Have 3 rookie Head Coaches made the playoffs in the same year before? (1 Viewer)

Baltimore, Miami, and Atlanta all in playoffs with rookie Head Coaches.

Amazing if you ask me. Even more amazing is the fact that Baltimore was 5-11 last year, Atlanta was 4-12, and Miami was 1-15 last year. Wow.

I was thinking quite a few rookie coaches made it in 1992 - Bobby Roos in SD, Bill Cowher in Pit, Denny Green in Min...

I get what you're saying and I agree, but don't most rookie coaches take over bad teams? :fishy: I'd love to say this bodes well for Detroit...

Heh, yeah :lmao: Btw, I think today should earn Sparano Coach of the Year Honors. Turned a 1-15 team with an old, recycled QB in his 1st year into an 11-5 team that won one of the tougher divisions in the league.

I wouldn't disagree with that, but I think too many people will look at Parcells' architecture and Cam's incompetence as heavy factors in those outcomes.

True, but where were the Fins projected at the start of the year? I doubt anyone picked them to win, probably not even to finish 3rd.

I agree, but that doesn't discount what might be thought of Parcells and Cameron in the least.

 what else could Sporano have done? He wasn't going to go undefeated.

Probably nothing. Even if they did go undefeated, people will remember that the Dolphins weren't far removed from a winning season until Saban started dreaming of returning to the college game, that Cameron couldn't have been much worse as a head coach, and that Parcells has a reputation for rebuilding teams. It's not a knock against Sporano at all, just the situation he found himself in. I doubt if he will spend too much time pouting if someone else wins it.

You're making it sound as if Sparano walked into an ideal situation. Even with what you're saying about Cameron and Parcells, this was Parcells' 1st year with the team (only in charge a few months). As good as Parcells is and as bad as Cameron was, the situation Sparano took over was horrible and that's putting it nicely. The Dolphins just pulled off a +10 win differential. Has that happened before? If it has, it hasn't been often. They brought in Pennington as their QB. They had Ronnie coming off an ACL injury. They traded away Jason Taylor. They traded away Chambers at the end of last year. And despite all of that, they've won the AFC East with an 11-5 record over the NE Patriots and the NYJ, both of which have had very good years. There's a very good chance Sparano won't win the award and I understand that. But to paint the picture that his situation wasn't THAT bad is ridiculous, IMO. It was terrible.

I'm not saying anything of the kind. Sparano has done a very good job, but he's not the only guy who has done a good job this year. I'm just pointing out the reasons why it's completely reasonable if someone else wins the award. None of these guys are coaching in a bubble, and I doubt that anyone voting will just look at win differential and say well, that's the only thing I'm going to consider" and give him the award. I also wouldn't consider bringing in Pennington or Ronnie getting healthy as one of the obstacles that Sparano had to overcome.BTW, it has happened before. Check out the 1999 Colts.
