No one knows. Last report he had 400 manuscript pages completed about a year ago. He expects the book to be over 1500 manuscript pages. So, I would say he is at least a year from finishing writing, if not more.

THat's what I figured. I honestly think he has no idea how to reign the story in. I think we are going to get subpar products from here on out.

Could be that the fame has gotten to him a bit. With the show doing so well he's never been a bigger star then right now...I doubt hes in a rush to end it.

I dont agree with him not knowing how to reign it in though. He seems far too detailed to not have an idea of how to tie this stuff up...I actually think it will be easy for him.

It'll be interesting to see if/how years of speculation on many plot points by fans will have an impact on what he ends up writing. Like I wonder if he'd planned for Jon's true heritage to be a certain way at the outset but will now change it somehow to baffle all the speculators. Or if writing for the show will change some of the things he'd orignally planned for the book. We'll never know the truth of course.Wait - we're talking about the books here. Are we getting warning points for this?

Does that number include the 100 finished pages moved from Dragons to Winter? I feel like I saw something fairly recently that said he had more pages done.

Martin believes the two last volumes of the series will be big books of 1500+ manuscript pages each.[20] By October 2012, 400 pages of the sixth novel had been written, although Martin considers only the first 200 as "really finished", the rest still needing revisions.

I just read that as well. I cannot find the quote I thought I had seen earlier. GRRM has a tough task because he doesn't always write chronologically and he switches points of view. I read somewhere that before he begins writing on any given day, he re-reads and edits everything he wrote the day before. Also, when changing points of view, he goes back and re-reads all their POV chapters in the new book, plus many from the previous novels. Plus, he has to constantly check his facts against what he's previously written. So basically, he is reading more than he is writing, when he is writing.

He actually does call Elio and Linda at westeros.org for things he can't find sometimes.
 
Does anybody have a theory as to why the writers decided to not let Robb and Cat know that Bran and Rickon were "dead"? They made sure to show that theon killed all the ravens and so Robb and cat we only ever aware of theon taking winterfell and then there was no update ever on the status of the boys.

 
I'm really enjoying the pacing in season 3, and nearly everything is clicking for me, but man, it feels like they're missing the boat with the Robb/Jeynelisa story. I thought they'd take the opportunity to flesh the characters out more than we saw in the books, building up some genuine viewer interest, but it's just cookie-cutter stuff so far.

 
Good episode with some tidbits thrown in to satiate the action. Poor, poor Joffrey actor. That kid deserves awards, and a bug ### paycheck because he's never going to be accepted as anything other than one of the most hated characters of all time. Every time he's onscreen, my hate meter goes to 11.

Jamie's line about Renly and the throne of roosters was hilarious.

So glad emo Jon is gone. A great character was getting a bit cumbersome with all the pouting.

Unsure about the Mance casting. He's got the hardness, but not the charisma. A great actor though, so I'm not too worried.

Bran looks like he's one growth spurt away from growing a beard and his voice dropped an octave. He looked a foot taller in the opening dream. Good thing hes sitting most of the time. They should've given him estrogen pills in the offseason.

So glad Catelyn is realizing everything is her fault, even if for the wrong reasons. I don't recall the pox story, or any kind feelings about Jon. I don't know why they're giving her sympathy like that. She's not hateable, but she's definitely not likeable and a lot of this mess is her fault for jumping the gun on arresting Tyrion.

Where's Needle? I thought she grabbed it on the way out of Harrenhall.

And the ******* torturing Theon. Little maggot deserves it. Hope Bolton flays the flesh off his fingers! In fact, we'll see how far HBO takes it with that sicko.

My DVR cut off during the previews for next week though so I'm disappointed. I'll catch it again though. Can't understand why people don't like them. They never give much away and whet the appetite for the next episode, like a second cliffhanger. Oh yeah, and they're never what you think, so they rarely really give anything away.

The "are-they-good-or-bad" intro to the Reeds was super cheesy, but both of them came across very well once that façade was dropped.

 
Both Reeds were bigger than I expected based on the books. As much as the actor playing Bran is moving rapidly to adulthood, I think they've got a bigger problem on their hands with the girl playing Arya - she's not staying small.

Really good episode. Good choice folding Lem Lemoncloak into the Thoros character I think. I'd like to have seen Arya put in a better showing with the sword...

Hopefully these growth spruts spur them to do the seasons faster.

Jojen was 13 and Meera was 16, right? Meera looked ok, but I think they should have casted shorter nerdier Jojen.

Yes, Arya's height could be tricky. The only thing they can do is put her next to tall male characters as often as possible. She was pathetic with the sword though. Maybe it's cuz Syrio trained her with a pokey sword and not s slashy sword.

The book really played up how small and agile the Reeds were, and at times portrayed Jojen as almost sickly. Being small and crafty was kinda their thing, a Crannogman trait as it were.
One of the stories I most want fleshed out that has been left a somewhat of a mystery is the relationship between Howland and Ned - how did Howland save his life and live through that epic fight at the Tower Of Joy? Howland is one of the best enigmas in the books. I figure he'll get more exposure eventually as he's now the last remaining eyewitness to what went down between Lyanna and Ned and he seems to have remain loyal to the starks, and somewhat active behind the scenes having his people doing a bit of snipering during all the upheaval.

Another thought occurred in relation to the episode last night.

Seems like they're taking a slightly different approach to the subplot with Sansa & Tyrion. I'm wondering if they will bring Dontos back as they've already had Littlefinger blatantly tell Sansa his plans. More importantly they're setting up a much more clear motive for what goes down with Shae and Tyrion later (if that actually happens), assuming they follow the book having Tyrion and Sansa marry. They've set up Shae as jealous, so having them marry would be a better catalyst for Shae's actions following than how it was handled in the book.

Yeah, I hope they keep the marriage plot just to see the scene when Tywin tells Tyrion he has to marry Sansa. That should be a good one.
 
Anyone notice this when Robb was speaking to his wife?

red stripe of color over Robb's wife's head when they were talking in the command tent. Not sure what it was, but it was definitely there for a long time. Great foreshadowing.

Nice - I'll have to rewatch...I didn't notice.

 
One thing I really like about the series is how they do the sword fighting. Those swords are effing heavy and the way they move in this series is different than other things like say Braveheart, you can see the effort and momentum that it takes to lug these things around. They're clearly not flailing away with tin swords here.

I also agree that the Reeds didn't look as I was expecting. I was expecting dirty, painted faces, squat, almost pictish type people.

I need to watch again, but I got the distinct impression that they've combined Roose and Ramsay and that it's Roose who was torturing Theon (this strikes me as a good idea). I'm having a hard time finding confirmation on IMDB.
Roose is played by Michael McElhatton and I think is still in the riverlands at this point. Ramsay is rumored to be played by Iwan Rheon, who kinda does look like the guy Jenkins is talking about from last episode.
 
I remember before this season, WWTDD had some pictures of a "Sophie Turner" on their site. I was thinking, ahh, let's see how the actress who plays Sansa is looking these days.

Not the same Sophie Turner. Which was a relief, because the Sophie Turner on GoT is only 17 and I felt like a dirtbag.
