons is a great shake up for TV. A bit awkward in his delivery, but always insightful and often hilarious.'pollardsvision said:I hope it'll work because I just like Simmons, but I doubt he stays either.'Dought Man said:Yeah...I can't seem him being asked back after this season. I think that's really the potential issue. Used to the columns and podcasts where he can over-analyze things to death and schtick it up from time to time, a 30-60 min. pre-game show is just not his style.Seems these shows have such a structured and mostly positive format, Simmons' wanting bounce around unfounded trade ideas seems out of place (even if entertaining for many, including myself).Yeah, the issue with that show is not Simmons, it's Wilbon as host and then Magic is awful on TV. The dads of people who read Bill Simmons.I would like to know what Reilly's "target" audience is. He is horrid and so unbelievably full of himself it is nauseating.Thats ridiculous. Same thing here on Firefox.Anyone having trouble accessing the Grantland site? It looks like they added an ad screen prior to getting to the front page, but it just keeps refreshing.
Did they write an article letting you know LeBron doesn't play for Cleveland anymore?Just want to say, Zach Lowe and the NBA coverage has been fantastic this year. Love Grantland.
Speaking of which, here is an interesting follow-up with Joe Dudek, the small college RB that Rick Reilly voted ahead of Bo Jackson for the 1985 Heisman Trophy.Thats ridiculous. I can't stand Reilly. For comparison... when Rick Reilly left SI to join ESPN, he signed a 5-year, $17MM deal.
He's awesome.Their baseball guys are great too. Pierce is great. The TV stuff is pretty solid. Titus stinks and some of the pop culture stuff is a waste, but I can avoid that stuff easily enough.Just want to say, Zach Lowe and the NBA coverage has been fantastic this year. Love Grantland.
I'm pretty sure than most of the non-Lakers/Knicks fans in the NBA thread know more about basketball than 10-15 GMs in the NBA. Not really much of an accomplishment. With guys like Bryan Colangelo, David Kahn and Billy King its hard to argue that it takes much basketball knowledge to become a GM. There are some guys that really know what they are doing (Presti, Buford, Kupchak, Ujiri and some others) but I think that the NBA is littered with teams that have terrible management. That said, Simmons does know as much about basketball as just about any writer out there.'shader said:At some point I predict Simmons will get an executive job in the NBA. Simmons will get a job one day for a couple reasons:1. He's talked about it for years. You can tell he really wants it.2. His fan base is the 20-45 market. That market adores him.3. That market is also (for the most part) too young to own teams. There are a few young owners, but not many. When a basketball lover that grew up on Simmons strikes it rich and buys himself an NBA team, he's going to hire Simmons. It's that simple.I've never read a writer that I thought could run a team. Peter King running an NFL franchise? Come on.But Simmons seems to understand the game as much as anyone. I dislike most espn "roundtable" shows but the NBA one he does with Jalen Rose & Mike Wilbon is pretty good.Simmons will get a job one day for a couple reasons:1. He's talked about it for years. If anybody thought McHale handed the Celtics a good team in the Garnett deal, wait until Simmons gets a hold of a franchise. I think he is too emotional to ever run a franchise. This is the same guy that had Jeremy Lin as the 34th most untradable player in the NBA (ahead of guys like Curry, Tyson Chandler, Ty Lawson) and Paul George 29th ahead of Harden and the others I mentioned. He buys way to into hype and I think he would constantly be making poor emotional choices.Simmons will get a job one day for a couple reasons:1. He's talked about it for years. He's smart and a good analyst, but he thinks too much about how things would be perceived and he can't be objective about any player that has played for Celtics or Lakers or any of their rivals. Also, he's pretty awful at evaluating prospects in his NBA draft previews as I recall. If anybody thought McHale handed the Celtics a good team in the Garnett deal, wait until Simmons gets a hold of a franchise. Hey!David Kahn
I seem to recall him trashing Ricky Rubio. Also, he's pretty awful at evaluating prospects in his NBA draft previews as I recall.
His turn on the BS report was really good. If I'm remembering correctly. He had shuttle service at some airport in Canada. Making decent scratch. Was making good dough with his betting system on NBA games. Decided to let it all ride on I think the first Laker title-run with Phil Jackson. Made a killing and then had the capital to live the life.Definetly one to listen too.Zach Lowe would be better suited to running a team. So would Hollinger, who actually did just get hired by the Grizzlies.Someone asked Harabalos if he'd ever want to be a GM, and he said he wouldn't want to take the pay cut. Awesome.
Simmons wrote a great article about Tyson, and how he really wasn't that great of a boxer considering all factors involved at the time. Ill try and find it.eta: My linkProbably the most intriguing interview I've ever heard with Mike Tyson.
I'm way on the opposite side. Enjoy everything about it. Intelligent, clever, thoughtful writing, particularly Barnwell's stuff.Suggest you just move on and find what is appealing to you.I still don't get Grantland. I haven't liked any of the other writers and while I did like Klosterman, it appears he's fizzled out of being a regular contributor. I can't gut my way through any Barnwell articles. I don't like Simmons' podcasts and his writing has really plateaued. It's a mailbag, a picks column and NBA stuff (which I'm not a fan of).His high point included his Vegas trips, Super Bowl weeks, running diaries and the like. I scan Grantland a few times a week and rarely finish any article.![]()
I'll second this. He can even write about golf and make it entertaining.Norm MacDonald's writing is really good
Why is Carolla interviewing Tyson on the BS Report instead of on his own podcast?Probably the most intriguing interview I've ever heard with Mike Tyson.Adam Carolla helms the BS Report with an hour+ interview with Iron Mike. Fascinating. My linkA must listen.![]()
