Hardesty's knee not so good (1 Viewer)

Hardesty looked good last night. Let me also say that he has zero chance of unseating Peyton Hillis...EVER!!! Hillis is the NFL definition of a beast at RB.

Hardesty looked good though. I was impressed since the run blocking was hit and miss. He was able to gain yards after contact which is important in Cleveland where you might not always have a gaping hole to slash through. His 1st and 2nd carries of the game he made about 4-5 yds and took some folks with him. His 3rd carry, he was in a shotgun formation and when he took the handoff he had 2 guys waiting to wrangle him down, not sure what you can do in that situation. He will make a nice RB2/3 with Brandon Jackson for Cleveland.

Hillis is still going to get 20+ touches a game.
Well we agree that Hardesty isn't going to unseat Hillis.Outside of that I can't agree to much in your post. I had to go watch his carries again because I'm not seeing it. Hardesty looked fairly pedestrian. O.K., but it's not like my pants are even close to tight. The reason he "took folks with him" is because he isn't bursting through holes or shedding poor arm tackles. Then Cleveland has one of the better left sides in the league. LT-Joe Thomas/LG-Eric Steinbach/C-Alex Mack. Not bad.

1st attempt: He had ZERO yards on his first carry. Not 4-5.

2nd: His second carry he had a nice hole and hit it fairly well, but Coleman was waiting for him on the other side. Instead of trying to make a move outside to hit another nice seam he put his head down and muddled toward midfield where a pack of linemen/coleman were and fell forward for two more yard for a total of 5.

3rd: He's got a massive hole on the left. The next guy is a good six yards on the other side of that and he's got blocking in front. All he has to do is burst through Fokou's arm sticking out while falling another direction and being blocked(yeah the same guy Hillis ran directly over). He couldn't. Fokou hangs on and Hardesty falls forward for a hair over 3 yards and gets a good spot to make 4.

4th: a 1st and 20 to go so they go to the old draw. Hardesty had massive holes. He hesitates and looked slow going right ahead where he's met by Matthews and falls forward for 3. Granted Matthews made a good play but Matthews doesn't get to the ball fast enough on the path he took if Hardesty showed the slightest burst like you'd expect on a typical draw.

5th: 2nd and 17 run over the right. Not much room to run. Hardesty finds a little where he's hit after 2 yards and falls forward for another.

That's it. Are you seeing something I'm not?

I don't know MOP....Hillis wasn't brought in to be the bellcow....he did terrific last year but with his style he'll go off a cliff fast. Clev has terrific run blocking and I'm looking to add Hardesty late in every league. It could absolutely be a thunder and lightning combo.

Eric Steinbach? No offense but he is one of the worst starting LG in all of football my friend. Don't take my word for it, check out his ratings on other sites, not good, not good.

I must have missed the 1st carry. You and I have a different impression of the 2nd carry for sure. I saw a guy not go down on first contact. Not every RB can just bounce it outside. That's easier to write and much harder to execute. I thought the 3rd carry he showed nice ability to gain positive yds. I'll go back and look as I am doing the game recap this week for PHI/CLE but I thought Hardesty looked alright. Hillis ran over a LB, you can't expect Hardesty to do that like Hillis does. Hillis ran wide left and stiff armed Mathews but I don't really see Hardesty doing that right now.

I'm just offering up the suggestion that Hardesty for his first real action looked OK. Everyone has to start somewhere coming back form an injury and I think it is unfair to be overly critical of him at this stage. I would rather focus on what he is doing right and if he continues to progress then some of these other things will start to fall in place for him.

PS-That draw play with massive holes, you must be watching something different than me. I saw 2 guys right at the LOS or perhaps a little on Cleveland's side of the line waiting to wrap him up. There might have been a hole 10-15 yds to the other side but he had no chance to get to it. I don't feel like you are being as objective as you could be.

I understand and he might break down over the season but he sure can do some damage to a LB...that guy #53 last night for Philly didn't know what hit him after that 1st carry. Then Hillis took a couple more guys with him for another 3 yds on that play...he is the 2nd coming of Larry Csonka. I don't want to be Fullback Prejudice as Rzrback has coined the term this off season. Hillis was going deep into the end zone on a fade/streak up the sideline into the end zone and he almost caught it. He's got some athletic ability that I overlooked. Hillis fans need not bring the war paint and pitchforks this year into the RB weekly.

I agree that Hillis is the man. I disagree that Hardesty looked good. I wasn't impressed with his agility at all. 3 yards and a cloud of dust doesn't a successful NFL/Fantasy back make.Maybe he'll improve as the knee recovers (if it does).

Whatever we do, we need to make sure we overanalyze and perform heavy statistical analysis of five carries.

Steinbach is a moot point, it looks like that rookie that got the start, Pinkston, is going to be the guy this season with Steinbach's back problems. Pinkston is a much better run blocker. Either way he's between two very good linemen. I just really hope this isn't his 100%, if he recovers a bit more of the burst he used to have he'll be OK.

With Jackson looking to be out for awhile (if not the season), obviously this has to bump Hardesty a bit.

In case you need a source...Jackson (turf toe) will miss no more than six weeks, ESPN's Adam Schefter reports.Spin: A Cleveland Plain Dealer report from Friday suggested Jackson's season might be over, but that was difficult to believe. It seems unlikely that Cleveland would put Jackson on IR given Montario Hardesty's constant knee issues.Fri, Aug 26Per Rotowire
