the list of shows you enjoyed are all shows I liked. based on that I'll give a couple of suggestions out of left field. Gilmore Girls and Veronica mars. Both are dramas with some comedy and both have the witty Buffy dialogue. VM is centered around a mystery. GG is about a mother and daughter living in a small town. VM has more of an edge and GG is more traditional.
Gilmore Girls is very good. My wife loved that show so I caught a lot of it.

Im currently watching Orange Is The New Black...just got done with the first 9 episodes...waiting for the next couple discs to come in from Netflix.

I definitely reccomend this show based on the other shows you have watched and the type of genre you are looking for.

six feet under is great, as is Friday Night Lights.

Fans of Buffy and Angel I also recommend Veronica Mars. Wife and I dug it, and it is only 3 seasons.

I know you said completed, but there are a few good shows that are ending this year. by the time you get through what is out, the final seasons will be appoaching dvd: Sons of Anarchy, Mad Men, Boardwalk Empire, and True Blood (guilty pleasure). I would rank siz feet under overall #1, but would do the other 3 I just listed over any other in your poll.

Rome has been mentioned, and I loved Carnivale as well.

I love Prison shows, even enjoyed Prison Break more than most so Orange is definitely on my list. Like Orphan Black, I just want it to get a little deeper in its run.

Fringe got more votes than I expected. I am going to look into Friday Night Lights as that seems to be a popular "other" choice.

Thanks to everyone for the suggestions and votes :)
I voted for Fringe, based on what you're looking for. Maybe one of the most arc-heavy shows I can remember, from shorter arcs to background main story arcs that last throughout the entire series.

Based on what you've listed as having watched, did you try Mad Men and not like it? Or are you just waiting for it to be over?

I have never seen the shows in your poll, but based on the other shows you listed and TV criticism I read, I seems like 6FU would fit in with your tastes.

Also, not quite of the same caliber as your top 5, but Brotherhood would probably fit in with your tastes, and was fairly good.

I did not vote as the only show listed I have seen was six feet under. I watched all of season one, but didn't love it.

I think I'd go with Homeland.

Veronica Mars, especially seasons 1and 2, have the depth you're looking for; extraordinary passionate fan base that funded a Kickstarter campaign for a movie several years after the TV show ended

Friday Night Lights is very good, but be warned: Season 2 is TERRIBLE. And this isn't like how The Wire fans talk about Season 2 of their show. S2 of FNL shouldn't have aired.

Couple recs haven't seen yet in the thread...

The Shield - excellent cop drama and character study, show ran for a long time so there's a lot of content and was good to the finish

Homicide: Life On The Street - well-acted, well-written procedural, not as serialized as a lot of the other stuff mentioned in this thread, might be a little hard to find because of its age

If you're in the market for a non-laugh track comedy, gotta go with Malcolm In The Middle. Show had a long run and covered a lot of ground.

If you haven't seen it I'd love true detective to the top of the list. There will be another season but completely unrelated

In the same anthology vein American Horror Story, although I think it went way downhill after season 1

Homicide gets a vote from me. And I'll also throw out Justified. The final season is coming up in the spring so catch up and watch the finale along with the masses.

I loved the Shield. It was only bumped out of my top 5 by Breaking Bad but I listed it under shows that I loved.

Thanks for the warning on Season 2 of FNL.

I have not tried Mad Men. I am not a big fan of that time period but I do know people think the show is very high quality.

Not familiar with Brotherhood so I will read up on that.

If you like Buffy and Babylon do NOT watch Mad Men. You will be lost within 15 minutes.

*My 5 favorite shows ever are:

The Wire, The Sopranos, Buffy, Breaking Bad and Babylon 5
Two of these are not like the other.
It is just a personal preference. I did not say these were the 5 best shows ever made, just my personal 5 favorites. I am sure you could find plenty of people who did not like all of these 5 shows but that is not really the point of the thread obviously.

Justified is another on my to watch list. I will likely devour this once it is complete.
The upcoming 6th season will be it's last, so the whole thing will be wrapped up around April 2015.

One of the best shows on TV at the moment, I think. It's not ambitious enough to ever really flirt with a Breaking Bad/Wire/Shield level of prestige drama, but as a well-done modern day Western, it's fantastic. Though, Season 2 of Justified was one of the best seasons of TV ever.

A worthy flagship for the network after The Shield I'd say (though I think Sons of Anarchy takes that title from a ratings perspective, but Justified is the better show).

Check out boardwalk, homeland, or GoT if you haven't seen any of those.
GOT is a 100% must as I am a fantasy fan. Holding off has been hard but I think with Season 4 complete I might watch this in a burst soon.

I think I will like Boardwalk but I have heard varying opinions on the show.

I will most likely give Homeland a shot in the next couple of years.

Is Justified a 13 episode per season show or a 20-22 episode per season show?

12-13 per season.

I don't imagine I'll ever watch the entirety of a 20-22 episode/season drama again once "Parenthood" ends.

True Detective - each season will be unrelated, similar to American Horror Story, so you can watch the 1st and only season so far. It was very good. Only downfall was I and most didn't love the ending.

Why do you say that? I'd rank both B5 and Mad Men in my top 10. Haven't seen Buffy.

The answer here is Mad Men. By a mile. One of the best shows of all time.

For lighter fodder what about Entourage? It jumped the shark in the last couple of years but it is entertaining tv.

I'll throw another one in that doesn't get much love: The Tudors
:goodposting:

I really enjoyed this show as well.

I haven't seen it mentioned, so I'll throw in Being Human. There's a British version and an American one. It's about a vampire, a werewolf, and a ghost trying to live "normal" lives. American version just ended its run this season.

ETA: Merlin, another show that was on SyFy, was pretty good, too.

andy- knowing your love of the sci-fi, I think you'll enjoy Fringe, kind of an X-files vibe to it. Torchwood is a lot of fun too, same kind of idea. But 6fU is far and away the best of these you've listed- great writing, acting and direction.

my favorite show of the last couple seasons has been The Returned (Les Revenants)- French supernatural thing. Only one season so far, so that works against you... but pretty great stuff.

Did you ever watch The Prisoner?

Torchwood would be right up his alley.

If you liked Breaking Bad I would give Weeds a shot. It is like a comedic version of Breaking Bad.

I liked Entourage. I watched it all through. It falls in that nice niche of comedy's with out laugh tracks for me.

Did Torchwood get a proper ending? I got confused when reading about because it looks like the show either morphed or got a spin off or something and I never really followed up with it.

I never watched The Prisoner. Is that a BBC show?

The Prisoner was BBC, I think- but from the late 60s. One of my all-time favorites- might've been only one season... maybe two.

Torchwood had a follow-up miniseries that was ok. If the original didn't have a proper ending, it didn't bother me.

17 episodes for the 1st Prisoner, had somewhat of an ending.

It's been 20+ years since I saw it- but I remember loving the ending. Could've been that I binge-watched/bong-hitted my way through it... maybe even in one sitting.
