Handcuffing a backup QB (1 Viewer)

In start 2 QB leagues or large ones with a passing TD premium, QBs naturally have a higher value to them. And the higher end QBs have higher draft picks associated with them so more of a team is invested in their success. Do you think handcuffing a backup to your stud QB is ever a good idea? If so, who are some of the ones this year that are worth grabbing? Mallett for Brady? Flynn for Rodgers? VY for Vick?

Ask yourself some of the same questions you'd ask when handcuffing your RB:

1. is the starting QB worth handcuffing?

2. is there a high likelihood of the backup playing?

3. is the backup any good?

4. does the team have a lot of weapons that could help the backup to be productive?

5. even if the backup takes over, would he outperform the other QBs available on the waiver wire?

And even if you answer "Yes" to 3 out of 5 questions, it still might not be worthwhile to grab the backup (see: Kerry Collins).

Some of this depends on the size of your roster. In a 12 team league with 20 roster spots each there are only a couple I might roster as a 3rd QB as long as I didn't have a more urgent need at another position or to tempting a waiver wire pickup. The two?. Young as Vick's handcuff and maybe, maybe, S. Hill, since he put up good numbers filling in for Stafford last year. In a ten team 1 QB league there are no QB handcuffs worth having on your roster.

It really comes down to roster size. Take one of my leagues as an example... 12 teams, essentially a start 2 QB though the second QB is a QB/RB flex. 19 players start each week (11 offense, 6 IDP, kicker and head coach), and then there are an additional 15 roster spots for backups. In that league, I think most every NFL backup QB should be rostered because of scarcity and the fact that even an NFL backup QB who starts will generally outscore the RB3 you'd start in the flex otherwise. If it was a pure 2 QB required league not via flex, then I think the importance of backing up your starters is even more crucial. Especially for the 4 teams who don't get a QB3. They definitely should have both of their starters backed up, and should probably try to cherry pick a quality backup from someone else.Of course that league has the roster space to handle it. I think a 12 team, start 2 QB league should really have room for 5 QBs plus enough spaces to handle the needs at other positions. So you can have 3 starters and then back up two of them.

10-team league. Start 2 QB.

20 roster spots total. 11 starters.

Took A. Rodgers #3.

I dropped A. Collie after news on Thursday to grab M. Flynn before the opener. Not looking back.

Think Flynn is a nice lottery ticket in 2-qb league.
