HC Shell Kicks Team Off Practice Field (1 Viewer)

Raiders HC Art Shell was so disgusted by what he saw at practice today, he called the team together in the middle of the field and told them to get out of his sight. It was a sobering sight as the team left the field in subdued silence. "You've got to work out there," he told the media. Players still appeared chastised after showering and leaving the clubhouse. Asked what Shell said during his diatribe, DT Warren Sapp said, "It was a statement that was pretty well felt throughout the whole team I would expect. And if it wasn't, then we're in trouble. "I don't think it was a particular play (that led to Shell's blowup), probably just the overall tone of the practice. Guys weren't going hard. They were going through the motions. Sapp said that to a man, player and coach, everybody "got the message."

This is a great message by a coach. I don't think it is as big of a deal as people will make it out to be. I have had this happen to me as a player before and I have done it as a coach as well. It sends a message that the team will get and they will come back harder the next practice. Don't read into it to much.

Agreed. I've got the Raiders winning four games now. Before I only had them down for three.

If Art does this 12 more times, they'll go 16-0!

Wow. We're not even in the regular season yet. I would say Shell is in danger of losing this team way too early but they were lost already so maybe this is what they need, a firm :kicksrock: in the ####.

This happens every year with some new coach storming off the practice field, or kicking the team off of it. Move along, nothing to see here.

Wow...you're half-assing it because you don't want to be practicing and the coach gives you the rest of the day off. That's real positive reinforcement. Maybe I should send my kid to his room with desert when he doesn't want to eat dinner.

Step one for Shell is to clean house. He has to identify the bad apples and get rid of them by next season.

Shell should pick a big guy and beat the snot out of him (think Tony Soprano this past season). My nomination would be Gallery. He wouldn't even have to worry about Gallery punching him back. The kid would likely just hold him.

Hasn't Gallery been beaten enough so far this preseason?

I am sorry, but isn't this the image that the Raiders have been trying to show the league from the beginning of their existance? That image has always been of a team that likes the players who are considered "rebels" in the NFL. The difference is that back in the 60s and 70s those rebellious players could still function as a team - they held each other accountable to do their job and made sure that everyone was on the same page or heads rolled.

The once proud Raiders are no longer any semblance of a team. Instead they are a bunch of individuals with personal agendas that may or may not benefit the team. I really don't think that Shell's cutting a practice short will have a big effect with these guys. What they really need is a player to get in the face of the others on this team and get it resolved. When Shell and Upshaw were players do you think they would have kept quite over the lack of commitment or preperation that has caused this team to suffer. Would Stabler or others allowed the team to settle for leading the league in penalties if the wins did not come with it.

Never played football, did you?

Well, Brooks doesn't really care if they go 0-16; just so he plays well. He'll probably think he played well if he gets to complete TWO passes in a game.

:lmao: :lmao: :lmao: :lmao: Man, Gallery seemed like such a right on pick a couple years ago. I thought he'd be ascending to the Jones, Ogden, Pace, Roaf stratosphere in a few seasons but he is struggling just to be a decent starter as of right now. Myself, I'm a big fan of having big time studs on your offensive line but the hit rate in the Top 10 of the draft in the last 5 years or so has been embarassing - think Mike Williams and Leonard Davis. :bag:

I would have to assume that Shell was likely justified for his decision.

He is trying to get it drilled into every one of those players heads that they are accountable for their actions and the impacts on the rest of the team.

If this was one group of players that caused the problems, they now have the whole team upset with them, not just the coach. I think it was a good move.

Players still appeared chastised after showering and leaving the clubhouse."I apologize for that (stuff) that happened today," quarterback Aaron Brooks said.

Bring on Andrew Walter.

I don't remember something like this before. I'm sure it's happened, but I can't remember one.

This is a debacle, but who didn't see this coming? Art Shell wasn't hired because he was the best man for the job, he was hired because he was the best of a very small lot that would actually take the job! And then Shell hires TOM WALSH!?!?!?! to run the offense?

This reminds of something I meant to post earlier.

On Mike & Mike (ESPN Radio), they are in the thick of their "2 a Days"...whereby they preview two NFL teams each day and then each give their expected record for the team. Well today they did the Raiders, and the two guest hosts predicted 3-13 and 4-12, respectively.

Then later in the program, Mort came on to chat in his regular weekly spot. When the guest hosts asked Mort about their predictions for the Raiders, Mort says, "you guys are giving them too much credit!" :pickle:

Mort said he thinks the Raiders will be 2-14 this year and will be at the top of the draft deciding between Quinn and Brohm.

Now love or hate Mort, he's not prone to throwing any team under the bus like that, things in Oakland have to be just ridiculous.

Marty Mornhinweg did this back in 2001. I think it worked really well for the Lions that year. :bag:
Code:
THE LION KING: First-year Detroit Lions coach Marty Mornhinweg (the ex- 49ers assistant) angrily kicked his players off the practice field Monday and sped off on his Harley, putting a new twist on the age-old coaches' doctrine: "My way -- or the highway."-- That practice got off to a rocky start when a staff cell phone went off (cell phones are prohibited anywhere near the field). Then the practice tempo wasn't good enough. So "Mad Marty" called a halt after 35 minutes. Foes in the new NFC North Division immediately devised a game plan: Smuggle phones into all future Lions practices, turn up the ringer volume and call every day after stretching ends.

Wow.... things aren't going well. WHO WOULDA THUNK IT???.

I'll take the year off, then I'll be back when Shell, Walsh and Brooks are elsewhere in '07.

Was this ever in doubt? What a joke of a franchise.
If my RAIDERS don`t score at will against SF this weekend after what shell just did then i will agree with you..........we are a joke.

Jerry Porter thought bubble: "Soooooo . . . if we loaf every day, then we won't have to practice at all!"

They deserved it..lack of heart..Raider nation STINKS!

What a sad state of affairs. As a fan, I can't ever remember being so disgruntled with the organization going into the season, there is usually some ray of hope going into the season--not this year. :bag: Nothing will ever change until Al Davis gives up control of the team and hires a GM. A complete rebuilding process is needed and that starts at the top. Al, you were great in your prime, now its time to let go and look to the future instead of trying to recapture past glory.

Al Davis is dead. Have you seen him lately? Looks like an Egyptian mummy.
