has anyone ever played with a pro player? (1 Viewer)

A torn ACL ended my football days too early to play with anyone - but I played against Jason Lane (RF for the Houston Astros) every year in little league all stars and then was on the same high school team. He was our center fielder and #1 pitcher then, so I caught him every time he started and you could tell that he had the drive and emotion to go pro even then. He's a hell of a guy I'm glad to see that someone from my little no-where NorCal town made it to the show.

Both of my brothers had future NFLers as teammates (Rashaan Salaam and Shane Walton), but not me.I played against a future NBAer. (I always forget his name. Four-year starter at UCLA, second-round pick. It'll come to me after I het "reply".)

Hehe great thread...Closest I ever came was seeing Jason Elam kicking FGs and XPs in high school for a rival school. He graduated the same year as me ('93). Man could he boom them even back then...

Toby Bailey?Jason Kapono?

No, no. If he was in my class, he would have come out in 1992. But he may have been a year younger. (Actually, he may have been undrafted. I don't remember for sure. Mostly a defensive player, even in college. He lasted a few years in the NBA. It'll come to me . . .)

I played against Barlow and Darnel Dinkens (Ravens) in H.S. Dinkens was at QB, ridiculous athlete at that level, I did have some very nice shots on him but he also made me and the rest of the teams look foolish many times. I was not all that impressed with Barlow at the time.

I played against Chuck Cecil in HS twice. He played LB back in the day and I had to block him. I got the better of him on a few plays but for the most part he was hard to block and made way to many tackles. He did hit like a ton of bricks.

A very good friend's brother QB'd against Jim Kelly in High School (twas a couple years before my time). We got our arses whipped. He's the only pro that I know of that came out of our very small High School league.Another one of those cases where you knew he was going to be something.

Went to gradeschool with Mike Rosenthal - offensive lineman for the Vikings. Played soccer with him back then, and he was by far the biggest kid in the school. Moved from Pittsburgh to Indiana when we were in 5th or 6th grade. Also played one on one basketball with Charles Barkley... when I was 10. I got to be a ballboy at an exhibition NBA game in Pittsburgh between the Rockets and 76ers. Met Hakeem Olajuwon and Hersey Hawkins that day too, although I was too young to really appreciate it.

Didn't play against him because he was a few years older...but former University of Minnesota and Green Bay Packer (1st rounder) Daryl Thompson went to HS 40 minutes down the road at a school in our conference. It was like watching a man run through a group of Pop Warner kids. He would score 3 or more TDs on us every year!

Mitchell Butler

Picked off twice in one game by Jay Bellamy.Recovered a Keith Elias fumble.Scott Conover (Lions OL) was my LT for one year.

I sat next to Dan Campbell in Rhet/Comp the fall semester of my sophomore year at Texas A&M.I ref'd Dat Nguyen and Ty Warren in a few intramural soccer games. :lmao:

FWIW, I played with Sal Aunese. You might remember him as the QB of the Univ. of Colorado team that died from stomach cancer. He was asenior when I was freshman and didn't play that much. As a junior I played against Lincoln Kennedy. He played both ways and I was an O-lineman. I will not lie. He was a senior and I a junior and he beat me a few times in the first half. I got the better of him in the second half because he was tired and was not the best conditioned athlete. Also, played against John Lynch. As an offensive lineman he and I did not have a lot of contact but butted helmets a few times when we played Torrey Pines. In college I played against a few guys that went pro even though the conference we played in was the Big West. Oh yeah, Phil Nevin was our kicker and my freshamn roommate although he plays baseball now but could have gone to the NFL had he chosen to stay with football.

Played against Bertrand Berry, Cedric Jones (played DE for the Giants a bit I believe), Corey Sears (Texans DL), and Donovan Greer (DB for the Bills a few years). Berry was a stud LB; he was all over the field and he was only a sophomore. He's from the same school as David Boston, maybe that explains why Berry's so much bigger now too. My kids will go to that high school if I don't move in a few years, so I guess I'll be on the lookout for growing hat sizes and the like. Almost got to run into big Sam Adams but his team lost in the playoffs before we would have played them...Played against Jose Cruz, Jr., Andy Pettitte, Mike Sirotka (ex-White Sox), and Justin Thompson (ex-Tiger) in baseball. Those last 3 were nasty, nasty pitchers. Thompson was as nasty as they come but arm problems ruined his career. Had a friend who dated Sirotka's sister, she was pretty hot. Then there's Pettitte. Funny thing is, we played his team in a double elimination tournament, and their other pitcher (Jay Vaught, went to UT) was the one who got all the pub. He was undefeated at the time, but we beat him to force a second game. Needless to say, we were up on our high horses. Our coach (also a scout for the Pirates) told us we hadn't done anything yet, that the next guy (Pettitte) was probably better. I think we got one infield hit, and he already had that ridiculously good move to 1st base. Don't think our guy even took one foot off the bag, and I guess coach was right...

HB, you went to San Marcos High then?

I went to the same school that current pro's Todd Devoe and Roderick Green played for. Todd is a WR with Denver and Roderick is a OLB/DE for Baltimore. I was older than them so when I quit after my Freshman year, they were just getting to Central Missouri State, a D-II school near Kansas City.

I've never played with/against any pro athletes. However...-A former coworker was a high school teammate of Mike Alstott at Joliet Catholic. -Oliver Gibson played for my archrival high school and was a year ahead of me.-I sat next to Alan Henderson (currently with the Cavaliers) sometimes in a freshman seminar at IU. -I had season football tickets every year at IU so I got to see Trent Green, Vaughn Dunbar, Antwaan Randle El, and Courtney Roby (among others) play in college...not to mention all the future pros who played against IU!-My dad taught Tom Thayer, Terry Gannon, and Jerry Hairston Jr when they were freshmen. I'm not sure if he taught these two or just knows them, but Chris Brown and Justin McCareins also went to the school where he now teaches.

Played baseball against Favre (played for Picayune Memorial High School) - yeah he struck me out. in my only appearance against him. I was a soph and he was a senior.

Also played baseball with Kevin Smith, former CB for the Cowboys. Moved to Orange, TX my junior year and Smith was a senior. He was a 4-sport athlete. Not very good at baseball, but dominated at football, track and was a very good basketball player.

Mud out
The Golden Triangle is a hotbed of pro talent ...

I played HS football with AZ, Al Zemaitis of Penn State. He'll be a pro soon. Everyone knew he'd end up in the NFL. Funny thing is he never played CB. He was mostly a RB, and a damn good one...played some saftety too. I still see him around here sometimes, Spencerport NY. He's a good kid (I call him kid like I'm way older, even though I only graduated a year ahead, ha).

I played soccer in HS with Scott Norwood (infamous SB goat for Buff) at Thomas Jefferson HS in VA. I used to see him at the HS after he was cut kicking FG after FG. He kind of just faded away....

I was not much of a HS jock ... closest I have come is playing b-ball with some lower level D1 players in law school ...I did once sue the Ram's 5th string tailback on behalf of a bank to collect on an auto loan for a Mercedes ...And I have a few MLB players as neighbors ... :nerd:

In high school I played with Steve Bush (Bengals, Cards, 9ers) and against a former KC Dlineman. My FF buddy in Seattle sacked both Huards in high school. And my other FF buddy and his cousins fought Phil Simms and some others in a brawl in Kentucky.

Went to football camp with Derrick Mayes, former Notre Dame, Green Bay, and Seattle wideout. He was on a skeleton squad made up of Indy's best high school skill players. The only other notable was Chris Dittoe, who went on to start at QB for IU.I also got to meet Cory Harris, who played safety for the Super Bowl Champion Baltimore Ravens. He graduted from my high school in 1988(I believe) and went Vanderbilt, set some school records, and was drafted in '92 by the Packers. He showed up to talk to the seniors about college and whatever. He was very predisposed with showing off his new sports car and bling bling. His signing bonus was like $300,000. Not much by 1992 standards.

I played baseball at UNM in Albuquerque. Some of the guys I played with went pro and one or two of them made it to the show but didn't do much. Played against "Bump" Wills (Maury's son) and a bunch of other pro's kids in the WAC.Biggest thrill was playing the Dukes (LA Triple AAA team) in our annual spring exhibition game. That was when Lasorda was the coach. Played against guys like Cey, Ferguson and Lopes. Good times... a long time ago......

I played hs football in rural Colorado/Wyoming so any of us were lucky to have a trade school look at us. However, I did play against J'nee Jackson from Guernsey. I blocked his shot when I was a senior and he was a freshmen. He was a hot shot cb/kr at the U of Wyoming (fumbled a punt when Wyo had the lead against NE-leading to a cornhusker td). He went on to play with the Colts in training camp. Was injured and received a camp settlement.

Played HS B-Ball with Tony Gonzalez. I was one year older. I still have footage of him riding the pine as a freshman. Shortly after, he returned for his sophmore season with about 30 pounds of added muscle and a newfound ability to jump out of the gym. Dude was good, but not great. He kind of blended in on a team that sent 6 guys on scholarships. We played in some pretty big tournaments against guys like Stackhouse and McCinnis when they were at Oak Hill. Stackhouse was a FREAK! Our first glimpse of him was an alley-oop reverse dunk. In HS, we had not seen a lot of those in game situations. Dude made it look effortless and pretty.

I used to coach LL baseball. Went up to the field one day to do some grounds maintenance. Some kids (early teens) showed up later to play football in the field next door. I went over to see if I could jump in. I figured I would own these kids. Not quite. One kid continuously owned me. I couldn't lay a hand on him. He turned out to be a decent player. That's as close as i came to playing with a future star. A sandlot game against Ronald Curry.

In High School in SC, I played with Jeff Burris, former CB for the Bills and Bengals. I played against Stephen Davis once...i was a third string LB, and I was only in for a few plays as an injury substitution...he literally ran over me when I tried to tackle him. :bag:

I played against LeBron in basketball in AAU in the 8th grade and then in a tournament our sophomore years of high school. He was a man. The most amazing thing about him was his size. He was big and strong enough to play in the NBA when he was in 8th grade.

Not a huge name but I played with Craig Hentrich in Highschool. Marquette Explorers baby. He set the state record for longest field goal and went on to Notre Dame. He's a punter for Tenn. now and makes more money than I'll ever see. What a job eh?

Played with and blocked by Kevin Mawae. He was skinny in H.S. 6'3"ish 220 lbs. Went to LSU and they slapped 70 lbs on him. Nice guy.And played with a RB (cup of coffee with the Bills) Eddie Fuller.

I'll chime in....I played highschool football with TE Dan Campbell (current Cowboy former Giant)....the guy played RB half his senior year, and to see him now as a 260+ lb TE makes me laugh. It was a small school and at the class reunion he still remebered my name which was cool.I also played baseball against Sott Posednik (current whitesox). He pitched a no-hitter against us (striking me out twice) and he hit a grand slam in the same game.

I played on the same baseball team as David Carr, we were both pitchers so we spent a lot of time together. He's a really good guy. I saw him in town a couple years out of high school and we talked for a bit, he seemed much bigger at that time than in high school.

I got to play against Tracy McGrady in little league all star baseball (got a couple hits aginst him as well), play against Freddie Mitchell in baseball and football in HS and saw Paul Edinger kick the crap out of the ball in HS. Myself and Freddie would have contests to see who could make the better catch in the outfield in baseball. I did, however, out do him in receptions my senior year in high school.

I played against Reggie Bush and caught him from behind easily to make a tackle.Oh yea, and made him fumble on the play.

Played HS ball against the following:Robert HolcombeMike BrownJoe Germaine

Highly doubtful.10th grade? I might buy it. But not the 8th grade.

I grew up in Kernersville NC, right outside of Winston Salem, Greensboro, and High Point.Quite a little hot bed of athletic talent. When I was very young, I played on the same youth basketball team as Rusty LaRue. Rusty went on to college at Wake forest, as did I, and was the starting QB for the football team and shooting guard for the basketball team. He even played one year of baseball. Wake was a passing team under then head coach Jim Caldwell, now with the Colts, and Rusty actually set a couple NCAA passing records. Later, he played pro basketball and actually won a Championship Ring with the Bulls when Michael and Scotty were there. Also played with Utah and Golden State as well as various other non NBA pro leagues. Kid could shoot from 40 feet. Also, in Little league baseball, my senior League team (13-15) I played with Ray Farmer who went on to play college ball at Duke. He was an AllAMerican at Safety for the football team and was drafted in like the 2nd or 3rd Round by the Eagles and played some good LBer for them before blowing out his knee. Was also drafted by the Seattle Mariners. Played baseball at Duke and was leading the league in homeruns at one pont. In Little League, he'd steal bases skipping. He'd also walk up to you and smack you on the chest while laughing and chirping, "Tweet, Tweet." Hell of a nice kid and real smart. As a Senior League All Star, he and a team with Rusty on it went to the Little League World series.Kernersville also had a 12 year old team a few years ago that was a base hit away, needed a hit with 2 outs in the 6th, from going to the Little League World Series.Another guy from my high school, Bryan Heath, went on to play college ball at UVA and was given a free agent tryout with the Seahawks. There was another guy from that team who also got a tryout but can't remember his name.My brother won three state championships in Little League baseball. He was a catcher. That squad had two ace pitchers. One, Greg Payne, was a kicker at Catawba and was invited to the NFL Scouting Combine. He said he nailed 4 of 5 kicks from 50 yards out and nobody talked to him. He then kicked for a couple years in the Arena League for the Greensboro Cobras? then quit. One of the years my brother and his baseball squad went far into the playoffs, they played against a team that had a guy named Trot Nixon. Who is currently playing Right Field for the Red Sox. My brothers team then lost of course.Kernersville has produced numerous minor league baseball players. My brother caught a guy named Joe Lagarde in high school and American Legion who went all the way to Triple A with the Dodgers, Albequerque? Kid had more natural, innate talent than you could shake a stick at. Was also the QB for the football team and we won the state championship the year after I graduated. He was named All State. His WORST sport was basketball and he won the MVP Award of the Conference Tournament. Long story short, you really couldn't tell Joe what to do. He wasn't rebellious or angry, he just didn't see what he was doing was wrong. An inner city kid who it really broke your heart. Basically, with a 95 MPH fastball (my brother took multiple Advils after every game) and unreal athletic instincts, he WAS going to be a Dodger, but, he couldn't leave the weed alone and the Dodgers quit giving him chances to get his act together. He probably missed out on several millions of dollars. We had another kid my brother played with that went to Triple A. He was a late draft pick but listen to his story. Outfielder. Throws right, bats left. Led Triple A team in batting and makes League All Star team. Average big league speed. Next year, club brings up a Bonus Baby (high draft pick) and they sit Chad. Bonus Baby sticks at the Mendoza Line all season. Chad realizes that he wasn't 1. a high enough pick with a substantial amount of money invested in him or 2. a chick who could blow a GM. He quit the next season. Stupid? Maybe. But you lead your Triple A team in batting and make the All Star team and then you get benched? That's tough to accept.Lastly, a few tales from my days at Wake. Sat next to Rodney Rogers, 10+ years NBAer, during Opening Convocation my Freshman Year. Had an Upper Level Psych class (required for major) with Tim Duncan and sat next to him in class one day. (He's very tall.) Was a big party guy in school and our Power Forward, Sean Allen, (6-8), would come over to our apartment, drink beer, do bong hits, and watch the Simpsons. I'm sure he played some Lower Level Pro ball. Also had a Buddhism class with Trelonnie Owens during summer school, which he missed aboyt 2/3 of because as our professor told us, he was interviewing for jobs, i.e., trying out for teams. (Think he might have gotten a look from the Bulls). Wake has only 3500 students so that I brushed elbows with all these guys is not improbable. I also graduated with Muggsy Bogues (finished his degree after NBA career) and (Sportscenter) TiiiiiiiimmmmmmEEEEEEEE :nerd: !!!!!!!!!!!

Played football with Charlie Batch, current Pittsburgh Steeler back-up QB and former Detroit Lion QB and 2nd round pick, from the time we were about 9 years old until we graduated from high school. He was very good, but I didn't think he was NFL material. Some may still question if he is. He got a lot bigger while he spent 6 years in college. Nice guy though.Played football against Ty Law in grade school.
