Grilling Turkey Burgers... (1 Viewer)

I picked up some turkey patties from the local food store. These were fresh turkey patties that contain small bits of bacon and cheddar within the patty.

I know you can't have turkey patties undercooked they you can a beef burger, so I'm looking for some help.

Should I be using high heat on my mini-propane grill? How long on each side? These patties are about 1.5 inches or so thick. Please help me not ruin dinner for my family. TIA.

Bought some turkey burgers tonight. Put some nice spices on there. Still .... meh. Just not down with these things. :X

Burgers were meant to be made with beef.

Good turkey burger recipe:

- 1lb Ground Turkey Breast

- Chop up some basil leaves

- around a 1/4 cup of bread crumbs or panko crumbs

- 1 egg

- chop up about 1/2 a green pepper

- a bit of salt/pepper

Gently mix up, make 4 patties, cook on stove top until done (about 4 minutes per side on pretty high heat). Can't really grill these because they fall apart. Love regular burgers but these are really good.

I make ranch chicken burgers:

Ground chicken

Ranch seasoning packet

Bread crumbs

Shredded cheddar cheese

Delicious

Yup, I agree with egg and bread crumbs. I also prefer to cook them on stovetop because they are already lean enough.

Breadcrumbs? That's a meatloaf patty, not a burger. Tasty, I would imagine, but let's not go calling it a burger.

That's where I'm at with these too. We use turkey for alot of things like chili, tacos, spaghetti, etc. But when I want a burger, I want beef. Turkey burgers are usually too dry and bland for me.

Felt the same way until I went to my local butcher who had some organic ground turkey that was made with all dark meat. It's absolutely amazing.

I'm reminded of the Parks & Rec contest, where Chris Traeger makes a turkey burger with all of these fancy spices and condiments, and Ron Swanson makes a plain hamburger (nothing on it) and wins the contest.

Haven't eaten red meat in about 10 years (only fish and fowl), but I do miss a regular old cow burger. Just no comparison.

eta: and I don't #### turkeys either.

We are having a cook out at church right after services this Sunday. We did this a month or so ago and it took too long to cook 60 or so burgers on a normal sized gas grill. So the plan is to pre-grill the burger patties on Saturday, and then finish them Sunday. We are planning on getting pre-made frozen patties at Costco, and grilling them over charcoal for about 2-3 minutes per side and then putting them in the refrigerator on a platter until Sunday morning.

I'm a little concerned they'll get too dried out, but what does anyone here think?

I feel like turkey needs moisture to hold together, so I add liquid and fat...I usually make a greek version:

1 lb ground turkey

~1/3 can of Miller Lite

~1/2 package of feta cheese

~2 tablespoons of olive oil

lots of Penzey's Greek seasoning

Do not season the inside of the patties - only the outside. I chop up a bunch of kalamata olives and put that on top. Make sure to oil up the grill so your first side doesn't stick.

I just mixed in some McCormick Hamburger Seasoning last night and threw them right on the grill. Worked fine. Probably about 10 mins a side.

Good point about the oil though. They did stick a bit.

I haven't had any luck making a patty out of the turkey without egg and breadcrumbs. That's the only reason I do it. Otherwise they seems to not stay molded well (best way I can think to put that).

it's ground meat. I'm not sure how you're cooking or preparing where it doesn't stay molded

Not sure if it's because the meat is lean or what but grilling turkey burgers doesn't really work very well even with breadcrumbs/panko and egg.

They cook a lot better for me on the stove.

I never use the extra lean. But I've also never had a tburger not stay molded on its own.
