Hakeem Nicks injured (1 Viewer)

Maybe I'm getting ahead of myself here but IF the Giants were already talking contract extension with Nicks or even planning on chatting this season, I could see where they might hold off given Nicks's constant bumps and bruises. Not saying they won't re-sign him, but I could see the urgency on their end lessening a bit due to this.

This article suggests 12 week recovery time, so any thing earlier might be wishful thinking.

New York Giants receiver Hakeem Nicks underwent successful surgery on his right foot on Friday, the New York Post reported.

Renowned specialist Dr. Robert Anderson performed the operation in Charlotte, N.C., inserting a screw into the wideout's foot to hasten the healing process. Nicks broke the fifth metatarsal in the foot while running a route during Thursday's morning practice session.

Team doctors have set a 12-week recovery timeline, which would sideline Nicks through most of training camp. Peter Schaffer, his agent, told the Post "we will know more next week" about Nicks' return.

Nicks was New York's second-leading receiver last season, but the Giants can compete without him if they're forced to. The way we see it, losing Nicks in May is salvageable; he will play this season. Rueben Randle might have to step into a larger role earlier on, but that will only hasten the rookie's progress. The Giants are old hands at working through injuries and this isn't a shallow group of wideouts.

Hakeem Nicks 'overly optimistic', Giants say

Hakeem Nicks' recovery from a broken foot was expected to take anywhere from 6 to 12 weeks, but the New York Giants are tempering hopes for the wideout's hasty return from surgery to repair a broken foot.

Team spokesman Pat Hanlon told ESPN's Sal Paolantonio on Wednesday that Nicks' projection of returning to the Giants by training camp is "overly optimistic," according to our friends at Rotoworld.com.

Hanlon doesn't expect the Giants' second-leading pass-catcher from last season to participate in drills before the end of the 12-week recovery period.

Coach Tom Coughlin is confident Nicks' replacement can be found from within, and dismissed the notion of pursuing free agent Plaxico Burress.

We also have this from ESPN New York's Ohm Youngmisuk on Wednesday:

Domenik Hixon is working with Victor Cruz and the first team with Hakeem Nicks out.

This falls in line with what we projected after Nicks went down.

We've said all along the Giants can forge ahead without the receiver. We expect Nicks to be ready for the season opener, but the team is deep at the position and Coughlin is a master at preparing reserves for a larger role when called upon. The Giants refuse to panic and won't rush Nicks back before it's time.

Hakeem Nicks (foot surgery) told WFNZ in his hometown of Charlotte that he'll "definitely" be healthy in training camp.

Nicks revealed that he's shed his walking boot and resumed running on his own. "Definitely making training camp," Nicks promised. "I started running about two weeks [ago] but the coaches don’t really want me to force the issue right now. ... They want me to just take my time with it — they feel like that’s what’s best. ... But I’ll definitely be ready for the season." We never adjusted Nicks' fantasy projection based on his injury. He'll be a mid-range WR1 target in 2012 drafts.
