Not ridiculous, but correct. Jake Plummer will not lead this Bronco team to the SuperBowl, he simply isn't good enough, and too mistake prone. The context was that Irvin was ragging on Plummer saying that after witnessing tonight's game Denver had no chance of getting to the Superbowl.Ridiculous statement since Plummer basically won this game for Denver against perhaps the best D in the game. I'm glad Young set him right.
Maybe, maybe not, but to say that the Broncos are not one of the top 5 teams in the AFC right now, which was Irvin's contention, is idiotic. No, he was just a crack baby.Irvins on crack
Both =)Honestly, ESPN football commentary and analysis is really slipping. Just feels less technical, more comical - a lot more like Fox's pregame :sigh:Just as amusing was that other Espn tool, Stuart Scott's reply to defend Irvin, "The man did win 3 Superbowl rings"Not sure who I dislike listening to more...Irvin or Scott.
How many QB's are good enough? Trent Dilfer, Phil Simms, Rich Gannon, Brad Johnson, Kerry Collins, Chris Chandler, Mark Rypien, Etc.Not ridiculous, but correct. too many people missing the point here. allow me to break it down, 1 2 3 style1.Irvin is a moron2. He keeps getting called out by intelligent, classy, well educated guys (Young, TJ)3. ESPN continues to slip down that slope of appealing to moronic thugs who apparently make up most of their viewer base
Id love to see Irvin try a comeback on Young. It wouldnt even be a battle of wits. It would be a battle of wits vs half-wit.too many people missing the point here. allow me to break it down, 1 2 3 style2. He keeps getting called out by intelligent, classy, well educated guys (Young, TJ)
He actually did attempt a comeback........the infantile..."We'll See"Id love to see Irvin try a comeback on Young. It wouldnt even be a battle of wits. Oh...my badI wouldn't be suprised if he's tokin it in the ESPN dressing room. He can't sit still, and he's always grabbing on the other analysts and often times making them look like they feel awkward. I would also want to point out that Merrill Hoge and Saulisbury are also idiots. They should go with Berman, Jackson, Young, and Jaworski, and Jaws is borderline. Th best NFL analysis is on NFL network. Rich Eisen is the man, and they always bring in HOF talent to analyze like Faulk, TD, Emmitt, Lorenzo Neal, Sterling Sharpe, and Adam Scheffler knows his ####. Also, their college/draft coverage is/was excellent with Mayock and Chavous as well as others.Texican said:It was his brother's. He was just holding it for him.KoolKat said:Irvins on crack
This is so true. I think the real turning point was PTI. These damn "debate" shows have turned quality programming into crap. I guess this stuff creates ratings. It's leaked onto other shows aswell. Salisbury and Clayton pretending to smacktalk on Sportscenter. Stephen A. Smith yelling at the television audience. ESPN has ruined NFL and NBA coverage.3. ESPN continues to slip down that slope of appealing to moronic thugs who apparently make up most of their viewer base
Agree for the most part, except for Collinsworth. He is an a hole, but he is not afraid to call players or coaches out on obvious BS, which is more than I can say for everyone else in the TV industry...My top football TV figureheads..
Troy Aikman
Steve Young
Howie Long
Tom Jackson
Ron Jaworski
People I turn the channel off for...

Well, before the Philly/Dallas game last night, he had Dallas as the best team in the league, at which point, Ditka called him out for being an idiot. What I thought was funny was that Irvin had the Ravens as the best team in the LEAGUE prior to the game....then he drops them to #5 on the AFC list afterwards? Quite a flip-flop there, cokey head. Now I wonder if he'll give the Bears the props they deserve.
does espn even have the monday morning qb show anymore? ditka and ea were the best! mora is horrible on the nfl network and the host of the 'point after show' talks slow and still manages to stumble over his words.2112 said:I thoroughly enjoyed last season's duo of Eric Allen & Mike Ditka on ESPNews; the combo of those two really added "reasonable" insight into the games for me. Now they moved Ditka out "front" to be with the Irvin sideshow, and paired Qadry Ismael with EA. Not as solid as last year, but still better than the other combos ESPN seems to put together.
When Ditka calls you out for being an idiot, youve got nowhere to go but up.Well, before the Philly/Dallas game last night, he had Dallas as the best team in the league, at which point, Ditka called him out for being an idiot. What I thought was funny was that Irvin had the Ravens as the best team in the LEAGUE prior to the game....then he drops them to #5 on the AFC list afterwards? Oh c'monI hate irvin but I did not have a problem with him ranking denver outside of the top five. Just because Denver just got by Baltimore at home does not mean you have to rank Denver ahead of Baltimore. Plummer DID look horrible last night and Irvin's point was he is not going to rank a team in the top five with a bad qb. Maybe not the best position but it's an opinion with some support. Ranking teams early in the season in based on opinion. I think young should save his bashing for when Irvin makes a true logical mistake which he always does.l
It's been said before, but this is veryWadsworth said:While I do enjoy Irvin bashing as much as the next guy and believe me I do, the real point to me is not just why does Irvin have a job. It's why do 75% of these guys have a job? I could care less who Shannon Sharpe thinks are the top 5 teams in the NFC. I don't need Deion Sanders telling me who had the best TD celebration dance. It's not just Irvin, all of these cult of personality so called NFL experts are a huge waste of time. The pregame shows, post game shows, highlight shows, draft shows are filled with these players that have opinions that are less educated than maybe 100 people that post in this forum for example. Do you really care who Jerome Bettis thinks is a good fantasy WR? Or what Mike Vrabel thinks about the Seahawks second round draft pick? Corey Chavous should have a gig at draft time, but what other player has even a half-educated opinion? Give me a fantasy geek, a former scout, a professional gambler, a former coach even, just please stop force-feeding me these loud mouthed ex-jocks that do little outside of supporting their player/friends and "keep it real".
Funny you mention James Brown as I had him in mind when talking about the host. I'm not a fan of his as he's just too damn happy for my tastes. However he does a good job of introducing the topic and letting the "analysts" debate it. And I agree, he does a solid job.Good choices all around here. However the host's job looks easy but it's amazing how few people really do it well. From what I've seen this year: the downgrade at fox, the snoozefest that is Football Night in America, and the Stu Scott train wreck, James Brown's talent is hugely underappreciated.I'm a substance guy, not a fan of fluff and flash so I'd rather watch guys who actually give content.
Tom Jackson, Ron Jaworski, a former Head Coach, provided it's not Jerry Glanville and maybe a guy like Ronnie Lott or Howie Long. This would give me guys who could speak coherently about the games, wouldn't shout over each other, and also are a nice blend of positions. They could all offer a perspective the other guy couldn't. Might not be a bad idea to add a former O-Lineman too, maybe Mark Schlereth. The studio host is the easiest job to fill. All he has to do is introduce a topic and then keep his mouth shut. Shouldn't be too tough to find that guy. Heck I could do it!
Is it me or does Stu Scott's eye look worse every time I see it. That thing was giving me the heebie jeebies last night. He had a real Edgar Allen Poe mystique about it.
Those guys are like music to my ears compared to Stephen A. Smith on ESPN radio. Talk about nails on a blackboard. ESPN should clean house and get back to their roots. The Boomerisms and Hollywood shlock is a real buzz killer on Sundays. Bring back Musberger, Irv Cross, and that hot chick that actually knew something about football (although she's probably in her 60's now.)rupricht said:Just as amusing was that other Espn tool, Stuart Scott's reply to defend Irvin, "The man did win 3 Superbowl rings"Not sure who I dislike listening to more...Irvin or Scott.

That sure as heck wasn't true last year - and Eisen DOES go after Mike Mayauck (the VP of officiating, who he has in every week)The NFL-N has gotten a LOT softer since they started to make their "same carry as ESPN" demand to T-W.I like Rich Eisen but the NFL Network's biggest sin is a total lack of sack when it comes to interviews. They don't touch the controversial stuff. Eisen sitting around and yapping with current players isn't a bad thing but it shouldn't be misconstrued as in depth coverage. I feel like Rich will discuss a players car stereo before he'll tackle an issue. That's a shame because the NFL Network at least has the potential to offer excellent information.
You mean 1971 Miss America Phyllis George? She looked o.k. but I didn't find her football accumen exactly breathtaking. Those guys are like music to my ears compared to Stephen A. Smith on ESPN radio. Hi hound,I don't have any special insights there but I'm pretty sure that's the network and not so much Eisen. There are lots of people very leery about a "state run media" in the NFL network. As they get stronger, I think you'll see a sharpening distinction between them and ESPN. It's Tiki Barber reads to school kids vs Mike Irvin talks about his drug use as a player type stuff.Very interesting time for the sport.JI like Rich Eisen but the NFL Network's biggest sin is a total lack of sack when it comes to interviews. Hate on him if you must, he is excellent on NFL Matchup.Plus, he has forgotten more about football than you will ever know.- Merrill Hodge
Shannon needs a speech therapist, seriously.Boomer Esiason is great on radio, and belongs back on TV.Here's an up-and-comer who is going to be great on TV... Marshall Faulk. Needs justs a litte more polish, but he's still the inner-city New Orleans kid who can eloquently and succinctly speak to and about the game of football, be fun, knows when (and more importantly) how much 'side conversation' to embark on, doesn't have to reach for a reaction as he has a concise and usually accurate take on many facets, always has a smile, and is constructive in his critique ...not a blathering rip sesson on someone a la Irvin or McGuire. Faulk will appeal to many audiences, ... look forward to his success as a broadcaster. Great lineup, but you mentioned something about that SD v. OAK MNF to open the season. I thought that was the best commentary from any broadcast team i'd ever seen. I'd rather see that crew than any other. If I had my choice, this is who I would want analyzing games for a pre-game show on my network, if I had a network.
1. A former coach - I have no problem with Mike Ditka, he tells you like it is, but I'd like to get **** Vermeil on the team. He really impressed me with his color analyst work in that SD/OAK monday night game early in the season.
He is good on radio with Marv - but he seems to go all whiney when he gets on T.V. If he could tone it down a bit and be more like he is on the radio broadcasts he'd be a pretty good commentator.Boomer Esiason is great on radio, and belongs back on TV.
I agree with this....that SD v. OAK MNF to open the season. I thought that was the best commentary from any broadcast team i'd ever seen. I'd rather see that crew than any other.
anyone else notice Mort is turning in some clown around antics, and looks so unatural as he attempts to fit in with the other buffoons??I agree with this....that SD v. OAK MNF to open the season. I thought that was the best commentary from any broadcast team i'd ever seen. I'd rather see that crew than any other.
STL homer here. When the guy is on national TV, he tries to hide the fact so much, that he bashed STL teams. Baseball included. side note Tim McCarver stinks too!!!!Oh c'monI hate irvin but I did not have a problem with him ranking denver outside of the top five. Plummer made 1 blatant mistake last night. The weather was horrible and the Balt D was suffocating. He looked great in the second half and as I have stated twice already in this thread he basically won the game for Denver....2 great 3rd down plays and the sealing TD throw. He did not hang on to the ball, fast release, and was pretty accurate.....I counted at least 3 dropped easy passes which would have made him look even better.Irvin's assertion based on Monday night's game was nonsense. Young's insulting comment was a direct rebuke to Irvin's lack of football sense...Young obviously was a little ticked that someone who played football his whole life could not recognize a solid QB performance given all the factors. This is what people seem to be missing. The overall Jake Plummer debate is a separate issue.
What was also equally irritating was when Theisman kept saying how the weather did not affect the passing/receiving ability of the QB/WR. In fact he claimed it was easier for the QB because the ball was tackier! Even Kornheiser kept questioning this fuzzy logic and kept suggesting to Theisman that the weather was indeed a factor. Of course, the sensible Steve Young confirmed that it was in fact more difficult for QB's and WR's to play in this weather...cold windy & wet. Tom Jackson said it was a defensive players dream!
My "Can Listen to" list:
Young - sound analysis
Ditka - Love Ditka...keeps surprising me with funny remarks and sayings.
Tom Jackson
Salisbury -massive Ego but knows his stuff
Clayton- love the inside info and his jousting with Salisbury
Glazer - great inside info too
Schlereth - sound analysis
Golic - also solid
Howie Long - no problems
Jaworski - Even with his massive Eagles bias he is good.
Boomer - Entertaining
Hodge - ok
Trey Wingo - does a good job handling all the big egos
Bradshaw & Jimmie Johnson - marginal and at times entertaining
My "can't stand" list:
Stu Scott
Mike Irvin
Shannon Sharpe
Joe Buck![]()
Theisman
That host on the Espn fantasy football show
Seehorn
Wouldn't it be hard to look at when Vermeil starts crying when Ditka starts talking about the good ol' days?1. A former coach - I have no problem with Mike Ditka, he tells you like it is, but I'd like to get **** Vermeil on the team. He really impressed me with his color analyst work in that SD/OAK monday night game early in the season.
Is that even possible?laxiepoo said:Honestly, ESPN football commentary and analysis is really slipping.
what I said above.Expectations from ESPN for anything other than goofiness is pretty goofy itself. Irvin is actually a perfect fit. In fact it should be him, both of the Sharpes, and Scott, all the time.Just feels less technical, more comical
Good call on Faulk. He's been a joy to watch thus far. Oh, I don't know, I think Irvin's yelling and screaming and not making sense 99% of the time might have more to do with it. It appears you are trying to play the race card without actually doing it. Let me tell you it doesn't fly. It's a weird phenomena to me...I think Michael Irvin has great insight on the game and I respect his commentary and braggadoccio mentality.
