I thought so, but I couldn't remember for sure. I went back and added spoiler tags to my post.I wouldn't be confident that stannis would exercise great control over his pillaging soldiers (see eg, the end of the last civil war). Has your spoiler been set up in the tv series yet? I know the character has appeared but I dont remember any more than that. (edit: I see this has been asked and answered)

Apparently not.I watched the first season before starting in on the books. So when I'm reading the books, I picture the TV characters in my head. I therefore remember stuff from the books as if I were remembering it from TV.

I still hold on to some of my pre-TV character visualizations, especially Tyrion because he's physically way different than Dinklage. I still picture the dwarf in the red coat from Don't Look Back. But, especially Joffrey, many of the superb performances have the character firmly visualized as the actors now. Some I go back and forth with though as well.

I've finished the first two Books - A Game of Thrones & A Clash of Kings. Just started #3 - A Storm of Swords.
How would you rank the books that are out so far? Is one a lot better than some others?

first 3 books are outstanding. the next two are good but kinda
. Like he had a great plan up until the end of storm, but then didnt know how to wrap it up. Im skeptical that he does wrap it up in 2 books and survives to even write book #7.

I think the first three books are by a mile the best fantasy I've ever read. And they get better if you read them again because you start to realize that that throwaway paragraph or brief aside 500 pages ago (or 2000 pages ago) wasn't a throwaway at all, and that the world he's created is richer and more tightly woven together than anything anyone else has done.IMO it really shows that the fourth book was written while he was struggling to figure out how to present the story he had in his head. It's not bad, but the story lines don't move forward with the same locomotive pace and force of the first books. Some of them hardly move forward at all in fact, and he introduces some new ones.But book five is better and it seemed that by the end of it he'd set things up for the final books to be great again.

Well that blows...I'm about half way through SoS and couldn't wait to start the next book! Without spoiling anything, what was so bad about about book 4? Does any of it have to do with book 3 being so good?(please say yes) Side question...the Mobile site works awesome here...I can click on the thread and it starts me right on the next new post I havent read. Is there any way to do that on the non-mobile site?

wdcrob's description of Book 4 is pretty accurate. It just seems like there was a lot of positioning of characters with not much progress or action compared to the first 3. It reads much slower than the other books as a result. I'm about 2/3 done with book 5 so I may like it more (or less) once I'm done, but it's already way better than #4.'Bigboy10182000 said:

I think the series as a whole would benefit from GRRM cutting a certain character's POVs in half.

Dany's plot in ACOK and ADWD are a chore to get through with very little payoff.

IIRC he originally planned for there to be a 5-year (or more) gap between the third and fourth books and then had a change of heart. But he still needed to allow time for the dragons to mature. So he added a book, which got too long and he chopped it into two and it became books four and five. So it really is sort of 'deleted scenes' and it's no wonder it went so slow for him and reads long. Hopefully having resolved all that will let him crank out the rest of the story faster. It certainly felt like he was back 'on track' at the end of book five to me anyhow.

spot on. He wrote it so deep and rich, he kind painted himself into a corner. He finally got his momentum moving in the right direction again. Still good, books 4-5 but not able to be great for logistical reasons.'wdcrob said:

I agree with that sentiment. I could have done with fewer/less extensive Brienne chapters also, particularly the ones not involving Jaime (which was a majority of them).

I enjoyed 4. 
It's not as good as the first 3, but I still thought it was enjoyable. Very slow moving, but I enjoy the world that GRRM has created and I think it's nice to get more background about what some of the other players are doing. In fact, I think that 5 was way weaker and filled with the main people doing things way out of character.
I'm getting ready to re-read 5 though, so maybe I'll like it more the second time through.

I agree, I enjoyed it too. Sure it moved rather slowly, but I thought book 4 was a chance for everyone to catch their collective breath and take inventory of all the collateral damage. Granted it involved some secondary characters and different perspectives, but it really seemed to show the physical and emotional tolls of the war.I enjoyed 4.

In ADWD they are pretty damn big, but 2 of the 3 are chained in a dungeon while Dany is playing politics and romance. I want charred flesh, fire and blood. I think it was mentioned (by Selmy?) that dragons can grow as large as they want as long as they have lots of food and space. If Dany had let them fly free to terrorize the countryside, she'd already have big old flying lizards to crush Westeros.

And when Tyrion was giving his speech, I was wondering why no one seemed to be worrying about people scaling the walls. I did love the look on his face as he walked away after the speech though. Kinda like "what the hell did I just say"Joffrey was great, especially trying to be tough during the "kiss the sword" part. I actually thought it was him on Cersie's lap on the throne at the end.The explosion was awesome though. I was actually asking my wife what happened to all the explosive liquid they were making. "That would make me the quarter-man. Just doesn't have the same ring to it"Loved the scenes between Sansa and Cersie.

Yeah, thats when I realized it was him, but I did notice the deer antlers on the battle field and was like "whoa" who's that in baratheon gear fighting w the lannisters?
I just rewound it and watched him take his helmet off three times, and I can't tell that there's anything distinctive about it.

Really? I didn't see a lot of helmets during the battle with stag antlers on them. For me they stood out prominently when he rode in on the horse. I had forgotten that the stag was a Baratheon thing and kept trying to place it in my head because it seemed to be important. It took me until Loras went into the throne room and took it off to make the connection with Renly, even then I briefly thought it might be another Lannister and not Loras. But he definitely stood out on the horse to me because of the stag horns.
When he's on the horse, I can barely see the stag horns if I look for them. When he's in the throne room, I can't really see them at all. (Well, just barely, but only because I already know they're there.) As soon as the shot cuts to him, he's got his hands covering his helmet to take it off, and as soon as it comes off, he puts it out of the camera frame.

Fair enough. For me the stag horns really jumped out when he rode in and when he came into the throne room I probably recognized him from other clues, not the helmet, and pieced it together.I think this is a very valid reason to approach your wife and explain to her why you need a bigger television. "Honey I couldn't see the stag horns" is a completely logical and defensible position.
Yeah, I might be the last person in the FFA without a high-def TV.

Yeah, I need to obviously rewatch this. I was so confused as to what happened. I thought it was more reinforcements for Stannis riding in again then all of a sudden Stannis is being dragged away and Tywin is walking into the throne room saying the battle is over. Im with the group that had a hard time seeing what was happening. Still really enjoyed the epidode though.
