I'd vote for one of these guys:

Deacon Jones

Joe Montana

John Hannah

Jerry Rice

Reggie White

Lawrence Taylor

Jim Brown

All of the above players, at some point, dominated football for a significant amount of time. IMO, they were, for a while, men among boys. And there's probably a name or two I can't think of.

One observation about Payton/Brown:

It's a bit difficult to take this argument seriously, because one side is using facts and stats, and the other side is using opinion, and assumption.

It's sort of a pointless exercise, although interesting, because I think everyone would have different criteria. Think about it: Greatest of All Time! Way too vague.

I'm a defensive guy myself. I've been a real NFL fan since about '85, so I'll throw out my top few in the last 20 years.

#1. Ronnie Lott - Hit Man is my all-time favorite

#2. LT - Very arguably the most dominant defensive player evah.

#3. Singletary - The best LB I've ever watched.

#4. Derrick Thomas R.I.P. - 7 sacks IN ONE GAME!

#5. Ray Lewis - Singletary of the recent era.

Code:
Johnny Unitas [ 7 ] ** [2.53%]Brett Favre (LOL) [ 8 ] ** [2.89%]
The fact that Bert Favruh has more votes than Johnny U means there's either a lot of smartasses or a lot of idiots (likely both) around here.

The greatest baseball player of all time is Babe Ruth because he could contribute in all phases of the game.

Likewise, the greatest football player of all time should be able to contribute in all phases of the same. Thus, these two names should be at the top of the list:

Sammy Baugh - led the league in passing, interceptions, and punting in the same season. A feared weapon throwing, running, kicking, tackling, or in pass coverage, he's probably the best all-around player who's ever played the game.

Don Hutson - not only arguably the #2 WR of all time, he also intercepted 30 passes as a defensive back in his career and scored 193 points by kicking the ball.

Now, if you want to talk about who the best player at his position was, it's Jerry Rice at WR and everyone else is fighting for second.
:goodposting: regarding the multi-dimensional threat. Give me someone who can do more than just run or pass or catch. Add kicking and some D, then you have the best of all time.Of course, those types of players are long gone.

I think Don Hutson should be in the discussion. His numbers aren't anywhere near as pretty as Rice's, but he played offense and defense and he revolutionized the WR position. He set several records that stood for decades after he retired.

I think Jim Brown, Jerry Rice and Lawrence Taylor have strong arguments as well.
