Redskins hire Haslett as defensive coordinator

(Updated at 9:45 p.m.)

Jim Haslett and the Redskins struck a deal Tuesday night that makes Haslett the team's new defensive coordinator and means the Redskins will have a markedly different defensive philosophy going forward.

Haslett was in Ashburn on Monday, and a league source told the Post's Mark Maske that the two sides struck a deal Tuesday night. The agreement means that Mike Shanahan has now lined up both of his coordinators. His son, Kyle Shanahan, is leaving his position as offensive coordinator in Houston and is expected in Ashburn next week.

Haslett was also a candidate for the Giants' defensive coordinator opening, and reportedly was due in New York for an interview on Wednesday.

The Redskins also considered secondary coach Jerry Gray, who also interviewed for head coach Jim Zorn's job. It's widely believed their first target was Cincinnati's Mike Zimmer, who signed a three-year contract extension with the Bengals today.

Haslett replaces Greg Blache, the Redskins' defensive coordinator the past two seasons who is expected to retire.

Haslett brings an impressive resume to his new position, having previously served as head coach in New Orleans from 2000-05 and as interim coach in St. Louis in 2008. Last season, he coached the Florida franchise in the UFL's inaugural season. He's also served as defensive coordinator in St. Louis, New Orleans and Pittsburgh. He has a reputation for using aggressive defenses and found success with the Steelers using the 3-4 defense, a formation that Shanahan has explored using.

Haslett inherits a defense that was ranked fourth in the NFL in 2008 and 10th in league last season and has considerable personnel returning. Players such as Brian Orakpo, Andre Carter and Albert Haynesworth could give him the flexibility to install a 3-4 defense. The pass defense was ranked No. 8 in the league last year and the Redskins posted 40 sacks, which also ranked them eighth.

Blache had used a similar system as his predecessor, Gregg Williams, though he took a more conservative approach because of personnel, prompting public complaints from Haynesworth, who was upset with how he was being used.

With Haslett now wearing a Washington headset, it's widely believed a more aggressive attack could be on the horizon

Williams lite? Good hire.

Funny how everybody underachieves in DC, tho... In perpetuity.

Can he coach up Jason Campbell or miraculously swap him for Rodgers, Brees, favre, VY, romo??? Then it's like spitting into the wind...

Lol, they could probly get carson palmer or leinart, tho...

Or Wuerrfel Jr (sorry T bo!)

i never really knew Haslett for good defenses. the Saints defense wasn't exactly stellar when he was HC there, right? And the Rams defense? How long was he with the Steelers defense?

i'm a bit surprised by this hire.

Meh. His defenses always seemed to be rather mediocre.

DC = Defensive CoordinatorHTH

yuck. Andre Carter hated the 3-4 in SF and his numbers prove it. Now he's back in one. Haynesworth will be the most overpaid 3-4 DE in history and just used to take up double teams on one side of the field. Overall I like the 3-4, but not with the players the Skins have. Orakpo should excel as a 3-4 rush backer though. Chris Wilson should do well too. Wonder if Jarmon can play a 3-4 DE?

Haslett has been a 4-3 guy. He seems like a guy who will work with the personnel.

I like the move. I'm a big fan of hiring failed coaches on as OCs or DCs. Mike Nolan, Marty Morninwheg, **** Lebeau, Buddy Ryan, history is littered with TERRIBLE coaches who were phenomenal coordinators.

This is what happens when you give unlimited texting to 13 year olds.

This.I can honestly deal with Andre Carter having to go back to a 3-4...good or bad. I think Orakpo would be phenominal in a 3-4...but the bullet I can't bite is the 100 million dollar cork of a DT that Haynesworth would become. That would be the biggest waste of money. You don't need to be good to play nose in a 3-4...you just need to be fat and strong and able to not move. That kind of guy doesn't cost what we're paying him. I guess I never thought about what would happen if you moved him to an end in a 3-4, and got a beasty to play NT, but I don't know if that would work either honestly.Re. the Haslett signing...I'm in the camp of  about his ability as I never thought of him as a defensive guy either.

I never saw Haslett as a particularly good defensive coach.

And there's no indication at all that he will run a 3-4 defense in Washington.

I think Hasslett will be a good hire if:

1) He installs a 4-3 defense, not this 3-4 nonsense.

and

2) Uses Haynesworth properly, which isn't too difficult to figure out.

Like others, I'm a big fan of hiring failed head coaches as coordinators.

Also, Hasslett's blitz packages are going to be a significant improvement over Blache's.

Were there any WORSE blitz packages in the NFL than Blache's? I swear, they only blitzed to enable the secondary to get burned straight out rather than have to go to the trouble of biting on a double move.I think I like it, but like posted above, Skins don't have personnel for a 3-4 set. They need a real Strong Side Linebacker and put Orakpo at end.

Doesn't this theory demand that the failed HC was a phenomenal coordinator to begin with which begs the question, do you think Haslett was a phenomenal DC??

use Landry more as a blitzing LB, let Fat Albert play wherever he wants, and let Orakpo play DE and our D will instantly be better.

It's a good hire if they stick with the 4-3. If they go 3-4 I will laugh my #### (donkey) off.
