HC Andy Reid, KC (1 Viewer)

I laughed at the clock mismanagement hijinks at the end of the 1st half but Coach Andy really coached a hell of a ball game last night. He pretty much knew what Vick was going to do when he was going to do it.

But the Chiefs are 3-0 and scrapping for a fight with Denver. That's going to be a fun one, the Broncos better get them on their radar.

I'm not sure how or why the Chiefs hiring of Reid is a good thing..color me skeptical..

Since 2004, Reid has finished better than .500 just 4 times..

in that 8 year span, Reid's W-L record is just 66-61-1..I can't think of another coach in NFL history who has been so bad,for so long, and still held onto his job as long as Reid has..

for those who love the hiring because of what they think it'll mean for J. Charles, temper your enthusiasm somewhat..neither Westy or McCoy finished with more than 278 carries and 1333 yards, so any add'l recs will be offset by a lack of rushing yards - meaning Charles goes down to about 1300 yards from 1509 he had this season. Most leagues score RB's at 1 pt per 10 rush yards..so that's roughly 20 pts lost on yardage alone..now, sure, there'll be a net gain in fantasy pts for Charles, but neglible at best..I do not see Charles becoming any more vaulable or more prolific than ,say, Ray Rice if/when Norv Turner becomes OC, or Doug Martin, or Foster, ADP, etc..

why do we summarily dismiss what the Eagles' fans are telling us about Reid: that he's a bad in-game coach, bad with clock management, too pass-happy, and a questionable talent evaluator..
:goodposting:
I can't wait to watch Reid make the "great" Alex Smith throw the ball 50 times and call a time out 3 plays into KC's opening drive of the game.
Enjoy your dish of crow.

Seeing as how there's no 2013 Chiefs thread, and seeing as how there's no discussion re: offensive skill players besides Al Smith, Charles and Bowe...

... anyone have any thoughts on this Sean McGrath guy?

That was a heck of a game yesterday, pretty much what people were thinking would come from Kelce.... but... it came from McGrath.

How long is Kelce out for?

Also interested in McGrath... he looked good.

The last undefeated team.... the Kansas City Chiefs. Amazing.

I don't think we have an abundance of Chiefs fans here -- this would seem to be the *OFFICIAL* thread, but congrats to any KC fans who are reading this. Pretty nasty defense. Some Chiefs fan called up Sirius NFL Radio in August and told Pat Kirwan that KC would go 14-2, and he was completely serious, and adamant about it. Hopefully someone else heard this guy... he called up a few times. Anyway, the hosts basically laughed at him, and I was all -------> for about 5 minutes, but it was the call of the century.

Even if they lose to Denver twice, which they may or may not, they could still easily go 14-2 or 13-3. Really astounding. Reid is a great coach, as we all knew, and defensive coordinator Bob Sutton is coaching his ass off. Gonna be fun watching these guys in the playoffs. At some point, Alex Smith is gonna have to provide more offense than they have needed so far. Then we'll see what the team is really capable of.

could not believe he went for it on and 4th and goal from the 1 when up 17-16. that is not the andy reid i know and remember.

What a year for Reid in KC - he was awesome for Charles' FF performance and for the Chiefs in general.

But I missed a good bit of the 2nd half vs the Colts - I am just going to guess that Reid had some boneheaded playcalls or decisions - am I right?

This will shock you, but he didn't have any time outs remaining for use after the two minute warning. Well, except for the one he used immediately following the two minute warning.

They scored 44 pts without jamal charles and the team was devastated by injury yesterday. Kind of hard to put the blame on anyone really

Yup. No Fisher in the game. Hobbled Hali. Charles went down on the first series. Avery went down on the 3rd series. Flowers went down in the 3rd quarter. Houston went down as well. Davis went down in the 4th.

From Randy Karraker...

http://www.101sports.com/2014/01/06/ten-takeaways-wild-card-weekend/

"During the Chiefs’ 9-0 start, they beat one team that turned out to be a playoff team, when they beat the Eagles. In their final eight games (including the playoffs), the Chiefs played playoff teams six times, and lost all six. The two wins Kansas City had during the last eight weeks were against Washington and the Raiders, and they hammered both of them. As troubling for Kansas City fans, the Chiefs had the No. 1 scoring defense in the league during the first nine games, never allowing more than 17 points. In their last eight games, they allowed an average of 29.8, including 27 or more six times and 35 or more in three of those. The Chiefs need to supplement their defensive depth in case they lose a pass rusher next season, and upgrade to the point that they can consistently beat winning teams."

Also classic Reid. Great game planner, great at taking opportunity and never being beaten by an inferior organization. If the opponent is less organized or prepared and/or has less talent, it will almost never beat Reid.

It will be interesting to see what happens going forward.

Some KC fans are tired of it already:

Dale Seitter · Top Commenter · Works at US Army Retired

How about fixing Reid's desire to pass constantly when even he should know by now that there are no WR's worth a damn, the O-Line can't sustain blocks and Smith is no good throwing the ball more than 5 yards down field.

Gary Wilson · Top Commenter · Abilene, KansasWe're going nowhere fast with this baffoon in charge. He makes the same mistakes over and over and over, and is too stupid to realize it until it's too late. THEN, after yet another loss he acknowledges his mistakes. Then he does the very same things the next week. The man is not mentally fit for the job. Fat and stupid is no way to go through life.

James E Kelly II · Rolloff-truck driver at Debris BoxHere's the problem. One we need new receivers cause the ones we have aren't producing to catch passes. Oline is very weak and not protecting Alex Smith like their suppose to in order for him to attempt or complete passes. We can't depend on Jamal Charles for every touchdown or else you'll get him seriously injured. Defense needs to step their game coverage better to shutdown pass plays and run game against opponents. Get rid of Michael Cooper and Fisher they're garbage players. Finally, Andy Reid we as loyal fans of Kansas City Chiefs don't want to hear anymore bull#### excuses for these loses. If your program is not working then STOP ✋ IT and do what does work that had the team winning games. Our playoff chance is now on the line because of those loses and now we can be completely knockout this week by the Raiders. If you lose against the Raiders this week you should resign as headcoach. I have not once seen you get upset or argue about a bad call by any refs.
12 more years KC fans, lest you get the "ungrateful" and "impatient" labels from the national media types. And remember, Andy's the best coach you'll ever have. There are none better. And don't put the blame on Alex Smith, Andy gave up 2-2nd round picks for "his guy".

KC fans, still happy with Andy?
KC had 9 wins in the 2 years before he got there, including a 2 win season right prior. They haven't had less than 9 wins in his 2 years as coach. I think they'd be just fine youth him at the moment.
Oh he's absolutely an upgrade from Haley & Crennel. But has it been all KC fans had hoped for?
I don't know... Not sure I even know a KC fan to ask. He's a good coach, though. He wore out his welcome in Philly but that happens with anyone who around long enough it seems. Looks the the change worked for everyone.

That's why I was asking KC fans. I know there are some on this board and I'd like their thoughts.

huge KC fan and I am okay with Reid.....a little concerned about the lack of Charles usage in some situations, but I have always been leery of over working him and he was dinged down the stretch....

my main problem in KC.....the front office.....yeah I think we have had some decent drafts and we have some young talent......but KC seems to be the last team in the league to realize that this is a passing league.....(yeah I know you have to run too)......but the Chiefs WR's scare no one.....Bowe is a mid level guy, nothing more......for years KC has been saying we need a "WR2"....well hell, we could really use a WR1 if you want to be honest, let alone a WR2 or 3 to "compliment" Bowe.....they have #### the bed and swung and missed on every experiment they have tried at the position.....what really sucks is seeing all the other franchises "hit" on some of these young stud WR's.....it sucks bad....Smith is just another "guy"....another recycled leftover from another team.....

IMO this team will struggle every year to make the playoffs (especially as long as Peyton is around).....we will never be better than a #5 or #6 seed heading into the playoffs because we can't beat DEN......which means a road game wild card game at best.....just like last year going to INDY.....

we need to make a move and get a top flight QB or sell the farm and get Amari Cooper......something.....we need another game changer on offense to compliment Charles......

Seems like they need upgrades to both guard spots and RT and a #1 WR. If they do all of that, the Chiefs could be really dangerous next year.

Oddly enough I actually find the dislike for Reid this season to be a bit much. Both the Eagles and Chiefs both fell victim to very high expectations in their second seasons less then 2 years removed from being 2 of the 3 worst teams in football.

There are a bunch of potential #1's in this draft besides Cooper.

I think Reid makes too many strategic mistakes...

Against Pittsburgh a couple weeks back, Chiefs had a 4th and 1 on the 11 with only ~25 seconds left in the half. They turned the ball over on downs and the inability to put up any points came back to haunt them at the end of the game. With so little time in the half, it just didn't seem like a good risk to take. A FG makes it a one point game. Even if you convert, there is a low chance of a TD...

Why Andy Reid will be coaching the Chiefs for the 'foreseeable future'

Excerpt:

Chiefs special teams coordinator Dave Toub has worked with Reid for almost 20 years in the NFL and college, including all 11 seasons with the Chiefs. He said he has never known Reid to do much more than tend to his job.

"[Football] is his hobby," Toub said. "This is all he does. I'm trying to get Andy to play golf. I'm trying to get him to go hunting. He just won't do it."

Reid has a non-football bucket list. He is vague about what's on it, though he did say that items such as climbing Mount Everest and breaking par at Pebble Beach are not included.

"There are things you want to do," Reid said. "I try to chip away at them. There's nothing huge. I went to Italy [last summer]. Good eating. I ate my way from the north to the south."

Mahomes thinks it'll be a while before Reid is turning his attention to his bucket list full time.

"Other than spending time with his grandkids, he doesn't do any of that stuff," Mahomes said. "He's all about football and cheeseburgers."

Were there serious thoughts that Reid would hang it up after this year? I bet he retires when Mahomes does (unless he's forced to earlier for health reasons). He's not going to make the same mistake that Belichick made.

I didn't expect him to retire this year. Although, I think he only has 3-5 years left. Mahomes has 10 years left in his career. Reid is turning 66 years old in about a month. He'd be the oldest coach in NFL history if he goes until the end of Mahomes career, given his health that's very unlikely.
