Her-Written/Directed by Spike Jonze (2 Viewers)

Ministry of Pain

I had the pleasure to go see Jonze's new movie Her this past weekend and I probably have not felt this strongly about a movie since NCFoM and TWBB both released in 2007, Paul Thomas Anderson, Coen Brothers, you see a pattern with movies I tend to gravitate towards and the directors.

This is much different movie than those two. There is not one shot fired, not one bomb goes off, this is a love story with a nice twist to it. I also believe it is a snapshot of society right now and where we are heading. The movie takes place in the future although not far into the future, perhaps 10-20 years and it all takes place in Los Angeles, looks like they took real LA and then thru great use of CGI without it being in your face, they added some buildings and made it look very future without being futuristic. I lived in LA/Santa Monica so I recognized a lot of the shots and real buildings that are standing there.

I don't want to give away much but I think most know that Joaquin Phoenix who is exceptional in this movie, he is on the tail end of a divorce where he is not ready to sign the papers and works as a writer for personal cards like a Hallmark company but more modern. He ends up quite lonely and purchases a new software OS and ends up discovering a lot from this software. Not just about the imaginary person inside the software but about himself, life, death, they are all themes that play across this movie.

I know audiences did not receive this film well over the weekend, that's a real shame because I have seen everything that is nominated for just about anything here during awards season and I really cheered hard last night when Jonze walked across the stage to pick up his Golden Globe. This film is powerful and I believe it will develop a cult later on and in 10-20 years we might look back and say "They told us this was coming".

My wife informed though that not everyone is going to like this movie, the folks we went with are very open minded hippie types in their own way so I might be a little in my own world here to a degree. I loved this movie, I want to see it again because it was so good I felt like I might miss something if I looked away for a second. Jonze uses close ups of the face like Phoenix and it really makes a difference in conveying emotions in the film.

I came away with so many ideas from this movie. We ended up going out for lunch and dinner with the couple we went with, discussed the movie for hours, that's the kind of impact I'm talking about. I understand this film might not be for everyone but the majority here are in their 30s and 40s, that's got to be the target audience perhaps folks that are older or more mature will enjoy it but the Seniors in our theater were hissing a couple times. I would not take children but mainly because they will be bored.

Try to find your way to the theater and check this out, it won't stay for long as it is not making a lot of money, shame that more folks are not interested in it but again I understand why, just wish it weren't that way. Feel free to ask any questions but I encourage you to take a date and go see this movie. It should hit home for the FF addicts in here as well, lots of themes in the movie that can apply to other walks of life.

Best film of 2013 for me, bar none.

Best film I can come up with where "If you liked this then you'll like"…Lost in Translation which I think loses a lot from big screen to TV and I understand why some folks did not like it as much. I love that film but agree it looks a little different on TV than it did in theaters. I feel the same way about Her. If you wait to see it you will miss some of the impact the director intended on the big screen. There are moments of Phoenix where his up close shots take the whole screen. I would encourage you to try and see it in a theater if you can.

My favorite movie that I saw this year. I don't see the comparison with Lost in Translation at all.

ETA: For me the best comparison would be Eternal Sunshine of a Spotless Mind.

yea, unfortunately the trailers show a guy "falling in love" with his phone..

Reading what was written above it seems a lot deeper than that, but the trailers were so  that I had no thoughts to see it.

May look to rent it once it is out now that I read what was written by the OP, but not a "theater" viewing type movie for me.

I never go to the theater to see a movie. This is the first movie I really want to go see. Not that it's a theater movie but I wan't to see this movie, like now.

It looks amazing.

when they make a movie about a guy banging his xbox, Ill go watch it

I like my electronics a bit curvier than a cell phone

Well, that's sorta the premise of the movie.
Yea, I get that.. but IMO, the trailers didn't show the "why".. Just....

"hey, there is a sexy voice talking to me and listening to me and now I'm in love".. which lead me to  and wonder, did they see who is behind the voice for siri?? ;)

Based on the OP description there is more to it than that, which may lead me to watch it once it is out for rental.

Is It just me or does he look like a younger Tom Selleck?

ETA: Haven't seen the movie. Seen the preview in the theatre a couple times.

Yeah, there's more to it but that's the basic idea. Anyway, hoping that some more people will see the movie so it isn't just me and MoP in here talking about it.

Phoenix? I don't think he has the physical presence of Tom Selleck, in fact Jauquin has to work a lot harder than most as he's not a pretty boy and that makes his acting a lot better IMHO.

 It's 2014
It was released in LA/NYC in 2013 late. It is up for awards with other 2013 films. You always come down on me like a freight train and I ought to piss on your ignorance here but I guess you don't know everything after all.
A little testy today are we. I always come down on you? I rarely reply to you. Her had a limited release in December 2013 but the wide release was on Jan. 10th of 2014. The release was pushed back for awards purposes.

I tried to choke my wife with a dead cat during sex last night and it didnt go over that well.
That line from the movie, you gotta understand the context, the movie is not about this or some perverted sex movie. Nothing like that.

I believe that line is uttered by Kristen Wiig, she's in the credits but she is not visually seen in the movie.

Ur right BC, my bad on being a testy lil #####. A lot of movies that end up in the awards or nominations are released in LA/NYc the final 2-3 weeks of the year and then go wide in Jan. August Osage County was another and Inside Llweyn Davis both followed similar tracks.

Will definitely see this at some point, thanks for starting the discussion.

I loved the movie, but that line will forever be burned into my psyche.

Just looks...quick look up at the screen and first actor you'd think of besides Jauquin. That's all. With the hair, mustache, and the glasses I thought of Tom Selleck.

That's fair but I think some folks are gonna see this and think video rental but I feel like you are gonna lose a lot on a TV here. Those in close shots are important and I think you'll lose that in TV format.

I still think if you liked LiT that you'll like this movie, I also like Eternal and understand why you brought it up. I think if you are a fan of either then you will like this film.

Been meaning to start a thread on this. GREAT movie and much better than I expected it to be.

The previews don't do it justice at all.

I really enjoyed this, and agree with the comparisons to Lost In Translation, etc. in terms of tone/pacing.

Also, MoP, the reason LA looks CGI'ed with new buildings is because they did some filming in Shanghai as well, and melded the two into a future Los Angeles.

I wasn't surprised that I liked it—Spike Jonze has never let me down—but I was surprised by just how much I liked it. Scarlet practically steals the movie with her voice alone, and I don't think Joaquin Phoenix has ever been this great.

Spike Jonze did a terrific job of creating a world that's not too far in the future, yet still seems like a sci-fi movie. loved, loved this movie.

Scarlet Johanson plays the OS if that helps? You can visualize her the whole time.
I can't stand her so I tried to picture Salma Hayek instead.
I honestly thought she might kill the film but after a few exchanges between her and Phoenix I eased up some. I could think of other voices I would prefer and I don't think Johansen should be doing cartoons and voice overs but she pulls it off. Scarlett also reminds me of a former gal pal so she always brings some personal feelings into all of her roles for me.

My favorite movie of 2013 (I'm in Los Angeles, so I saw it in 2013). I'd even say it's probably one of my top-5 movies of the past 15 years, along with American Beauty, There will be Blood, City of God and Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind.

It has an Asian feel/vibe, that's probably where I pulled the LiT comparison and it all makes sense after watching the movie. I did not know that part I bolded but it just brings it all together for me. I'm not kidding that this is the best film I have likely seen in a few years, movies like this do not always appear every year.

Ranking my personal top 5 and I'll put Her at #1, the rest can be shuffled but I would say

1-Her

2-Wolf of Wall Street

3-All is Lost

4-Dallas Buyers Club-2 Golden Globes for both McConaughey and Leto, the minute Leto won I knew MM would win as obviously folks saw this movie.

5-Inside Llewyn Davis

DBC is another film I think won't be everyone's cup of tea but it has a strong impact. I probably like the performances more than the film if that's possible.

I love Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind as well. My favorite movie of his. I think this is Joaquin's moment. Based solely on previews it looks powerful, deep and thought provoking.

I gotta tell ya, I'm suprised by all the positive reviews you guys are putting up. I watched the first half hour or so on the darewall last night and thought it was a little too rom-com for my tastes. I certainly wouldn't give it the praise I'm seeing in here. I guess I'd better give it another shot.

Last night, Leto wins for Supporting Actor and Bradley Coper who was also nominated sits there like a kid who dropped his ice cream cone(he knows he won't get a lot of nominations) as Leto accepts the award and then you see Mathew McCounaughey later in the show win for best actor and the first person standing up and applauding is Joaquin Phoenix, that shows a level of class that not all of them have. He doesn't need an award to know he is very good on screen. Cooper displayed why I think he won't win many awards for a while at least.

It's not some sort of formulaic romcom love story, but it is very much about human love and relationships.

Dozer, I hate rom-com that's the truth. I really do not enjoy a lot of those early movies that McCoughnahey did in his career where he was always playing the hunk opposite some bimbo blonde but he managed to get out of that rut and into more meaningful films.

I think this is so much more than a rom-com but if you feel differently that's how it goes. I would try to sit down and really watch the movie, lot to take in and this film clocks in at 2 hours, it felt like 30 minutes to me. I wasn't ready for it to end and then there is a second towards the end where I thought it might go one way and then thankfully it did not but I felt like Phoenix might do something in the very last scene of the film and unfortunately if I mention it, might ruin the experience slightly for others but if you saw the film and you watch him and Amy Adams walking together, for a brief moment I thought something terrible was going to happen.

You can't sit down and watch this after 6 hours of football, not gonna work. I watched it at the 10AM show which I know is too early for many but I was waking up and drinking coffee through the film, was not hit by the daily dose of life before I watched it. I would encourage a clear mind/head before viewing.

Jonze didn't direct that.
I don't know who directed it, just replying to a couple people who reference the movie.
You said it was your favorite movie of his, I thought you were talking about Jonze.
Nope. I was referring to Jim Carrey. 23 was also a good one, Yes Man, The Cable Guy. But seeing Joaquin in the previews, I think this is gonna be his moment. Jim had his when in film? I liked him in 23 best I think.

I don't get why people criticize actors when they don't act thrilled for the other nominee. I like seeing real reactions. I expect I would be disappointed if I didn't win too.

Thanks. I was sitting in the theater when the preview for this movie was shown. I thought to myself who the #### would go see this? The preview of a guy looking dreamy eyed at his phone?

I wasn't expecting this to be as good as it was. I saw previews for it and was not gonna run right out to see it but we had another couple we hang out with that suggested it and then insisted we see it with them. I'm glad they did.
