I have a bet with another person in my leauge.

Has anyone ever been in a leauge where the highest scoring team in the league did NOT make the playoffs? This is assuming, of course, you're in a head-to-head league.

TIA.

I play in 2 locals (both long-established leagues -- 10+ years each), and it has happened once in each of those.edit to add: one team was 7-7, finished 3rd (a 12 team league with 3 divisions of 4 teams each, division winners and one wild card make playoffs); the other team was 6-6-1, finished 7th (a 12 team league, all teams in one conference, top 6 make playoffs).

I voted no but I am in a position to possibly do it in 2 leagues this year so I may have to change my vote in a month.

Once, about 6 or 7 years ago. Guy had the worst luck you've ever seen.

Things balance out though: the next year he won it all with a mediocre team that caught fire at the right time.

I've seen it happen in a few leagues I took part in. When setting up league rules for my dynasty league, we set it up so that 2 wins or losses are awarded each week: head-to-head, and a second W or L for being in the top half or bottom half of the league in scoring.

This was an attempt to eliminate the possibility that this could happen, yet still keep the rivalry atmosphere that head-to-head leagues provide. out of 12 teams, 4 make the playoffs - three division winners and a wild-card - the next best record.

To date (since 2000) we've not had the top scoring team miss the playoffs, but a few posters mentioned that they reserve the last spot for the next-highest point-getter (as opposed to next-highest record). I like that idea, and may propose it in the future.

Happened to me a few years ago.

My team was too inconsistent. Put up a HUGE number and lose the highest scoring team of that week.

...the games I won were complete blowouts.

...then the rest of the time I didn't even break 100.

It made me give more value to consistent players & luck.

I have seen that and as well the total reverse, some guy who was last in the league in scoring where he managed to get everyone's worst. Actually even won a game or two in the playoffs before getting destroyed.

Every league I have ever done has highest points as a playoff spot. I have been high point guy and not made it in on record. 12 team league 4 playoff spots.

Yes.That team was me.While the $$ bonus for highest point total was nice, it definately sucked to have produced that well and be on the outside looking in. Was my first time not making the playoffs (6 of 12 make it). However, it got WORSE.Not only did I lead the league in points, but I had the best record of ANY team if you played every team, every week. In that league, I had the second highest points scored in the history of the league one week. My opponent had the highest in the history of the league. Was one of those years.

I had a guy make the playoffs with the 6th seed and lose round 1, he outscored the entire league by over 200 points. He also had a 210pt week. Highest since has been 165.

Three years back I was in a 10 team league which had 8 playoff spots. There was a four way tie for the 6,7,8 and 9 spots, with the first tiebreaker being head-to-head matchups. The team with the most points scored on the season managed to finish 9th per the tiebreaker and missed the playoffs. After the commish sent a note explaining the breakdown, the owner sent a broadcast email to the league, saying only:

"#### Fantasy Football!"

I saw a team last year that faced the lowest scorer in 7 of the first 8 weeks... and the second-lowest scorer in the other week. Sometimes, you see some really, really crazy splits.

Im on my way... Things were going great, now Im ####ting bricks, because no matter who I play, I get busted upside the chops.

I don't think this is a :lmao: issue at all. If you have the most points but don't even make the playoffs, something is wrong. Then it's just the "luck of the schedule" game, and I don't think that's better than playing fantasy football. It's bad enough that you can take just about any playoff team, play with the schedule, and keep them out of the post-season. But to keep the league's best team out of the playoffs? That's absurd.

Every league should have something in its rules where the top point-getter makes the playoffs as a wild-card. This isn't real football; it's fantasy football. The best team should always make the playoffs.

It happened to me 4 or 5 years ago. 12-team league where only 4 made the playoffs. I had a terrific team but bad luck on the schedule kept me out. I think I was 9-5 and lost a tiebreaker. We have since gone to 6 team playoffs.

In my 12-team keeper league the next year the highest scoring team thru the end of the regular season didn't get in, and 6 teams made the playoffs in that league. Ouch! That team was incredibly inconsistent, basically lost all the games where they didn't do very well plus lost a couple of the other games where they blew up. By the end of the playoffs this was no longer the highest scroring team. (Thankfully this was not my team.)

in my 10 team keeper, i have a 25% edge in point over the next closest team. my 4-5 record would keep me out of the playoffs if they started today. had i played against one particular division opponent every week this year, i would be 7-2. of course, i've only played him the 2 weeks in which he outscored me.

:football:

In the SAME SEASON I was the highest scorer in 3 leagues and missed the playoffs in all of them. I don't think it's all that uncommon.

I find it funny when people complain when H2H record determines who makes the playoffs in a H2H league.

I agree that it'sa flaw of h2h in general, which is why I prefer total points. But there is some fun assocaited with h2h, so it would be nice to not sacrifice everything to "luck of the schedule" to play it. Providing a playoff spot for the top point-getter (or using Power Ranking, like CBS has) is a good alternative imo.

In one of my leagues we award a win/loss for the top 5/low 5 scoring teams each week. This week I lost 111-109, and we were the top 2 scoring teams this week. So, the SOB who pulled off the crap with Holmes last night is 2-0 for the week, whereas I am 1-1.

It is a great system, really evens things out.

I run a 16 team league and have the most points in the league.

Currently I stand a 4-5 and 2 games out of the playoffs.

In my other 16 team league FBG's own Aaron Rudnicki is also the highest scoring team at 4-5 and 2 games out of the playoffs as of right now

But does the highest scoring team really = the "best" team ? In both instances where its occurred in the leagues I play in, those teams were wildly inconsistent. We reward the top points team monetarily, but to make the playoffs, you have to get there on your record. Just my

2/3 ratio of yes/no. I am surprised by this, but I guess it is possible. I've just never seen it. In the two leagues I play in (both 12 team leagues), one takes the top 8, and the other takes 3 division winners and a Power Points wildcard. If you are the top scoring team, the odds are pretty good you'll finish top 8... and highly probable that you're in the Power Points discussion.

So my takeaway here is this... there is more luck to this than I'm willing to admit.

I play in a 12 man league on MFL where we use doubleheaders where 2 victory points is awarded for each win.

In addition the top 4 scorers each week get 4 victory points, the middle 4 get 2 victory points and the bottom 4 get zero victory points.

The most victory points you can earn in a week is 8.

This is the most fair way I have seen the H2H "shaft" factor minimized.

In one of my other leagues which has 10 owners, I am the highest scorer and I sit at 4-5, at this point not making the playoffs.

I'm in a 12 team league. Currently I have the most points by a HUGE margin and am 6-3. Regarding all 3 of my losses: If I would've played the team that I lost to all 9 weeks I would've been 8-1 against each team. The 1 week I could've lost to them I played them. And it wasn't like I put up no points in those weeks. I ended up like 2nd and 3rd high for points each time. Needless to say I'm pretty peeved about it.

I'm still leading my division but am tied w/ someone who has hundreds of points less than I do.

Not that I can remember, BUT it is likely to happen this year.

With 4 weeks to go, the points leader is 4-6 and 72pts ahead of the next highest total. This team is tied for last in their division, trailing a 9-1 and 8-2 team (3rd and 6th in points respectively)! So, essentially this team is done as there is only one wild card. Worst luck I've ever seen....team is remarkably consistent scoring, only under 114pts once, which is insane in our league.

Two years ago I finished as the top scoring team by over 100 points (fairly standard scoring), but finished fifth in a ten-team league where four teams make the playoffs.

Had LT, Palmer, CJ, Steven Jackson, etc. Just bad luck, what can you do.

I've done it once in my previous 4 leagues. And have a very good chance of doing it again this year. Only one other team has scored more points than have been scored against me. I'm really beginning to hate head to head.
