you're right!

DROUGHNS SLIPS TO NO. 3; WARD BEHIND JACOBS

. Compiled by FootballDiehards Editor Bob Harris Bob Harris | Posted Thursday September 6, 2007 @ 10:15 PT

According to the latest release of the Giants official depth chart, Reuben Droughns is now listed as the No. 3 tailback behind starter Brandon Jacobs and Derrick Ward.

Droughns was acquired in an offseason trade with the Browns, and most league observers assumed he'd split touches with Jacobs as the Giants try to fill the void created by the retirement of Tiki Barber.

But as Profootballtalk.com's Mike Florio suggests, this development could mean that Jacobs will get the bulk of the work. At a minimum, Florio added, that means if anyone is sharing reps with the starter, it won't be Droughns.

This is good news for Jacobs, but Dallas is going to be a huge test for him. I ended up with Jacobs in one league (he generally went to early for my taste) but I'm not sold on him and think the Giants rushing game is going to be a big cluster#### this season.

I also wouldn't get too excited about Ward since he likely won't get a lot of work without an injury to Jacobs. If that does happen, expect full RBBC with Ward and Droughns.

Also, for the people who wrote off Antonio Pittman for getting cut before the season - Ward was cut by the Jets before the season his rookie year.

It seems that statements like this is the vogue thing to say in the shark pool. I can't tell you how many posts I've read where it says if the main guy goes down it will be a RBBC between #2 and #3.

Droughns is starting at FB right.... so ofcourse hes not going to be #2 on the dpth chart.

So real surprise for me (own BJ in 2 Dynastys)... once I heard that Droughns was moved to FB, I figured that BJ would be getting a loinshare.

Its funny... theres no Strahan on that chart

I knew that as I wrote it, but Droughns has rushed for 1200 yards twice while Ward has 35 carries (3.5 YPC) in 3 years. Anything could happen, but Ward getting the full load is a long shot.

Derrick Ward is, like Droughns, more of a straight-line bruiser. Neither are particularly known for their hands. I still think we'll see Ahmad Bradshaw involved a lot as the third down back - a guy more in the mold of Tiki than either of those other three.I do think the Giants could be a cluster#### this year, but not because of talent. And for the most part, I agree, he has been going too early for my tastes - but if you're willing to take a chance on him, he could win a lot of championships this year. For those of you who have had the benefit of watching Jacobs in past preseasons, you'll know he's much more than a big back. He is actually pretty fast - in the 4.5 range (he is agile but suffers a little from lateral agility, which can be expected for someone his size). He also has decent hands. My point is that he's more than just a big short-yardage back - he was used much differently in regular season with Tiki around than he was in the preseason as the primary ballcarrier. His combination of size and straight speed make him very dangerous in space. Of course, on top of that, you know he's going to get his TDs, so his floor is fairly high as well.

What's funny is the thought of anyone outside that huge Native America dude from the Longest Yard (Sandler) blocking for Jacobs

If BJ got hurt... Droughns would be moved to RB #1.... I'm pretty sure of that.
Sort of off-topic, but I swear you could replace "BJ" with "Travis Henry" and "Droughns" with "Mike Bell" in that sentence and be correct there too.

I think the thing to look at here is that the Giants are trying to get their two best RB's on the field as much as possible. If Droughns is playing full back the majority of the time it will come as a surprise to the D when the full back gets a short pass in the flat (fake the hand off to Jacobs with Drougns leading the way and then dump to Droughns).

Basically, Coughlin is keeping as many of his top weapons on the field as possible. Who will spell BJac? Probably Ward. But if BJac goes down, then I see them moving to Droughns as the starter and Ward taking Drougns' fullback role.

I believe all indications are that Caughlin likes Ward as a player more than Droughns.

Droughns, Ward, even Jacobs have played at least spot duty at FB, short yardage back, and typical RB even if for a series or so. Each player has been quite useful to their coaches. I don't expect anything different. I could see Ward spelling Droughns at FB for a play.

The odd man out seems to be Bradshaw, at the moment. However, I don't think that's the plan. I think he'll still be in on some 3rd downs. All offseason the Giant coaches have said over and over how they don't think any D can stop a fresh Brandon Jacobs in the 4th Q. I think that's still the gameplan. Trade off who pounds away at them and unleash Brandon after so many carries when the D seems tired. They've got depth, I think they're gonna use it.

Coughlin looked annoyed when asked what he thought of Droughns' comments that he didn't want to play FB. Ward is the utility type that would do anything the coach asked and give it his all. I could imagine you getting that impression then but any coach would feel that way if a player said I wanna do this but not that. Seems everything is fine now

What's even funnier is getting a loinshare. I don't know about you, but that sounds awfully dirty to me and is probably against the personal conduct policy.

Yet Droughns is still drafted. Probably the safer bet.... and perhaps a technically with RD at fullback. We know what Droughns can do... quite serviceable performance. A week one last-minute slot into the #2 slot with a down of regular season football... we don't know.

What the Jints should do... is get Jared Lorenzen at fullback... afterall he's 5 inches taller and 65 pounds heavier than Droughns.... and still a bit taller and bigger than Jacobs. Imagine that freakin' double rumble combo coming at some "puny" 6'2" 230 lb LB ... ;-)

I think Jacobs has been the most slept on RB by ppl here. It seems people either love him or hate him. I wouldn't say I love him, but based on what I think he's going to produce (1100/180, 10+), and where he's going, I think he's a steal in round 3 and on.

This news only boosts his stock, and barring injury, I dont see how he doesn't put up those #'s for the G-men. Maybe less yardage, but probably more TD's
