I think Holly Anderson is really talented. Hopefully she'll land somewhere stable.
She was at SB nation. Not a fan.

She has me blocked on Twitter and I don't follow her and have never seen or responded to a tweet of hers. Only thing I can imagine is that she crop dusted everybody with fsu in their Twitter name. :lmao:

I've only read her stuff at Grantland. I find it interesting and amusing, though my old ### probably misses half of her pop culture references.

Seems like just a matter of time until this thing goes underwater.

Glad that Rembert landed on his feet with NY Mag though.
If ESPN didn't feel like they needed to prove Grantland could work without Simmons, they would have shut it down with Simmons's departure, citing high costs and low revenues.
But ESPN is not going to get an unlimited amount of rope from The Mouse, especially given how (it appears) that they're botching things up. I don't doubt that there's a timeline where a post-Simmons Grantland works...it just doesn't seem like it's this one.

If Grantland post-Simmons lasts longer than Page2 post-Simmons, it will have accomplished a lot.

As long as they have Lowe and Keri, I'll keep checking in. For some reason I like Serrano too, although I think that means I might be slightly ######ed.

The NFL podcast had some weird stuff as well. Barnwell started off with something like, "As I was saying, we lost some editors..." Later, he said something like, "You people are the only reason we're doing this podcast."

If I had to guess, I would say that they made a podcast, praised people who were leaving Grantland, and it got cut from the podcast. They (sounds like mostly Barnwell) responded by dumping the podcast and not recording any more until they were allowed to add the praise back in.

Just a guess, though.

It sucks temporarily, but people like Zach Lowe, Jonah Keri, Holly Anderson, Katie Baker and Brian Phillips will get snatched up almost immediately, right? And since we have Twitter we don't need a single site to aggregate them, we can just follow them and assume they'll link any content they generate. And we won't have to give ESPN pageviews to do it!

Just trying to put a positive spin on it.

If the site was making gobs of money, I would imagine they would have kept it. I still like Bill Simmons, but the world wasn't clamoring for long form sports journalism it turns out.

Simmons is one to point out that if you write something really well, the internet will help the rest of the world find it. Then out of the other side of his mouth, he blames ESPN for not giving the site enough promotion on the home page. Little hypocritical IMO.

That's going to take more than a little time.

Lowe had a podcast lined up for this afternoon that he had to cancel. Sounds like they didn't tell anyone before now.

This comparison doesn't make sense to me. Writers can write and write and write until they make it. Sites have significant and immediate costs. They have to pay salaries and expenses immediately, even before they generate any content. They can't just keep writing until their stuff spreads through word of mouth. There's nothing hypocritical about the complaint. Whether it was a valid complaint or not I don't know, but no hypocrisy IMO.

It may not get a lot of clicks, but the people who enjoy it, really enjoy it. I'm a little bit surprised they didn't try out a subscription model. It was basically a better SI. I at least would have paid a few bucks a month for it.

Sorry it wasn't clearer - Simmons on his podcasts says that good writing doesn't need promotion in this day and age. If the writing is good, then people will find it and it will happen through word of mouth/social media. (This is not my position, this is his.)

Wonder if guys like Lowe and Keri get moved over to ESPN proper
Seems like Lowe could make ESPN a ton of money as a insider author, and I think Lowe enjoys having ESPN's access. But given that they just apparently blindsided him with this news it's tough to see that working out now.

Miller tweeted that the sports writers are going to be used on ESPN "proper." All contracts will be honored.
But will those guys become Insider content? Stuff with even half the equivalent depth is pretty exclusively subscriber-only on the Mothership.

This isn't worth getting into, but Grantland would have been profitable (its was breakeven) if ESPN's honchos had sold the product better to advertisers. They left 5 million (Simmons has said that's what his podcast will generate in revenue this year) on the table with just his podcasts.

I won't be too surprised if Lowe, Barnwell, Mays, Keri, maybe a couple of other guys end up working for Simmons doing pods, producing content for his TV show, and maybe writing. Simmons already has 4 editors, so he seems to be itching to do something.

Sure. Like for example doesn't matter where Zach Lowe goes next, his work is outstanding and he'll be successful and have a huge audience. But again, that's not the same thing as a content provider succeeding, because time is short and you need to turn a profit, so you need promotion. If something's free or close to free you can keep doing it until word spreads and you get an audience. Writing in your spare time is free or close to free. Maintaining Grantland was not, so it need promotion b/c it doesn't have time to wait for people to find it.

People still use insider? I mean for NBA, it's basically Ford, Amin, and Pelton and it's not like that content isn't available for free other places.

####!!! Right as basketball season starts and Zach Lowe/Kirk Goldsberry become invaluable.

Better be a way to read those guys still right away!

I'd consider paying for it if Lowe was on there.

I don't buy that $5 million number. I know it's based off that one article that claims Corolla's show does something like $6 million but a) he has a show everyday b) he sells his own products on it and c) he uses it to pimp his standup appearances, so parts of b) and c) could be included in that figure if it's even accurate.

He's doing the same ####ty stamps.com type reads he did on his old podcast, he just adds a couple more to each now.

I'd be shocked if Lowe was still employed by ESPN at the end of the NBA season. Lowe following Simmons makes too much sense.

Agree Lowe will leave based on his tweets if nothing else. I wonder what Simmons's plan is (is he building another site?).
