Had to change draft style after first round (1 Viewer)

This isn't a rate my draft thread so i think it can stay here. Just showing off some of the strategies i've learned on this site.

We have to start 3 WR, 2RB, 1QB, 1TE, def and k non ppr 10 team league.

So naturally i went into my draft at #7 with an emphasis on WR cause of the mandatory 3 WR deal. Didn't turn out that way and i ended up following the VBD/Perfect Draft principle instead:

Somehow Turner slipped to me at 7. Grabbed Megatron in the 2nd after Moss went right before me. I was then thinking WR for the next couple of rounds. However when DeAngelo was there in the 3rd i grabbed him. Ok, so now i MUST take WR in 4th right? Nope, somehow after the 3 teams reached for Rivers and Schaup in the early 4th i grabbed Ryan Grant. By doing this my team ended up looking pretty stacked at RB and fairly solid at WR. Yes my QB's are dogsh*t but i'm very happy otherwise.

1.7 Turner

2.4 Mega

3.7 Dwill

4.4 Ryan Grant

5.7 Hakeem Nicks (thanks to this site)

6.4 Malcolm Floyd

7.7 Marion Barber

8.4 Tony Gonzalez

9.7 Stafford

10.4 Eli Manning

11.7 Michael Bush

12.4 Mike Williams Sea

13.7 James Jones

14.4 Snelling

15.7 SD

16.4 Lawrence Tynes

Actually I like your QB's I think Stafford's going to have a good year. Paired with Eli that makes a decent QBBC. Might want to shop Grant for high tier WR on a team that missed the RB boat but other than that looks like the strategy paid off nicely.

not sure why you would draft a a second RB (Barber) for your bench before drafting a 3rd WR or a 1st QB, that makes no sense to me regardless of what principals guide you.

I had a similar experience, where I went in thinking I would go RB heavy to start, convinced that top WRs would fly off the board earlier than my tastes permitted. In the end, I took 2 WRs with my top 3 selections because the value was just too great.

Another example:

Lineups: 1QB, 1RB, 2WR, 2WR/RB flex, 1 TE

Round 1\Pick 2: ADP RB1

Round 2\Pick 19: Fitzgerald WR1

Round 3\Pick 22: Reggie Wayne WR2

Round 4\Pick 39: Jahvid Best RB2

Round 5\Pick 42: Jermichael Finley TE1

Round 6\Pick 59: Arian Foster RB3

Round 7\Pick 62: Jay Cutler QB1 (reach here in retrospect, but QB was looking very bare in my mind)

Round 8\Pick 79: CJ Spiller RB4

Round 9\Pick 82: Hakeem Nicks WR3

Round 10\Pick 99: Ben Roethlisberger QB2

Round 11\Pick 102: Johnny Knox WR4

Round 12\Pick 119: Matthew Stafford QB3

Round 13\Pick 122: Dez Bryant WR5

Round 14\Pick 139: Mike Williams WR6

Round 15\Pick 142: Chicago Bears DEF

Round 16\Pick 159: Greg Olsen TE2

Round 17\Pick 162: Darrius Heyward-Bey WR7

Round 18\Pick 179: Marshawn Lynch RB 5

Round 19\Pick 182: Jeff Reed K

Keep your minds open, don't get locked into positions. If the value is there trust yourself to find it.

He already had 3 WRs (Calvin, Nicks and Floyd) before drafting Barber. It all depends on what's on the board but, unless it's a no trade league, I think grabbing a backup of Barber's quality is a pretty solid move.

When did you draft? Foster at 59 is a steal.

Right before the Week 3 preseason games. I was happy with how late I got Foster as well as Finley. Finley was TE#5 or 6 off the board. Relating to the comment above, I also took another RB before my WR3, which I don't really regret as by that time, the WRs available were trash in comparison to Spiller as bench depth. I wanted the highest upside players I could get, after going "reliable" in the first 3 rounds with guys that have a track record of solid performances.

i had a 3rd WR already and based on VBD Marion Barber was more valuable then any of the QB's left on the board at that point. plan is to hopefully trade a RB for a top flight WR at some point.

you did a nice job as well using that theory. it was hard going against filling positions of need, i will say that. after drafting the same way for 12 years it was tough to change it a bit but i like mine and your outcome.

Hi Snickers,I disagree comepletely. In a recent draft I had which I wrote an entire thread on I had a decision on the 6/7 turn and I already had 2 RBs(ADP/Addai), 2WRs(Wayne/Austin), and a top5 TE(Finley) and I wanted to look at QB however I noticed form the DD software that everyone except myself and 1 other team already had their starting QB. Cutler, Kolb, Flacco, McNabb, and Stafford were all still on the board so I gambled and went ahead and took my WR3 and RB3 with Crabtree and R.Bush for my 6/7 turn picks and then took Kolb in the 8th, Stafford in the 10th, it just worked out that way. You can never have enough talent at RB and WR IMO.

I used DD software to determine same thing about quarterbacks. Problem is, some moron decided to take a backup QB in round 7, leading to 2 other team taking backup QB's before i even took my starter. Very dumb and that is the first time i've ever seen backup qb's go so early in my league but it kinda screwed me.

I would think at that point your roster would be really loaded at all non-qb slots. You shrug it off and add about 3 qb's with upside in the next 4-5 rounds and play matchups or the hot hand.I've used that tactic a ton of times over the years, and it almost always turns out that at least one of my low-value guys turns out to be every bit as good as most of the middle-tier starters everyone believed in. My one team that got saddled with a late round QB buffet this year ended up with Orton, Hasselbeck, and *gasp* Anderson. I'm not panicking yet.
