HBO Hard Knocks 2014: Atlanta Falcons (1 Viewer)

My thoughts from last night,

-Dimitrov is the biggest cheese dik GM in the league. People think he is some kind of guru because the team traded up for Julio. You can tell he LOVES being on camera and the attention.
He sure seems to love the attention. He is unbelievably annoying and I find it hard to believe anyone on that staff actually likes him. On the other hand Smith seems like a good guy, but boy does it come off forced when he swears and tries to act tough.

Guess I can't complain about it not being on HBOgo until the day after, when last year the episodes weren't on HBOgo at all!

Will be watching tonight. I found the first episode fairly boring, too much pre-camp family crap, I guess aiming at the real housewives of Atlanta audience. That, plus fighting and extended Sjax 'leadership' speeches were my main takeaways from Ep. 1.

Same thoughts as you. Thought the episode was sub-par. Plus, a lot of the personalities on the Falcons just seem... boring. Needs more Roddy White, heh.

WHats the deal with Mike Smith telling everyone not to get into a fight and then commending the guy in his post game speech? It seems like he cant make up his mind

I thought the same thing, very odd.
I think he was addressing the specific situation that if one of your guys is getting pushed around, he is not going to be upset if you come to his support. In the first episode Arthur Blank was upset in last years playoff game that Ryan was hit when he slid and the team didn't come get his back.

The Haggeman situation he also said be smart, don't hit a guy that has a helmet on.

He may be toeing the line, but I understood what he meant and didn't think it was contradicting.

There's some strange editing going on too. Hageman hurting his hand was from August 2nd before some of the footage from last weeks episode. It was odd for them to pull that back in.

It's more of a soap opera than it is a show for football enthusiasts. They didn't have enough interesting content because there's nobody exciting on the team so they went digging up old footage. It's not a knock on the Falcons, it's just a knock on them choosing the Falcons.

God I would have loved it if they did the Browns or the Vikings or a team with some exciting rookies and/or position battles.

The Falcons have a great story, but when you look at the individuals themselves, they just aren't that interesting. It's still good TV, but certainly is the weakest season yet.

I think he kicked the guy out of practice to back up the threat, then watched the tape and realized he was actually stepping up to get a teammates back. That kind of thing can be a good thing in games, you just don't want broken hands and #### in practice.

What was that Tice muttered when Smith said "this will be a good play of the protection holds up"?
Rewound it to hear again and I still think he said "###### play". What did you hear?
"itll hold up"
The "it'll hold up" comment was obvious. Bigboy is referring to the inaudible comment Tice uttered a few seconds later. I listened to it five times and came up empty. He probably just grunted while thinking of hot dogs.

I thought he was asking what the play was.

I found Ricardo Allen's shirt while on the zip line to be particularly disturbing. The jorts didn't help things either...

There isn't anything interesting about this team.

The Mr. "I. Will. Not. Be. Pushed. Around." tough guy mantra couldn't feel more forced.

Really, Coach? Nice Tevas. Can't wait to lay it on the line for you. Yeah, right.

Roddy seems like an awesome dude. Guys like that help to make camp a little more bearable.
Reposting this:

Here are some of the types of comments from Roddy White's twitter that we may have to look forward to:

"All them jurors should go home tonight and kill themselves for letting a grown man get away with killing a kid"

"Watching NFL countdown and they talking bad about Aldon Smith but I'm willing to bet Keyshawn Tom and cris have all driven drunk no doubt"

"Aldon smith isn't right in any way form or fashion but come on guys don't act like you never [drove drunk] you just got away with it"

"A lot of stuff get swept under the rug at university's don't understand why penn state had to tell the media we got a coach rapping kids"

"You know that's gone hurt the university you can't control a grown man I just think they should've got him arrested and that's the end"

"I would send my kid there if he wanted to go he wasn't rappin football players that's a great program that joe pa ran"

NFL players don't sound very bright......or their Coaches with the exception of the Head Coach and Management

I bet if you let a little mouse loose in that ATL locker room.... you'd see a bunch of grown ### men tap dancing scared!

This season flat out sucks. In fact I fond myself reading this forum while it plays LOL. I'll tell you what, I don't think this team is gonna rebound all that much. I'm lower my projections on them all ;-)

The comment to Roddy White from Matt Ryan regarding how he'll be playing out of the slot like Tony used to was interesting. Rankings updated.

I thought it was weird when Ryan went into the WR's positional meeting to correct a miscommunication from practice, and not a single WR said....anything. Including whoever he was talking to.

And it sounded like they were laughing after he walked out

Yeah I feel like this team just has no chemistry, especially on offense. One of the top teams as far as talent goes on offense, but I think it's getting pretty clear why they never go anywhere. Matt Ryan is a good talent but he doesn't appear to be a leader at all. The meeting you pointed out was a clear sign of him trying to be a good leader, but the lack of response or anything from the WR's seemed to say a lot. Some people are just natural leaders and some aren't and it appears that Matt Ryan isn't. I think that's what is holding the offense back and will keep them from ever being great.

The chemistry seemed fine 2 years ago when Julio and Roddy weren't injured all year.

Roddy: 92 1351 7

Julio: 79 1198 10

Ryan: 4719 32 and 14

They were fantasy giants. I wouldn't read too much into a 10 second clip HBO showed.

Not for nothing, but you think some editing might be involved...I mean you think Ryan went over two plays in 20 seconds? I'm pretty sure, the play they showed while Ryan is talking to Harry Douglas didn't even have Douglas in it.

Yeah, not sure how you're extracting anything from that clip, they cut to a different scene when he walks out. I don't really get the complaining...to be fair I never saw the supposed glory days of Hard Knocks, started tuning in during the 2011 season...but getting any glimpse into any NFL team is pretty great, even if it's a relatively boring one. And it's not like we're being hit over the head with great television at this time of the year.

I first want to say that I agree, no matter how boring, it's great to get a look into NFL locker rooms, FO meetings, coaching meetings, etc.

But even just looking at last year, the Bengals were more interesting and compelling in nearly every single way.

I actually got a laugh out of that scene...it was almost as if Ryan realized right after the words left his mouth that he was on camera and went with the "no offense, Tony"

I will say - it made me buy a bucket hat. Those things will rock for the beach and my old one is beat up

I don't think Roddy White comes off good at all in this. Having a sense of humor is one thing but it's like all he does is clown around. Tough to imagine a jerry rice or Larry fitzgerald doing stuff like that in camp. I realize we're only seeing a few edited moments and he's a talented player but he doesn't come off like a "winner" to me. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_hOxnGEGgMY

Jerry Rice never enjoyed the game while he was playing. You only go around once. Roddy White is living the dream right now. More power to him.

Only saw the first episode, but Mike Smith doesn't seem like much of a coach. Obviously I don't know about the X's and O's, but he really doesn't seem to be much of a motivator.

Oh, and the sandals. I realize it's asinine but it just screams WEAK to me....

Is it just my imagination or is there a weird hesitancy every time Mike Smith curses? Almost like he has to force it for the cameras or wants to hold back and then doesn't, not sure.

I think I'd watch this show about pretty much any team though, I just think they do a nice job of making it compelling. Agree that Falcons were a far from ideal choice though.

I don't get why every episode has to be "DRAMATIC" for this to be good tv. What are y'all a bunch of housewives? Go watch The Bachelor if you want drama.

I'm a fan of football, and I love this show.

Jerry's got three rings. I can't imagine him running onto the field a clowning around with a d-back like that in practice. Roddy is a veteran, young guys look up to him. If they see him doing nothing but goofing like that what message does it send to the rest of the guys? It doesn't always have to be serious out there but some times it does. I think he has it easy under Mike Smith, let's him get away with it.

This is so stupid. We saw like 5 minutes total of Roddy on the practice field. He's out there for hours every single day.

this thread is terrible.

I don't think it has to be dramatic, just interesting. Compared to past seasons you have to admit there is something lacking. The coaches and players just aren't as engaging as in the past. It's still a great show and plenty of time left to pick things up.

I realize that and noted it in my first post. Still, from what little we have seen he comes off as a guy who likes to clown around and giggle a lot on the practice field.
