Harris Football - Top Rookie RBs for 2021 (1 Viewer)

Harris’ take on any rookie

”Yeah, he’s OK...I guess...at that price he’s probably not going to end up on any of my teams.”

But srsly one of my favorite podcasters, never miss an episode. I know he’s high on Sermon (bc Waldman told him he’s #1 & he respects Matt’s college evaluations.) He always has some good zingers mixed in with his comments.

(Najee)

What if Kalen Ballage could play? What if D’Onta Foreman had known which way to go? What if Karlos Williams hadn’t inhaled backwards? We’ve heard the siren’s song of the big guy who can run fast plenty of times. They don’t all turn out to be Steven Jackson.

But Harris (no relation) has a real chance. I snickered when people tried to make his former Alabama teammate Damien Harris (also no relation) a thing. He wasn’t the one we were waiting for. But this kid has a chance to be terrific.

What could go wrong in his rookie year? Well, I could simply be wrong. Sometimes Alabama players look better than they turn out to be. Maximum touches are nobody’s birthright. If Harris isn’t ready to pass protect, or if he struggles in short yardage despite his size, or if he turns the ball over, the Steelers will find someone else to play. That’s the way it works, despite all the talk you’ll hear about first-round draft capital. I don’t think Harris is destined to be considered a top-five RB over the course of his career. But in a year when a lot of RB2s make you nervous, Najee’s payout could at least be S-Jax-lite.

Yeah, he went on to say that watching Sermon's video he saw an inconsistent player who didn't quite stack up to Waldman's gushing praise. And also Sermon wasn't just a guy Waldman was high on - Waldman apparently had Sermon as the RB1 in this draft, before they know what team he'd be on.  That's bold.

I mentioned this in a topic a month ago & was solidly shot down by the draft capital argument. Can't recall if it was the Harris topic or one of the other rookie RBs. Might have been Javonte Williams, now that I think about it. Like Harris (no relation) I don't see Gordon as being washed, just not as good as he was. And he was very good at one point. So if JWill struggles with football things, I expect Gordon to be a thorn in the side of JWill owners all season.

I would absolutely draft JWill high in Dynasty because I believe he's the future & Gordon is gone after 2021. But this year is a different story & expectations might need to be tempered.

Important to remember that the 49ers trade up to get him...he's going to get run.

I think Harris is funny but I don't think he knows anything more about these players than most of you do.

I watch all of the NFL games too, try to watch most of the top prospect games in college.   But never hurts to get another opinion from someone that you know watches every play.

Oh I know - I’m a Niner fan and very excited about Sermon.

And I know Mostert’s injury history as well as anyone, too.

I will be looking draft Sermon in redraft. But hopefully as a RB4-5 because I’m pretty sure it’ll be Mostert until he gets hurt.

Targeting Sermon everywhere as well.

I like that in his almanac he references specific plays - sometimes 4-5 (with game timestamps) so you can look up on GamePass what he’s talking about. He’s not infallible but he has a few hits every year that nobody else predicts. He also calls our pyrite players that aren’t actually that good so if/when the awesome situation changes...

Everyone has hits and misses. He’s had a pretty good ratio for a long time.

He does watch a hell of a lot more film than I do, that’s for sure.
My two favorite fantasy analysts are Harris and JJ Zachariason, precisely because they take such different approaches. Harris, as mentioned, relies almost entirely on film. JJ is very numbers driven, but he digs way deeper than most people and doesn't just cherry-pick stats to make a point (cough, cough, Matthew Berry).

No one's perfect, but I've had a good track record in the past few years of balancing their opinions with my own. The ones that come to mind are Kittle during his breakout year, Rodgers last year, and Justin Jefferson as an early-season WW add. Also, every single year Harris finds that mediocre RB who is getting overdrafted because of "opportunity" and warns us off of him: Alex Collins, Miles Sanders and, this year, Miles Gaskin/Damien Harris. He has a very good track record on that front.

have to be careful with Shanahan and his RBs. he's the same guy who wanted J. McKinnon and paid an absurd amount of cash for the guy, which left pundits and fellow coaches scratching their heads.despite the injury, McKinnon was nowhere near the free agent gem that they envisioned.

Shanny ran out 4 RBs last season and everyone got a piece of the pie and no one went over 1k yards.

doesn't matter that they traded up for Sermon and it doesn't mean that they're going to use him anymore than anyone else. They had a void to fill when Breida left.

IF, a big IF,  Mostert keeps it together and plays 17 games, this is going to be the single most frustrating RBBC in the history of RBBCs. this has a worse feel to it than the NE backfield situation.

There's a lot of obstacles in place for Sermon, whereas guys like Javonta Williams and Michael Carter have MUCH easier paths to fantasy relevance , both with incompetent RBs in their way. JW should pass Gordon after this weekend. Carter should be the opening day starter. Both figure to get a ton of carries as rookies, and neither should be in a RBBC.

I really want to take a guy like Sermon, but I just don't see him becoming a pro bowl type RB in a Shanny offense which has been RBBC since he was in atlanta. follow the trend.

Harris is superb at what he does, love his episodes!

one thing about Shanahan that’s a misconception is that he’s a RBBC Guy.

he absolutely sticks with a lead dog, save to spell him, and then when someone gets hurt it’s next man up.

I’m just not completely sure Sermon is the next man up.  If Gallman is cut we’ll know.

Mostert value play IMO.

I stopped listening after "I don't think Raheem Mostert is all that fast."
he’s not a speedster anymore at his age. He sometimes ran through holes the side of an SUV that made it look faster than he was.

Where I disagreed is where he said he played less powerful than he was. I saw Moster lower his shoulder plenty of times. Probably what gets him hurt so often.

https://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2021/02/20/raheem-mostert-was-the-fastest-ball-carrier-of-the-2020-season/

"Specifically, according to the NFL’s Next Gen Stats, Mostert was the single fastest ball carrier in the NFL in 2020 when he reached a top speed of 23.09 mph on a touchdown run against the Jets. Mostert was also the second-fastest ball carrier when he hit 22.73 mph on another play."

I dunno. They also traded up to the third round to draft CJ Beathard, and up to the second round to draft Dante Pettis. I'm not highlighting misses, just saying they have been more than willing to trade up and if they feel they missed more than willing to move on if the player doesn't pan out. Some franchises rarely move up in a draft and they will die on that hill if they make a bad investment so they don't lose face but SF doesn't seem to really fit that mold.

Not saying I think Sermon is a bust, just that he will likely either sink or swim on his merit. I don't have much of an opinion either way although it seems like Sermon is getting more than his share of summer hype thus far from the fantasy community. Kind of hoping Sermon will rumble for a 50-yard TD vs a bunch of future CFL players in the second half of a preseason game so that Sermon starts going even earlier.

Dear @Tanner9919and @Hot Sauce Guy

Which is it?  RBBC Guy or not?

Curious because I think like Tanner but appreciate Hot Sauce Guy’s perspective as a San Fran fan.
Shananhan is loyal to his RBs. It hasn’t been a RBBC. He’s had a feature back and a breather back. When the feature back gets hurt it’s next man up.

now, that said, the Niners also call an at-times no traditional offense. Deebo will get carries, Juice will get carries, he’ll do wacky things at the GL sometimes.

Bur if Mostert’s name is 1 on the depth chart and he doesn’t have a little red + next to it, he’s going to get the bulk of the touches.

And when he gets hurt, next man up. Note: I didn’t say “if”.

Sure. Once. Maybe twice. Then he got hurt.

I had him last year. I loved both of his 80+ yard touchdowns. And then he was a paperweight the rest of the year.

And now he’s a year older.

Thanks dude.  Didn't get to watch many San Fran games the last couple seasons so wasn't sure of actual game usage.

One hedge: it is possible that Shanny moved up for Sermon to bring him in as a RBBC guy. Just because Shanny’s been a 1-back dude doesn’t mean he can’t change.

And he did have quite the RB carousel last year. And as we saw, he wasn’t afraid to start a rookie.

maybe, just maybe he brought in Sermon to play with Mostert because Mostert can’t handle a huge workload.

All possible.

Not trying to be a stickler on something that's not that important.  But he's clearly a speedster, whether he got hurt or not.
