HBO - Song of Ice&Fire Series -Varsity Thread - no TV only whiners (6 Viewers)

GRRM selling the right to be in ASOIAF and be killed off. Should have auctioned them -- he'd have gotten a lot more than $20k a pop IMO.
I think I might die IRL before this mofo finishes the last books...
recent posting indicate he might need 8 books to finish the series off.

will be interesting to see if the show has a drop off after this season much like the book series did interms of acclaim.

people dont like stannis as it is and his role will be increasing

Watching this week's episode a 2nd time - the duel scene played much faster this time around for some reason. The beetle chat scene was even more useless the second time around. If it weren't for the duel, Sansa would have stolen the show interest wise.

I liked the beetle chat scene.
In terms of a random t.v. scene it was good, a last touching moment between the brothers before the truth comes out. But I still feel like they could have used the time on something more interesting/plot developing since there is so much in the books.

It helped bring a tense reality to Tyrion's situation. Two brothers, knowing one might soon die, trying to pass the time with forced idle conversation. I enjoyed it. Even more so given it's parallel in Westeros. The Lords "playing" at their game and wars, not giving a second thought to the thousands of common folk being slaughtered.

Thought it was a great moment.

I don't know if the duel needed anymore time. I don't think Oberyn could have danced forever and him knicking the Mountain a dozen times would have grown redundant.

That wasn't a criticism of the duel scene - I think they executed that nearly perfectly. I just noticed it played out much slower the first time I saw it than the second time. Probably I was just more intent on all the minutia the first time around, anticipating all the major components of the fight as they were depicted in the book.

I am enjoying the witch hunt over in the Non-book thread.

I haven't read the books.

Maybe I saw something in a preview last year, or maybe I read more into a certain scene I won't mention than you, but I'm completely incapable of spoiling anything.
I would not worry about it, people are getting burned at the stake in this thread for any little thing that may/may not relate to the book. I am not a GOT book reader, but have to say some of these blow ups are quite comical.

I have not been spoiled by anything posted in this thread so far, but I also avoid links that may contain book spoilers.
Actually the thing he mentioned was a pretty major spoiler for something that hasn't happened in the show yet. It has already been spoiled elsewhere online. If I was a non book reader and saw that I'd be pretty unhappy about it.
What exactly did he spoil? I missed it.

He said he was more interested in finding out what's going on with Zombie Catelyn than Varys's wizard in a box. Pretty sure she hasn't been re-introduced in the show yet. Not that it's a huge deal so far in the books (kind of a stupid turn if you ask me), but that's still a zinger I wouldn't want to have ruined for me.

Does the conversation change the relationship when Jamie frees Tyrion? Maybe they aren't going for Tyrion to be pissed at Jamie....which to me made little sense in the books.

OUCH!...that's bad.

To be fair to the OP though...there's only about a thousand fan made Stoneheart photos....and I do think there was an official HBO one.

Assuming things go down relatively similarly to how the do in the books, I figure that scene kind of deepens the sense of betrayal Tyrion will feel after he gets the truth on everything from Jaimie (including Jaime's role in things). Jamie was basically the only family Tyrion has had, and it turns out that even Jamie ended up sending some cruelty his way.

Like I said, it has been spoiled elsewhere online, but there are enough who've managed to stay "pure" where it would upset some of those in that thread. I think several in there are way too sensitive about the spoiler thing - but that one would have deserved a bit of justified outrage. Better to avoid it if possible.

That is bad. As far as show is concerned, Cat is dead.

I don't know for sure but I predict that the introduction of zombie cat will be the closing scene for this season.

I figure that or Tyrion giving daddy the business.

I figure Ygritte buys it this week. I wonder if they'll really try to cover both battles at the wall this season or leave the big one for next season.

They didn't overtly show that Oberyn uses a poisoned blade on his polearm, right? That seems like only deviation in the fight. Somewhat minor, but the fact that Mountain dies a long, agonizing death from it is called out clearly from what I recall.

Also, in the books, is the Maester who brings him back already around in KL when the duel happens? My memory isn't clear on that.

Yes, he is the one that fitted Jamie with his Golden Hand.

I thnk they have to do Stoneheart in the last episode. Whether or not it's thru confrontation with Brienne, some known Frey (Lame Lothar) or they actually show Dondarrion and Thyros come across the body and bring her back....I think they have to set that up for the next season.

Just before the fight it cuts to Oberyn's squire who is wiping down his blade with a "liquid" - I think that may be lost on non book readers tho.

And Qyburn, the disgraced Maester, is in KL - remember he was fitting Jaime with his new "hand".

Yeah, I noticed the wipe down too and thought that was the allusion. Nothing that happens afterward would make it clear that was going on though.

Thanks to both who reminded me that Qyburn has already been established in the show.

I think the armor on The Mountain was one spot where the tv show failed. What made him so indestructible was that he wore armor so thick that no sword could penetrate it. That's why Oberyn slicing at the joints shouldn't have done much more than nick him. Clearly in that situation he needed poison to even have a chance to beat Gregor. In the tv show, his spear was easily able to penetrate the armor Gregor was wearing. Given that possibility, Gregor wouldn't have even been as feared as he was.

If they had done all that much detail then they never would have had time for the beetle crunching kuh-chunk scene.

Could be misremembering, but I think that your right that the maester brought him back because the poison was his primary affliction.

In the show, the Mountain was stabbed twice in the chest with a spear and had his Achilles' tendon sliced. I think it will be tougher to make the argument that a doctor was able to bring him back from that in the show.

Yeah, the Lady Stoneheart reveal is almost certainly going to be the last shot of the season. It leaves time for Brienne & Pod to get captured by the BWB, etc. Then, next season, they could kick it off with Brienne searching out Jaime, etc.

Yep, knew I didn't want to see that filmed. I'm a wuss, but I turned as soon as I saw the Viper get tripped. I did see the last overhead shot and am glad I didn't watch.

I'm not sure how the showrunners are gonna tie all of this together in the next season or so. Of course, being as some characters are so apart, the timelines don't have to match exactly at any one time. One character - at least; really it's two - is almost out of published material.

next season should be alot of stannis/wall/boltons/theon, arya/tyrion going across the sea, lady stoneheart/ brienne, cersei/kingslanding, they have to get into the other greyjoys too, plus the other dorne folks.

seems like Bran and Sansa/littlefinger will have to pass the books next season.

I hope they do the manderly thing with the pies too, wonder if they marry Ramsay off to "fake" Arya or switch that wedding up

Recent casting news shows a huge emphasis on Dorne. Also the new High Septon/Sparrow & Septa Unella(?) so lots of time spent on the religious aspect it seems. Lots of Cersei vs Margery probably. Lollys Stokeworth is being cast so we'll keep seeing Bronn. Traveling with Jamie instead of Payne as someone guessed seems possible.

Is whoever has the keys to Gekko a book reader?
that or somebody who has watched a couple times and spends a lot of time thinking about game of thrones.
Given the atmosphere in that other thread, I wasn't going to say anything there about the Gekko post, and I'm definitely not going to PM them, being an alias that a bunch of people have had control of at one time or another an all. No one seems to have really picked up on it though, so we'll see what happens.

I think I'm re-reading this series this winter in time to be done before next season. I'm a bit fuzzy about everything that happens in book 4 and 5, except the major plot points.

They really messed up the Ygritte timing. Her death could have been way more impactful but too much time passed between the last time we saw her with Jon.

Isn't Brienne supposed to bite off someone's ear this season? So does she meet a weakened Hound and bite off his ear in a fight? Or does she fight with him to save Arya? Previews are hinting at Hound & Arya being run into by someone.

Dammit. Napped and figured I'd get up and watch it on DVR, but the friggin storm knocked out my Direct TV signal so I got like 2 minutes of Sam kissing Gilly and that's it. Went to HBO Go to see if I could watch it now, but it's telling me my DTV account doesn't include HBO which I HAVE ON RIGHT NOW :loco:

I've set up for a later recording. Was this episode any good? I was a little worried that budget constraints could make it less epic than it should be.

it was pretty good and HBO spent more money on that episode than any other in HBO history

somehow I thought Stannis would show up at the end and save the day

Whoa. I thought sure that part would be in this episode

It's been a while, but didn't Stannis save them? Guess that can be early next season?

That last seen with Jon didn't happen in the book did it?

close enough... He was sent out by Thorne if I recall, rather then it being his idea. He's out there talking to Mance when Stannis comes.

So - random, minor plot question: since the Magnar got a hammer claw in the brain will it be Tormund who marries Alys Karstark - or will they do away with that whole thread?

I thought the episode was well-done, though the whole logistics of the gate(s) will be nitpicked to death. The sweeping, long camera shot when Jon came down from the Wall was impressive.
