Harrison versus Haynesworth (1 Viewer)

I thought Haynesworth was better last year but with an awesome season for both, I could envision Harrison as defensive player of the year. Harrison did wind up winning D player of the year.

Harrison was signed to a 6 year 51.75 million dollar contract

Haynesworth was signed to a 7 year 100 million dollar contract

Why is Haynesworth's deal worth so much more?

understanding it's 1 year less, one is nearly half the other.

take some away for maybe accepting less money to re-sign with original team?

Harrison should fire his agent?

What are your thoughts here?

#1 You have to look at the guaranteed money in such a scenario, not the overall.

#2 Harrison was dealing with the Steelers, who basically don't overpay for anyone, ever. Haynesworth signed with Washington, who bids against themselves and overpays for everybody.

#3 Harrison may have taken less to stay with Pittsburgh because it's the ideal situation for him.

#4 D-line is a position that carries more of a premium with it than LB, much like QBs and OTs almost always make more than TEs or FBs.

No, Harrison shouldn't fire his agent. Polamalu got extended last year at 5 yrs/$33 million with less than $16 million guaranteed. Harrison got $4 million more in bonus money and almost $2 million more per year. Not bad for a UFA.

Add in age also. Harrison is about to turn 31 and Haynesworth is only about to become 28.

But contract structure really makes these overall contracts so untrue in the end. Harrison will never see 6 years. Haynesworth probably wont see his full contract either.

I'm trying to remember the exact numbers, but Haynesworth's deal is effectively a 5-year, $55M deal once you discard the last couple of years when his base salary skyrockets.

Haynesworth's deal is really a 4 year, ~$48 mil. The rest is table dressing to make the agent look good. Albert will never see the $100 mil. Take a look at the annual payments and you'll see why.

I believe the same can be said about Harrison's contract. The last couple years are likely simple window dressing.

More relevant is Haynesworth was guaranteed $41mil, while Harrison was only guaranteed $20 mil.

Age plays a priority role in those numbers I know, but the respective teams spending habits are readily apparent as well.

With an uncapped year looming it all may be a moot point, but the value per dollar is far greater in Harrison's contract than Haynesworth's.

Haynesworth is a superior player, but the most important thing is that he had all the leverage he could ever want. Harrison had none. What's he gonna do, hold out?

That's the best thing about extending players -- you don't have to outbid the market.
