HBO - Song of Ice&Fire Series -Varsity Thread - no TV only whiners (2 Viewers)

I'm new to the thread because I just finished the first season of Game. Here's an article on the season 2 characters if you're interested:

Game of Thrones: Meet the New Faces of Season 2
Not sure I feel happy about this season 2 love story stuff. These books are a lot of things, but a love story they aint. I hope they don't go overboard with this tangent.

Just finished the 3rd episode(Lord Snow). I'm liking it but hope it starts to move forward soon. I understand that with the amount of characters that there is a lot of time needed for setup and I've heard enough good things about the show to know it gets better.

I'm following along with this thread in it's original timeline along with the episodes. Thanks to all of those who supplied such valuable info to those of us who haven't read the books and especially for avoiding giving any spoilers. At least as far as I've read so far (page 10)
It definitely speeds up. Ep 3 was the most confusing, lots of setup. The next 7 episodes are loaded with twists, turns, and shocking scenes. I'd just be very careful in this thread. There are some moments best left unspoiled.
Will do...thx. So far you guys have been very cool with spoiler tags from what I've read. If that changes, I'll revisit the thread when I'm done. btw - I'm watching it on DirecTV HBO OnDemand. I was waiting for them to add it and they finally did. I'm guessing you guys are probably aware of that but just in case you weren't...
No ability to get HBOGO?
On Directv?

Yeah, I have that on my phone. I thought it might be available from their receivers. I got a dedicated home theater so I record the show on the DVR to watch it down there. I have a computer there so maybe I'll try it and see which looks/sounds better.

Yeah, spoilers from future books are in tags. I was more referring to people commenting on the show events.

You can watch HBOGO on your computer at HBOGO.com (Game of Thrones has been available on HBOGO since it aired) - it has quite a bit more content than just what is on-demand on HBO on the TV at any given time. Granted, it isn't as comfy as watching on the couch/etc.

What's with adding characters? I can see tweaking names a bit but adding characters? I suppose if they are combining characters then maybe.

I agree - although this show is so incredible, they'd have to work hard to disappoint me.

Because TV only watchers are too dumb to know the difference between Osha and Asha

Reading and hearing the names is a big difference though as far as keeping track of characters.

Im fairly confident this season is going to combine swords and kings based on casting amd the fact that thr prolouge to swords states that some events take place at the same time as events in kings. (im only 250 through swords though)

Because TV only watchers are too dumb to know the difference between Osha and Asha  To be fair, they sound very similar. The reader has the benefit of seeing the spelling and knowing exactly which person is being referred to. On TV, with the accents, it may not always be as clear. That being said, I doubt very many people who only watched the show would even know Asha's name. I probably wouldn't had I not read some message boards. I would have just known her as the wildling slave girl.

The wildling is Osha. :lmao: lol I actually did know that. That wasn't what I meant to type. Also, it proves my point pretty well.

Halfway through Book 2.

Martin uses the word gaunt more than any author in the history of the world I suspect.

Also, the constant new names has my head spinning a bit - it seems he has to introduce every unimportant character at any given point in the book and describe their banner or sigil as well. I feel half the time it's pretty inconsequential to the story and sort of brings it down a little bit.

All that said - still a fantastic read - those are really my only criticisms.

I find myself most excited to read about Arya and Tyrion and could do with out the Theon Greyjoy chapters.

Also, I wish there were more Daenyrs - only one chapter so far in the first 300 pages.

Now imagine this list after five books! It's like Colleen McCullough's Masters of Rome series, you feel like you meet everyone in Roman Civilization.

I'll deal with it since the story is so good. Into the last 100 pages of the book now and haven't been able to put it down.

Lady Melisandre is hot

Bonus
She's certainly not unattractive, but she's a good couple of tiers away from hot. At least from those pics.

Finished a Clash of Kings

Notes in spoiler tags below:

Still wasn't a fan of the whole Greyjoy takeover. I sort of get it but don't. I guess there wasn't enough put into the character beforehand to make it believable for me.

I'm a bit confused as to how the Stark children, Hodor, the frog children, Jojen and Osha avoided Greyjoy after he supposedly had their heads mounted to a wall. Was this explained?

Not enough Daenyrs for me but I suspect she'll be heavily involved in future stories as she starts to sail to Pentos.

Still my favorite character is Arya. Can't wait to see what happens with her. If she died, I would have been close to putting the book down for a few days.

Robb Stark not nearly mentioned enough or practically at all in this book. The book ends and I have no idea what to make of where he is both geographically and with his attentions.

Not sure if Catelynn killed Jaime Lannister or not, it said she drew her sword on him and that was her last chapter in the book. I suppose I'll find out.

Not sure I completely buy that the Imp was a war hero wielding an axe in the field and cutting down numerous men. It seemed very unbelievable the entire time I was reading it.

Martin does a great job making you hate Cersei and Joffrey, that's for sure. I'll be jumping right into the second book and I hope something bad happens to one of them soon.

Jon Snow yielding to the others? I'll buy it, but thousands of others already ready to march on the wall. Why do they want to get past the wall? What do they want with the mainland? The intentions weren't well discuss. I don't understand it admittedly or I missed it. They are "free men" yet they want to break into the world ruled by Kings?

Book 3: Again hoping for a lot of Arya, a lot of Daenyrs. Maybe I'm brainwashed from watching the HBO series before I read the first book but I liked their characters the best in the first season on the show which has me wanting to read about them more in the books.

Here's the problem I had. I sort of skimmed or mixed up people with all the introductions etc. going on as well, however, the majority of people introduced are not inconsequential. So then I am going back and re-reading some parts and looking at the histories in the back of the book etc. I'm taking my time more in book 3 because I feel like I went too quickly in parts of Clash of Kings.

BTW: Lord Mormont's crow cracks me up with the way he repeats the last word he hears.

Every time I read: "Corn, corn, corn" or "Snow, snow snow" from the Crow I chuckle a little.

Halfway through book 3.

One major criticism:

Love the Arya story, but she was captured now for what, the 3rd time? It's getting monotonous. I like the story, but this is ridiculous. We had Yoren take her captive, then the Lannister army, now we have Roose Bolton's people taking her. Annoyed with this

Martin definitely leans a bit too heavily on a few select stylistic/plot devices throughout these writings. This is one of them.

I've read 3 books this week. Will post my thoughts on Storm of Swords later.

Definitely got way too into the series. Last night I had a dream I was renting an apartment in the Free Cities. Except it was my modern day apartment with a TV and computer, etc.

I went down to my favorite local bar and my landlord was there, except his name was Zeb and he was a wizard. I walked outside and The Imp was out front drunk and talking trash so we got in a fist fight but The Imp won.

Then I woke up.

Seriously. I didn't know fiction could be so good.

I haven't turned my TV during prime time this week. Ended up really tired at work from reading til 3 am. Woke up from my dream last night at 3:30 and just stayed up to finish the book off.

Are we going downhill from here as far as the books?

New poster here, but a long time lurker. I have to say that this sounds too similar to my life; I've almost stopped reading them before bed because of it. Almost finished with ASOS and I'm thinking this is my favorite book so far. Disappointed to hear that the series goes a tad downhill from here.

Peter Dinklage walked home with the Best Supporting Actor award last night. I had thought he wasn't nominated, which I thought was a crime, but maybe it was just for the Golden Globes. Good for him! I was excited for him way back earlier in the thread and predicted he'd win some awards. Maybe I was wrong about the plural aspect of my predictions. It's gotta be really tough to actually be a talented actor but have to fill "niche" roles because of his height. Having this awesome role had to feel line a huge weight being lifted off his back.
