Green Bay talking to Barlow (1 Viewer)

The Green Bay Packers might find their running back of the future in next month’s NFL draft, but it doesn’t appear the team has ruled out signing a veteran to help fill the void left by Ahman Green.

One option could be Kevan Barlow, who was cut by the New York Jets last month after one subpar season.

Barlow’s agent, Doug Hendrickson, said Monday he had preliminary talks with the Packers on Friday at the University of Michigan’s pro day workout. The odds are long Barlow will sign anywhere before the draft, instead waiting to see where the top rookies land.

“There are two good backs (Oklahoma’s Adrian Peterson and California’s Marshawn Lynch) in the draft,” Hendrickson said. “There’s more maybe later on Day 1 or Day 2. But really, there are two good backs, and the rest are marginal, at best.”

After rushing for |1,024 yards in 2003, the 6-foot-1, 234-pound, sixth-year pro saw his production tail off his last two years with the |San Francisco 49ers. The Jets acquired him with a fourth-round draft pick before last season, but Barlow ran for a career-low |370 yards, fell to third on the depth chart and was released.

It’s unlikely any team will pay anything near the $3.25 million in 2007 or $4 million in 2008 he was due under his old contract.

Hendrickson said Buffalo, Tennessee and Indianapolis also have inquired about Barlow, 28.

Peterson and Lynch, both underclassmen, are considered |first-round locks, but it’s unclear whether either will be on the board when the Packers select at No. 16 overall. For instance, Buffalo, which picks 12th, needs a back after trading Willis McGahee to Baltimore.

There’s not much leftover in free agency. Green (Houston Texans), Travis Henry (Denver Broncos), Jamal Lewis (Cleveland Browns), Dominic Rhodes (Oakland Raiders), Correll Buckhalter (Philadelphia Eagles) and |T.J. Duckett (Detroit Lions), have signed elsewhere.

It is believed Buffalo and Detroit were close to a deal with former Tennessee Titans back Chris Brown but backed off when the price got too high. The Packers have been in contact with Brown’s agent, Wynn Silberman, who did not return a message Monday afternoon.

Even if Packers General Manager Ted Thompson is willing to roll the dice with some combination of Vernand Morency, Noah Herron and Arliss Beach, signing a veteran would provide insurance.

The Packers haven't contacted Corey Dillon, the 32-year-old former Cincinnati and New England back.

“He knows the days of carrying the ball 20 times a game, 25 times a game are gone,” said Dillon’s agent, Steven Feldman. “But he’d like to carry it 10, 12, 15 times.”

Feldman said Dillon is keeping his options open, but wants to join a team “on the verge of the playoffs.”

Younger backs with significant playing experience probably are priced out of the Packers’ range. The San Diego Chargers recently gave restricted free agent Michael Turner — the backup to league MVP LaDainian Tomlinson — a reported $2.35 million tender, ensuring the team will receive first- and third-round draft choices from any team that signs him.

I'm sure most will disagree but I'll go into battle with Vernand Morency instead of Barlow. I actually liked what I saw out of Morency last year, he fits into the packers offense pretty good. Barlow is a overhyped punk that would only bring the team down. They can get Moss to do that.

Pretty sure if they bring Barlow in it will be for a rbbc scenario rather than featuring him.

I think people are writing Barlow off too early. He was recovering from a knee injury last year, and played for a not so dynamic offense with a very raw offensive line. More importantly, even though he went from starter to healthy scratch, he didn't complain and was considered a stabilizing presence on a young offense.

lol @ the Pack tho
You always do. You are clearly a much smarter man than Ted Thompson.
You have to agree that it would be a questionable move (at best). What exactly does Barlow bring to the table??
He can be had dirt cheap. He's a vet. He'll be good camp legs. Or did everyone plan on the Packers running Morency and Herron into the ground in camp? It's March. (And they haven't even signed him yet) People need to relax and not overreact to every little move teams make.Comments like the one above just point out people have a hard time separating 'fantasy' and 'football'.

Ced Houston had a knee injury mid season and still played better. Leon Washington, a 4th round rookie, played better with the same offense/offensive line. Dude. He just sucks.ETA: 2.8 YPC last year. Hasn't gone over 3.4 YPC in the last 3 years.

While the numbers from last year are grim, we've all seen Barlow produce at a much higher level. He is capable of better things, but has not achieved with consistency. But that's true of a lot of backs. If you write everyone off you'll never find a sleeper.

No, I only do when I think it's called for. In fact while I'm sick of Favre, I like GB. And if you don't mind my asking, could you to actually address the topic of the thread, eg a little elaboration on the brilliance of nabbing Barlow would be nice. Thank you Mrs Thompson.

If the price is low...how could it hurt to have a veteran back to take snaps in camp (maybe even cut) or just for depth.I don't think anyone is seeing this as a savior type move or him really doing anything substantial.

That's some pretty serious smack talk coming from a dude who's client is Kevan Barlow.

He'd be great for pre-season games. Can't afford to let the starters and backups get hurt.

I don't think the guy has any clue on how to pick up a blitz.

as a Morency hopeful there isn't better news that you can read than "Kevan Barlow will be brought in to compete for the starting job"

In both SF and NY Barlow underperformed vis-a-vis the other RBs around him, with the same OLs.

Add to that his under-the-bus "nazi" comments about the 49ers after leaving, previous clashes with players (Fred Beasley comes to mind), and the self-important comments he's made a bunch times in his career but without the results to back them up, and I'd have to say that any team bringing him on board gets subtraction by addition even if he were to play for free. For his locker room presence and demeanor alone I wouldn't want him around any of my young guys.

Time to go away, Kevan, and spend the next 50 years telling anyone who will listen how great you were.

I guess Hendrickson isn't, and won't be in the future, representing any other RBs in this draft class.
