I have no idea. Whatever it is, the market will dictate that someone will overpay him. Charles Grant got 7yr, 63mil, 20mil guar. With the cap going up again next year, Smith is probably going to get close to that. Unfortunately Grant >> Smith.
It's a market thing. Consistently solid two-way DE are in short supply. The other reasonable comp is Patrick Kerney, who Smith is similar to in many ways. Smith is a very consistent and underrated run supporter and he's never had a Chuck Smith, John Abraham type to take the pressure off him in pass rush. When he faces a poor OT on a team that doesn't roll help his way, he can be a dominant bull rusher. He's also been extremely durable.Kerney got 6yr, 39mil, but with the cap going up and teams snapping up their own rather than letting them get out on the market, a solid talent is probably going to fetch more than that with the cap going up. It wouldn't shock me to see someone give Smith a contract that looks more like Grant's than Kerney's.As far as him returning, look at it from the Bengals perspective again this offseason. You've got no one on the roster that can step in and play an all-around game. Geathers may not be an impact player, but you still give him the benefit of the doubt because they keep changing his role. Rucker can't do it. Robinson can't do it. The decision will be, as always, can you use the money you would have have paid Smith to improve your defense and replace what Smith provided.I would've loved to see the Bengals bring in a player other than Smith that provided some big play ability and an identity to that defense. There were arguments for Adalius Thomas, but there were also legitimate concerns with age and whether he was a role player and product of the Raven scheme to some extent rather than a driving force there. We'll see.
Justin Smith probably would get Grant type money on the open market. He isn't the greatest, but solid 2 way DEs are tough to find, especially durable ones.
