So, not enough money for a good direwolf battle or, really, scene but we can have 2 talking bears with armor.
The fight will commence soon between the two talking bears. Spoiler alert... one bear won't be able to talk after. So, not enough money for a good direwolf battle or, really, scene but we can have 2 talking bears with armor.
Fwiw, I'm not a book guy but the mom definitely comes across as ill/compromised (mentally) with Will taking care of her rather than the other way around. Maybe it's more so in the books, but that point isn't lost in the show.So good. For those not in the know, the boy we meet in episode 5 with the story line does not take place until the beginning of book 2. One big difference is the way the mom acts in the show. She is "sick" in the books whereas that does not come across in the show. Meaning, Will does whatever he can to keep his mom away from people because there is "danger" around.
Okay, I, as a book reader, just had a different vision of his relationship with his mom. In the books, he has to make an important decision about his mom but I can't tell a timeline because they had a few chapters at the start of book 2 to mesh out their circumstance.Fwiw, I'm not a book guy but the mom definitely comes across as ill/compromised (mentally) with Will taking care of her rather than the other way around. There's definitely a lot more to come with them. I was just trying to point out that the show had done a good job (in the abstract of not having read it) of showing what you mentioned.Okay, I, as a book reader, just had a different vision of his relationship with his mom. All good. I can't tell because I'm not in your shoes so not sure how she is coming across. I'm watching the show Sunday nights via BBC.There's definitely a lot more to come with them. The best I can explain it is that the book has more emotion in it and that hasn’t played out the best so far on screen. A couple big scenes that should have had more emotion just didn’t. One big thing missing, or maybe a non book reader can say otherwise, is the connection between the person and daemon. The daemon is not a pet, of sorts. It is a part of the person and the person is a part of it. It’s like your inner conscious but outside of the body. In the last episode, the intercision event where Lyra and Pan were in the contraption, Lyra should have been falling to Pan with heart breaking love. For whatever reason, the true emotion is lacking so far.So.... this show feels like it's trying to be more epic than it is... if that makes sense. I don't know; I enjoy the world building and the pseudo Catholic church that controls it... but I don't know if something is missing or ......
I'm not saying it's bad. Its not.... I just can't put my finger on what this is yet.
Hmmm...the show explains what you're saying, but you're right- doesn't really show it they're basically talking pets at this point whose lives are attached physically, but doesn't come across as emotionallyThe best I can explain it is that the book has more emotion in it and that hasn’t played out the best so far on screen. Not bad, but entirely meh. They even managed to make a panserbjorn fight anticlimactic.So.... this show feels like it's trying to be more epic than it is... if that makes sense. The first book is pretty meh, imo, anyway. Not much crazy stuff but it does setup the following two books. Hoping the second season (slated for next October, they are done filming it btw) can capture some of the emotion and magic. The third book, possibly more than 8 episodes (only a rumor) is where the show needs to hit a home run. So much barely passable acting (or casting, I can't put my finger on which?) and story telling.
Whatever, I watched it all the way through this season because I read the books a couple times, but it certainly falls way short of expectations. I imagine I'll watch next year if it comes back, but my expectations are dashed.

The payoff is in the third book. This season (book) laid the groundwork for what is to come. The book does have more Lyra in it but word is having kids in acting roles limits how much they can work, therefore, the BBC didn't want shooting schedules to take more time. I hope they took more focus on the kids moving forward because the trilogy is about Lyra and Will. As far as the mom goes... she is a bit loony... I'm talking about Ms. Coulter. Her motivations are not clear right now but will be as the story goes on. Keep watching or read the books because you have till next October.Non-book reader review:
Was not initially impressed with the little girl’s performance. However, either she improved or she grew on me a little.
The ‘Gyptians are the most interesting characters as a group by far.
Not a fan of the acting job or the way the character is written or whatever, but the mom character is a train wreck.
The “real” world scenes were sooooper boring.
could have used a lot more of the “daemons” I think.
I found it enjoyable enough and will definitely watch the next season (first episode or so was really slow to draw me in though.).
