This is a very good topic. I think there are several players that might be very good choices that normally are not.
The Jets have two - TE Chris Baker and WR Brad Smith - Smith has 22 targets in his last 3 games and Baker has 18. Baker has 11 recs and a TD in those same 3 games. With Cotchery out and Coles questionable, these two should see more action. Miami has a pretty good pass defense (ranked #3) so don't expect HUGE numbers, but someone has to catch passes for the Jets. A total of 12 completions on 27 attempts last week. Who says someone has to catch passes for the Jets (unless you count the ground as 'someone')?
Mark Clayton, BAL - I know what you're thinking... Fool me once shame on you. Fool me twice shame on me. If BAL is going to have any chance at beating NE, they will have to pass the ball. There's the first problem right there. They have no chance. If Phila did in fact create a blueprint for attacking NE, then Clayton is in for a good day. The blueprint is already known -- keep the Pats offense off the field by controlling the clock. I don't think this year's BAL defense can bring the pressure on Brady, and I don't think their offense can sustain the drives the Iggles did. I see a lot of three-and-outs on offense early for BAL, a whole lot of New England going up and down the field, and then when BAL has to pass it gets real ugly.
Fred Jackson, BUF - already mentioned. RB by default, but don't forget, Jackson led the Bills in rushing yards, TDs and receptions in the pre-season. He's a Bills version of Brian Westbrook, without all the accolades. Fred couldn't hold Westbrook's jock. He's a 3rd-stringer behind two hurt guys, so he's playing. No accolades deserved. The Skins will get a lead and the Bills' running game will be an afterthought. I'll give him 70 total yards and no TDs.
Jesse Chatman, MIA - The Jets run defense is poor and he is Miami's only RB worth anything. Patrick Cobbs may get a few carries, but Cameron's guy is Chatman. As long as he is healthy enough to play, he should ave a good game. He practiced on Friday, so things look good. Recently signed Gado, may only see the field if there is an injury. If this thread is about guys you wouldn't normally start, my question is who wouldn't have already been starting Chatman (before his injury)? Also, one good tweak of his ankle on carry #3 and it's Gado/Cobbs time for the rest of the game. That would suck.
Super Sleeper Aveion Cason, DET - It was Cason not Kevin Jones that has been getting more receiving looks out of the backfield. We all know how DET likes to pass. I can see several screen plays and middle screen to Cason peppered all throughout the game, using him as a short-ranged TE almost. Martz has been weirdly fond of Cason, it's true. Also, earlier this year, before getting hurt, Brian Calhoun was getting some receptions. Martz seems to like that scatback type sometimes. But seriously, who in their right mind would pick up and start Cason, with Jones playing, for his 2-3 receptions this week unless there were zero other options at RB?
DeAngelo Williams, CAR - Williams didn't have negative yards rushing and fumble the ball twice like his counterpart DeShaun Foster did. Carolina may be down and out right now, but they have not given up. Perhaps a shake-up of things will help change the outcome. I would not be surprised to see DeAngelo not only get more carries this week against SF, but also produce as a result. I am a Williams owner in two leagues, and I've decided Fox must have caught DeAngelo in bed with his wife or something, because for a 4-7 team still to be playing Foster and not our guy is just kwazy. This is the same offensive braintrust that thought David Carr would make a good backup and possibly push Delhomme for a starting job, then when Carr was starting would let him go entire games without passing to Steve Smith. Anyway, forget DeAngelo. More of the same ol' same ol'. They apparently just don't get it.
