Harper vs. Trout (1 Viewer)

These two kind of look like they are going to be linked together for at least the beginning of their careers. Which one has the better fantasy future for say the next 5 years?

From what I have read, Trout looks to be a .300 20-25 HR 30-40 SB guy, while Harper is a .280 35-45 HR 10 SB guy. Would I be correct in that assumption? Just wondering because I have Harper in a dynasty and could get Trout if I wanted to give up Harper. So in 5 years who is going to be the top 5 player, Harper? Trout? Both? Neither?

I'm starting to come around on Trout. As he's gained confidence, he is really impressive. I think you have Trout pegged and Harper may yet be a 20sb guy, but I'm starting to lean Trout.

Yeah you are selling Harper's speed short. Generally speaking Harper is overrated compared to Trout as they are going to be fairly similar (awesomeness), but Harper's power probably makes him the better fantasy guy and his arm probably makes him the better real player.

How bout at the end of their careers? Who ends up with the better numbers?

Watching Trout against the Yanks right now. SO impressive. Quick bat and effortless speed.

In 5x5 fantasy terms, the power/speed potential of Trout gives him an advantage. The comparative scarcity of SBs make them more valuable than the other offensive categories.

They're very close at this point. Uncontrollable events like injuries will probably be what separates them over time.

am i wrong in thinking those power numbers for trout might be a little low? 12 hrs in 64 games as a 20 year old (along with that short quick swing) leads me to think he could be a consistent 30+ hr guy.

it would also seem like he might be closer 50 steals per year than 30.

We're projecting 19 and 20 year olds. They could develop in a number of other upward directions

I, for one, will not be putting any statistical limits on Trout. The first name which came to mind when watching him was Bo Jackson. And I don't throw that around lightly.

i'm not sure that injuries are purely uncontrollable, given Harper's style.

That's a valid point. There are guys who play baseball like it's football. They usually end up having careers like football players.

i was just pondering earlier this week how crazy it would be to offer Trout a 15 or 20 year contract. Probably nuts, but how sweet would it be for a team to have him locked in for, say, a dozen years, and get his age 20-31 seasons?

I will have that decision in the spring of 2014 and will likely give the longest contract the league has seen in almost thirty years of playing with the same guys. There have been some (Longoria is the current example)who were drafted as minor leaguers and thus had a $5 contract for their first two years before their option year and then had three years added so they were at $20 for the last four years of a six year stint with their original team. Will be interesting to see what happens next year to alter my current leaning of having him at $25, so seven seasons of 5,5,25,25,25,25,25of course there is the flip side - buying him out of the contract costs twice the remaining value.....

I think Harper will continue to play a little smarter as he goes along. I'd take either one of em for the next 15 years. And right now I'm salivating over the prospect of a World Series matchup in the next few.. very well could happen.Trout sure seems like the better player all around.. Bryce got personality though, personality goes a long way.

This is a conversation we usually have in the NFL with rookie QBs. This never happens in baseball. I can't think off hand of 2 guys like this who were rookies in the same season.

They are both extremely talented and should have long careers. It is hard to say which one will be better than the other. Angels and Nationals are lucky to have these guys on their respective teams.

Really good SI cover story on Trout this week. By the numbers, they concluded he's having the best season by a rookie... ever.

My favorite part of the story: during the 2009 MLB draft, the Nationals were on the clock again, after already having selected Strasburg 1.01. Trout's name came up, and one of the scouts in the room mentioned that he looked "a little stiff."

They eliminated him from consideration and took Drew Storen instead.

How decent would the Nats look going forward with Strasburg, Harper and Trout?

(No word on if that scout still has a job.)
