Herm Edwards Fired (1 Viewer)

Per Chris Mad Dog Russo's show on Sirius, Mike Shanahan is the next head coach of the Chiefs. No link yet...

Some have blamed Pioli for waiting so long to fire Edwards, but Pioli was just "Playing to win the game!"

This has to be a good day for Chief fans.

Makes a lot of sense: close to Shanny's nice new house in Denver, he knows the division well enough and Pioli (and Belichick) certainly has a lot of respect for his ability to coach.Good choice; the team will certainly be more dynamic and Shanny won't have to pick any defensive players on his own.

From Peterson and Hermie to Shanahan & Pioli. Talk about an upgrade. It's like going to bed with Rosie O'Donnell and waking up with Adriana Lima.

Any other Coach I saw L.J getting run out of KC. Not quite sure about that now though, he can really be back on the map if Shanny takes over.

I thought Pioli was waiting to interview Haley before hiring Shanny?

guess I'm alone in thinking that Herm, with adequate talent, is a solid HC
I'd be curious to hear why you think he's a solid HC.Seriously.
I think he means that Herm is well-built.
he seems to be a leader of men. players respond to his command.he had playoff teams in NY and in his 1st year with KC
he inheritted those teams
every coach inherits their team

Yeah, but you went to bed with Rosie. That just doesn't wash off.

I really thought that KC was the one place Cowher would go before Pioli was named the GM.

Now, not a snowball's chance in hell.

:coffee: Of course you inherit that first team. The challenge is to then improve it. Or at least not screw it up. Herm couldn't do either-twice. Here's how it went season by season:NYJ 2000 10 6NYJ 2002 9 7NYJ 2003 6 10NYJ 2004 10 6NYJ 2005 4 12KC 2006 9 7KC 2007 4 12KC 2008 2 14Total: 54-74. So his "accomplishment" as a HC was to take two teams with winning records and end up with an overall losing record.

He inheritted two not top teams but top 10? teams. I mean the Jets and Chiefs were very good at that time. His job wasn't necessarily to make the playoffs, that was expected. His job was to go further into the playoffs and win a Supe.I think he did a poor job of that.In NY I thought he got rid of some very good players(that weren't troublemakers) solely to make it his team. That was a relatively new coach ego mistake in my opinion. In KC, the end of an era was coming and it wasn't in his control but in the GMs control. The Chiefs had a lot of older players that were soon to retire. It would have been one of the better GM jobs ever if they could have won a Supe after they lost possible HOF or teamHOF players. I don't hold him too responsible for the collapse at all.In that collapse though is going from (guess) 11 wins to (guess) 4 wins. That's too low. I figure a good coach can finagle more out of his players. I think 6-8 would have kept his job. KC has some exceptional young talent. Many young players aren't ready to produce and are "raw" etc. Keeping that in mind, where are the players that are the other side of that-the few that produce right away? What did he do with them? Losing is contagious and a horrible habit to get used to. That can't be underestimated either. How many picks have been spent on QBs? How many of those QBs are good? Was Huard their best QB? IIRC he was .500 with the Chiefs. .500 not a 2 win QB. If they could win with him why didn't he play him more?(during his tenure, not just 08 injury) To develop a not so good QB? Croyle still hasn't won an NFL game right? Then there's Thigpen who looked horrible and then to Herm's credit he stuck with him and I thought Thigpen looked fairly good at times this season. Did Quinn Gray throw more TD passes than prized youngster Croyle? Do you remember they signed Ingle Martin off the Titans PS early in the season? Yet another QB for the future but....he didn't play. Alot of people liked Ingle in the draft a couple years ago. He's done nothing in the NFL. Totally a project but did they need another project at QB?This is a whole big mess at QB!!!!!!! What NFL team has played musical chairs at QB like that? It can't be to win now because he doesn't play Huard. It can be to develop the youngsters because he's never shown he'll stick with one. What's he doing? I do understand the injuries in 08 what about the rest of his tenure? They have a mishmash at the most important position. Herm doesn't play the youngsters, manage their time right. He's just not doing it right. The number of youngsters that he furtherred their development is far smaller than it could be.

In NY Herm inherited a team that missed the playoffs the 2 seasons before he got there

Why do people defend this guy? He never "played to win the game". He always played to not lose which is why he is a bad head coach. Sure, he seems like a nice guy and a good citizen but so are Mike Nolan and Rod Marinelli.

His first year, Jets were 10-6 finished 3rd in AFC EYear before Jets were 9-7 finished 3rd in AFC EThey were 9-4 under Al Groh, lost their last 3, and just missed the playoffs. Groh did fairly well for a first year coach. He'd resign with the Jets getting a new owner and GM, Parcells resigning, and the opportunity to coach at his alma mater. I'll always be curious though how he would have turned out in the NFL as a coach.

I don't understand why people try to crucify the guy, especially Jets fans. Is he a great coach? No! But he is far from the worst coach that ever held a HC job in the NFL. I think he is a decent coach. Not great, not horrible. Jets fans always say Herm inherited a 'great' team or great situation from Parcelles when he took over. Fact is great teams don't miss the playoffs two years in a row like the Jets did before Herm took over. Yet he led them to the playoffs in 3 of the 5 seasons he was there. I don't understand why Jets fan rip him so much. No other coach in Jets history has let them to the playoffs 3 times period.

Jet fans are making Herm out to be Rich Kotite.

I think Kotite would be better at X's and O's while Herm would be the better motivator.Fused together they might make 1 good coach as long as **** Curl was around.
