I had the pleasure to go see Jonze's new movie Her this past weekend and I probably have not felt this strongly about a movie since NCFoM and TWBB both released in 2007, Paul Thomas Anderson, Coen Brothers, you see a pattern with movies I tend to gravitate towards and the directors.
This is much different movie than those two. There is not one shot fired, not one bomb goes off, this is a love story with a nice twist to it. I also believe it is a snapshot of society right now and where we are heading. The movie takes place in the future although not far into the future, perhaps 10-20 years and it all takes place in Los Angeles, looks like they took real LA and then thru great use of CGI without it being in your face, they added some buildings and made it look very future without being futuristic. I lived in LA/Santa Monica so I recognized a lot of the shots and real buildings that are standing there.
I don't want to give away much but I think most know that Joaquin Phoenix who is exceptional in this movie, he is on the tail end of a divorce where he is not ready to sign the papers and works as a writer for personal cards like a Hallmark company but more modern. He ends up quite lonely and purchases a new software OS and ends up discovering a lot from this software. Not just about the imaginary person inside the software but about himself, life, death, they are all themes that play across this movie.
I know audiences did not receive this film well over the weekend, that's a real shame because I have seen everything that is nominated for just about anything here during awards season and I really cheered hard last night when Jonze walked across the stage to pick up his Golden Globe. This film is powerful and I believe it will develop a cult later on and in 10-20 years we might look back and say "They told us this was coming".
My wife informed though that not everyone is going to like this movie, the folks we went with are very open minded hippie types in their own way so I might be a little in my own world here to a degree. I loved this movie, I want to see it again because it was so good I felt like I might miss something if I looked away for a second. Jonze uses close ups of the face like Phoenix and it really makes a difference in conveying emotions in the film.
I came away with so many ideas from this movie. We ended up going out for lunch and dinner with the couple we went with, discussed the movie for hours, that's the kind of impact I'm talking about. I understand this film might not be for everyone but the majority here are in their 30s and 40s, that's got to be the target audience perhaps folks that are older or more mature will enjoy it but the Seniors in our theater were hissing a couple times. I would not take children but mainly because they will be bored.
Try to find your way to the theater and check this out, it won't stay for long as it is not making a lot of money, shame that more folks are not interested in it but again I understand why, just wish it weren't that way. Feel free to ask any questions but I encourage you to take a date and go see this movie. It should hit home for the FF addicts in here as well, lots of themes in the movie that can apply to other walks of life.
Best film of 2013 for me, bar none.
