Agree, well deserved. Personally, I think Ware is more beastly on the defesive side than Harrison, but considering the politics of the situation (lack of # of defensive Steelers selected to Pro-bowl vs. their #1 ranked NFL defense), giving Harrison the Defensive player award helps balance things out some. Plus Steelers are in playoffs and Cowboys folded in December yet again, so that plays into the vote some as well.Harrison 22 votesWare 13 votesWell deserved IMO
I think you perfectly summed up what I think of the situation. Harrison had a great year as part of a fantastic team. Ware had an even better individual year on a lesser team.Agree, well deserved. When the votes went in, he was in the midst of his current tear. But from game 1 to 16, Ware and Harrison were more deserving.I agree, but would have thought Ed Reed would garner more votes....
Porter?SILVERBACK
Certainly - Ware, Reed, Polamalu and Haynesworth desrved some recognition in '08 also.
Geez, is that his nickname? is he aware of this?SILVERBACK
That would be a Mr. James Harrison. They call him “Silverback,” because, as a Mr. Clark Haggans once said: “They’re big, strong gorillas from the Congo, the silverback gorilla. They spend their days swinging on trees and breaking stuff. All the other apes and everyone in the jungle are afraid of him.”
Haggans said that two years ago and I haven’t used it until now. The reporters are the only people in the locker room who don’t call Harrison “Silverback.” One reason is he doesn’t like it. The other reason is the racial overtone. So now the linebackers think we’re racist because we DON’T use the name. ”
didn't catch Ed enough this year, had him on an FF IDP team though and he had some real rough weeks. I would have guessed this was not one of his best years-granted he's had some great ones but...seemed like second(last 8) was when he came on.Hard to argue against Harrison, but Ed Reed would have been my pick.
Rrrrrreally thought this was Haynesworth's year. He was spectacular. At this point though Titans keep almost winning or being 2nd 3rd place for awards it's kinda grrr. Harrison was terrific, no prob with the choice really. It seemed Ware was "the only good player" on the Cowboys some weeks so one could surely make a strong case for him too. It's a shame all those plays he made and they couldn't scheme to be a top defense.SILVERBACK

The Steelers signed him as a rookie free agent in 2002 and then cut him three times over the next two seasons, although he played briefly as a rookie. Baltimore also signed him and sent him to NFL Europe before cutting him.
Probably the only reason Harrison is here today, besides his persistence, was the broken hand starting left outside linebacker Clark Haggans sustained 10 days before the 2004 training camp opened. The Steelers needed another linebacker and dialed Harrison's number.
"If he doesn't break his hand, I am not here," Harrison said.
Harrison's demeanor was so menacing that even one of his former position coaches, Mike Archer, was quoted as saying he could not wait for him to be cut. Harrison matured and focused his menacing nature on opponents rather than his own coaches and teammates.
Nice article. Glad James finally grew up...for him and for the Steelers.AhrnCityPahnder said:
IMO these are the two that dominated games the most this year. Given that Reed has gotten some recognition and probably will again, I have no problem with giving it to Harrison.Hard to argue against Harrison, but Ed Reed would have been my pick.
Harrison seems like a good guy and I am pissed off at my boys anyway so it doesn't bother me that much that Ware got slighted. Ware is obviously the better and more consistent of the two but it is a nice underdog story. BTW what playoff team does Drew Brees play for?Agree, well deserved.
