Help me win a Best Bottle (wine) party (2 Viewers)

Wife and I are going to a "best bottle" party this weekend. Each couple brings two bottles of the same wine. One of the bottles from each couple is uncorked and everyone samples each bottle. Everyone then votes on the "best" bottle of wine. Winner gets to keep all the unopened bottles.

The category is California reds.

Guess I need to shoot for a real crowd pleaser. Any oenophiles have advice on what to get? Price range is $15-50 per bottle.

That's a pretty big price swing if everybody's bringing the same two bottles of wine.

Not even remotely a wine guy, think I'd focus less on winning and more on getting hammered for closer to $30 than $50. Plus, if the party gets going good, the winner is going to open up half of the prize bottles anyway.

How bout just be the couple that buys the cheapest wine and gets drunk on everyone else dime

Pick up a bottle of Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars 1973 Cabernet Sauvignon. Should do well with that one.

I work in the industry, and a huge wine snob (almost kidding about the snob part).

Where are you? And what kind of access do you have to wine, i.e. wine shops/wine stores? Also, what kind of crowd are we talking about at the party? Wine geeks? Pounding CA Chardonnay on the regular? Beer drinkers who don't care about wine?

Shale Oak petit verdot

I'm a big fan of Paso Robles wine. In fact, I cut my teeth tasting there. Haven't had Shale Oak, I'll check it out the next time I'm down there.
To win, you need to appeal to everyone, and that does not mean something sophisticated, it means something smooth, flavorful, probably a little fruit-forward.

I'd go with Paso Robles too. Daou or Justin cabernet sauvignon at about $23/bottle. Dudes like it. Chicks like it. Win.

DAOU had sub $50 bottles? I gotta check on that.

Love Paso wines too. Cotes du Tablas would be in consideration for me (not sure of the price on what's available but usually $30). A fun easy high alcohol dessert wine could work here. Food pairing always in play.

Daou is an excellent choice.

Orin Swift Prisoner is another but more costly.

What does "best bottle" win?

Live in Denver. A couple of large stores with a good selection nearby. The couple that are hosting are definitely wine snobs, but don't know about the rest of the crowd. I'm assuming they are not all wine snobs as this is a charity event. Given that, I just need to aim at impressing the uninformed masses, no?

Deal with what?
People that didn't read something and then ask a question about something in the reading (and many other similar situations).

"What's the date?"

"It's right there on the board...where I've been writing the date every day for the last 7 months."

"Oh"

Yeah, if you wanna win a blind tasting w/ non-geeks, you want to appeal to the masses. The Prisioner (Orin Swift) will be popular, as will Meomi Pinot Noir.

It's late, let me do a little research in the Denver area to see what might be available at the local wine shop. I'll update tomorrow.

:whoosh:

Had a good one today...

"Why did I miss 10 points on my packet?"

"You didn't turn in one of the papers.  Looks like you're missing the 13 Colonies Map"

"I thought for sure I turned it in."

"Let's look at your packet. Yeah, instead of the map you turned in your take-home book contract for math."

"Oh...well they're both yellow. That's why I got them mixed up."

"Kayden? One's a map you labeled and shaded. The other one says your parents owe $65 if you lose the book."

The Prisoner is a good choice for this
