re: the reintroduction of Gregor...

so much of the horror of The Mountain was explained to the reader via second-hand stories and tall tales of his brutal ways. I'm trying to recall if we ever get an up close and personal account of his terrible acts, and I'm drawing a blank on that one.
just horse beheading?
yep, good call. Way back in season 1.
Also the atrocities he committed on that Village, Remember when Ned sent out Beric Dondarrion to go bring him to justice(then The Mountain "killed" Beric for the first time). Plus his association with The Tickler etc. and all the torture.
were those firsthand scenes though, or did we find out about them through other characters?I don't remember seeing the mountain after the tourney, but we must have since he has been played by 3 different dudes now.
He was in Harrenhal in Season Two. When Arya was put in the pen with Gendry one of the prisoners insisted that if you looked The Mountain in the eye when he came to pick someone...he wouldn't pick you. Naturally, what do you think happened to that jabroni?

I think that's my favorite episode of the season so far.

It's interesting the direction they went with Rorge/Biter not just in the likely immediate impetus it'll have on the Hound/Arya split, but it also means they won't be there to attack Brienne later. I wonder if they'll just skip that part of the story. That was a pretty brutal scene in the books.
It probably means they'll cliffhang this year with Brienne being captured by Cat Stark.

Interesting... from an old blog/journal entry where GRRM was doing an online reading via Second Life:

Well, I made my appearance on Sheep Island a few hours ago, cleverly disguised as Tyrion the Imp for a reading and Q&A session at Bantam’s virtual bookstore. Only this version of Tyrion could fly! Ah, if only the Tyrion in the books could fly, what mischief he will… ah… could… ah, never mind.
Dany, Tyrion and Jon as the three dragons?

Even if it's somewhat telegraphed it'd still be a great twist if Tyrion ended up being a Targeryan and ends up wiping out the Lannisters. I mean, he's already taken his mom and Tywin out. The new dynamic between him and Jamie would be powerful stuff too. I don't know how Martin would explain away Varys not knowing about it or at least acting so blatantly ignorant of it all this time.

Maybe there's something more important that being Targaryan when it comes to dragon relations? Wasn't that guy from Dorne who locked himself in the room with the dragons part Targ? That didn't seem to work out for him.

I don't know if you all have read the released Winds of Winter chapters, but one of Tyrion's has what some consider foreshadowing on the dragon front.

I think the loose constraint is you have to not burn (which you would think would rule out Jon Snow) and if you want to be in the Regal threesome you need some Targ blood in you from somewhere. Not all Targs are fireproof, it seemed like it's a somewhat rare thing actually which speaks to your true regal destiny. Obviously the later Targs didn't really have a chance to get tested in that way. I.e. being in the Targ bloodline is necessary but not sufficient to be "a dragon"(see Visaerys) - you also have to not burn, which so far has been presented as a Targ only trait.

Right, but Tyrion is a smart dude. I don't think it'd be particularly difficult to craft some narrative under which he figures out how to tame the dragons without actually having a royal bloodline.

That would be an interesting story line. Here's hoping he somehow finds those books about dragons.

IMO, this has bee foreshadowed quite a bit. Tyrion as the dragon lore guy, ect.

No coincidence Martin had Tyrion take a trip to the wall, too, IMO. Oh, and bond with John Snow.

The tea leaves are there.

Can someone clear up for me something from a few episodes ago. There was a bit between Tywin & Cersei about no gold being mined in the last few years. Was Tywin talking about Casterly Rock's mines or the mines belonging to the crown/Westoros?

“The boy absorbed that all in silence. He had the Stark face if not the name: long, solemn, guarded, a face that gave nothing away. Whoever his mother had been, she had left little of herself in her son. “What are you reading about?” he asked.

“Dragons,” Tyrion told him.

“What good is that? There are no more dragons,” the boy said with the easy certainty of youth.

“So they say,” Tyrion replied. “Sad, isn’t it? When I was your age, I used to dream of having a dragon of my own.”

“You did?” the boy said suspiciously. Perhaps he thought Tyrion was making fun of him.

“Oh, yes. Even a stunted, twisted, ugly little boy can look down over the world when he’s seated on a dragon’s back.” Tyrion pushed the bearskin aside and climbed to his feet. “I used to start fires in the bowels of Casterly Rock and stare at the flames for hours, pretending they were dragonfire. Sometimes I’d imagine my father burning. At other times, my sister.” Jon Snow was staring at him, a look equal parts horror and fascination. Tyrion guffawed. “Don’t look at me that way, *******. I know your secret. You’ve dreamt the same kind of dreams.”

By the end of this season, it looks like they will be at the end of the Bran and Sansa storylines.

Bran based on the episode titles, Sansa is already there.

Bran might meet a child who likely takes the place of cold hands as their guide perhaps. There are still things for bran to do from the books.

Gotta link? I downloaded he app but it wants me to pay for stuff before I get to the new Tyrion chapter.

Also bumpity for Sunday's The Mountan and the Viper episode :moneybag:

We don't know for sure that The Mountain will kill Oberyn on TV either. Probably, but not certainly, right?

Hope it goes down like in the novel, pretty bittersweet/tragic death for Obie: he knows The Mountain is poisoned, but gets taken out himself (pretty brutally) before he gets to enjoy his revenge.
this part pissed me off when reading. Only a few other scenes created same kind of reaction.
Same here. When Ned was executed, I wasn't convinced he was dead until it was confirmed in another chapter. I'm still not convinced Jon Snow is dead. But when Oberyn was pulverized to death, I knew it, & felt like GRRM had just gut punched me. Fantastic writing to generate a storyline like that, only make it hurt that badly for the reader.

Hope it's an episode-long event, & really hits the viewers like it did to the readers. People won't be shocked like they were during the Red Wedding, but I think it'll hurt a lot more if they let Oberyn sell the revenge/rage/heartbreak as well as he did during the fight in the novel.

God, I'm dreading this episode. More than Ned being beheaded or the Red Wedding, the Viper vs Mountain pissed me off the most of anything I've read.

Hrm, I read it on the app for free somehow. Maybe that was a limited time thing? I remember it being hard to find. And  for tonight.

God I love these books.

I just spent thirty minutes reading why the hooded man that confronts Theon in Winterfell at the end of ADWD is actually Septon Chayle (I think so).

And can't wait for reaction to the fight even though I'm not watching the series yet.

Red Wedding was definitely worse IMO but this is up there.
I can dig it, but the way GRRM wrote this scene made me - like Tyrion - want to puke. I seriously don't know if I can watch this.
Well, with the gruesome way they shot the actual death itself, it was about on par with the red wedding, I'll give you that. Ick.

I hated that part for sure, Oberyn was a great character. When Jon Snow got stabbed in the back I put the book down for about 6 months and seriously considered never picking it up again. Depends of course if he ends up being brought back as many suggest, but that was very close to being one favorite character loss too many for me.

Seems like they are making some significant changes to Sansa's storyline. Her identity is revealed, no lords declarant, Robin potentially getting sent away, etc.

Wow what a scene. Gruesome as I remember it. Of course I read that scene, what 10 years ago now or something like that?

Missandei is a damn near perfect looking woman, good lord. This series definitely finds smoking women to be naked.

I wonder where the Grey Worm story line is going. I don't recall that from the books at all but it's been a long time.

thats my only (albeit small) gripe about this show. I dont see where this angle is going (from the book standpoint) and is only taking screen time from the other awesome scenes.

They need to fill space or they'll pass GRRM right by.

Did the mountain crush his skull in the book too? I forget.

Agree with everyone, it lived up to the book. Had a pit in my stomach the whole fight even though I knew what was coming. The girl that plays Sansa has come a really long way acting wise since the first season.

My nitpick would be Jorah's exile played a lot better in the book IMO.
