Holiday traditions - what's yours? (1 Viewer)

Did a search and didnt see a topic devoted to all year round traditions out there - after a great Thxgiving I sat back and thought about all the traditions we have and how long they've been going on.....would love to see what holidays you have for traditions and the other ones people do....

New Years - last 15 yrs the same - out for dinner (varies)....go to the same party at a neighbors until 11pm then ring in new year at home with neighbors

Fat Tuesday - love mardi gras - past few years we've made a tradition of making jumbalaya with King Cake....whoever finds the plastic toy baby in their slice buys the cake next year

St Pattys day - corned beef...lots of beer...irish music during dinner!

Memorial Day - always at the beach

4th of July - always our town's fireworks

Labor Day - home getting ready for school - try to relax but school and end of summer makes it always bittersweet

Halloween - we are in a huge trick or treating zone so we have a big party every year and dress up in costumes have a band play....

Thxgiving - host, fry a turkey and watch trains, planes and automobiles

Christmas Eve - church, dinner at same restaurant then I read night before Christmas to kids

Christmas - Presents then at my parents - watch A Christmas Story every year before bed.

Kids were starting to complain yesterday, especially watching the Trains and Planes saying they've seen it a hundred times.....I explained the tradition and they grudgingly watched....by the "those aren't pillows!!!!!" scene we were all rolling on the floor laughing and they were talking about having the same viewing when they have their own kids....

Anyway - pulled the heartstrings a bit - would love to see some others out there....always looking to add to the fun!!

Thanksgiving - eating my feelings

Christmas - eating my feelings

New Years - drinking my feelings

Presidents Day - buying a new mattress to cry on

Mardi Gras - Tuesday fat persons group

St Paddy's Day - ####in' RULES!!

Memorial Day - burying my feelings

Independence Day - i explode

Labor Day - work on my feelings

Halloween - hide behind my feelings and pop out at strangers. jail

New Years - We have our best friends over for games with the kids.  Someone makes something good to eat.  Barely make it to the NY ball drop (we are in central time) then the kids are done and we all crash.

Memorial Day - Last few years, normally yard work.

4th of July - Can't stand fireworks.  Usually avoid, but the last couple of years we have a fire in our portable fire pit in the driveway and watch the few shows we can see in the distance.

Labor Day - Chill.

Halloween - Get together with same family as New Years.  Wives take the kids out to trick or treat (fewer kids going each year).  I stay back with the other dad, have a fire in the portable fire pit, drink some rum and cokes, and hand out candy to the kids that come by.  Good times.

Thxgiving - Where we eat every year changed, but I always try to watch Trains, Planes and Autos.  Forgot last night.  Will need to watch tonight.

Christmas Eve - Church.  Sometimes exchange presents with the in laws.  Sometimes nothing.

Christmas - Presents with the kids in the am.  Chill for a while.  Go down to my parents where my siblings and their kids all meet.  More presents.  Good meal made by my mom.

Growing up my family always watched Scrooged on Christmas Eve.  It came out when I was 8 and I appreciated it more each year as my humor matured.  Last year (now 36) was the first time we didn't do it, just couldn't coordinate everyone's schedules.

Back in the day my parents were bible thumpers and Halloween was obviously of the devil.  So I never actually dressed up and trick-or-treated as a kid.  To avoid the awkwardness of continually answering the door on that evening and "explaining" to me why we weren't participating in such heathenism, they took my brother and I for mini-golf each Halloween.  By the time they snapped out of their zealous I was in high school and brother off to college.  We actually kept the tradition going until grandkids showed up...this coupled with Scrooged as a xmas eve tradition doesn't seem to match, but hey, the family is odd like that and I love 'em nonetheless

23rd of Dec at a friend's house. Arrive at noon. Get hammered on glögg and beer. Cook and eat traditional Danish X-mas food. Have great conversations with much laughter and general merriment. Been going for the past 30 years (every year I have been in Denmark for X-mas, that is, there were a few I missed when I lived in Brazil)

Winter Solstice is the best day of the year.  At noon the whole family gathers for the blood sacrifice.  Then we burn our defeated enemies in a wicker cage.  Their screams of agony ensure that the days will get longer and warmer. Then comes the celebration of the body,  which is basically a giant orgy.  Then we eat pumpkin pie and drink coffee.  It's a great holiday.

Can't think of many. We've made pulled pork for the past few Super Bowls. We usually plan a vacation around Memorial Day. That's about it.

St. Patrick's Day - I will go on record to say this is the best birthday ever.  Everyone wants to party with you on St. Patrick's Day.  Usually get together with another family early for great Corned Beef and cabbage.  Pick up Irish Soda and Gouda breads at the local bakery.  Then we're off to celebrate at one of the Irish pubs.  If there's a great concert in LA we'll go party downtown and then head to the concert (Springsteen this year), then head to Bergins or some other joint afterwards.

Easter - usually one of the days I try to go to church (definitely a C&E guy the past several years as my kids are older) and then a great brunch.

Memorial Day - usually I'll go big on the smoker.  Briskets, pulled pork, etc.  That's on Monday.  On Tuesday am I leave for 5 days in Palm Springs for annual 24 guy golf tourney.

4th of July - BBQ and then our entire neighborhood gathers on a street with chairs to watch the fireworks going off 2 blocks away.  Perfect view up on the hill.

Labor Day - another BBQ day, head to concert in the park.  Usually close to our fantasy football draft.  I've hosted the last 3 years and put on a big spread, but we've also done Vegas. Vegas in 2017.

Halloween - not the biggest day for us.  But passing out a lot of king size bars to the little chilrens

Thanksgiving - usually at my sister in law's house.  Big, multi-generational gathering of up to 30.  Full on feast.  Great time

Christmas week - starts usually on the 21st or so.  Big golf outing at Pelican Hill.  Definitely a fun round, not uncommon for the group in front of you to leave a bottle of Redbreast on the tee box.  Then we go to the host's house in Newport for a feast.  He typically throws massive tomahawks on the oak grill and some big wines come out.  Definite boys day out before we do the family thing.  Sometime that week we'll drop off toys at the fire station.  Something I've done since my kids were little and I think gave them a great perspective. They each go pick out really cool gifts that a boy or girl would like and they personally give it to the firemen.  Bikes, etc.  On the 23rd we have our extended family gathering that we rotate hosting.  Just having cocktails, great food, conversation, and Santa always makes an appearance.  Christmas Eve is just us.  Often do the C of the C&E thing.  Christmas morning I do a big brunch after opening presents.  Watch A Christmas Story. Then I get to work with a smoked prime rib, Savannah Chop House creamed corn, garlic mashed, green beans and a rosemary roll wreath.

New Years Eve - fairly low key.  Not my favorite holiday.  Don't like to be out with people that have a license to be stupid.  So may get together with another family and have a good meal (Costco crab legs are common) with some cocktails but I never make it to midnight anymore.

New Year's Day - Often play golf then watch football.

Only major one is the Summer Soltice -- wife and I sacrifice a calf to the god Mithra, cover ourselves in its blood and make love for 48 hours straight.

Would you mind sharing your Smoked Prime Rib recipe?  Have a BGE and a Traegar and looking to change it up this Christmas.

Christmas.. Prime Rib Dinner on Christmas Eve, followed by Lefse and Breakfast Sausage on Christmas Morning :)

Christmas eve we have a traditional "Double Dice" game...

We buy 15 to 20 Small gifts ( Hand warmers, Snacks, Kitchen tools, etc..) wrap each one and place all of them in a big pile in the middle of the room.

Everyone takes turns rolling two dice and if you get doubles you grab a gift..
Once all gifts are nabbed, you set a 3 minute timer and if a person rolls doubles they get to steal a gift from someone else.

Once the timer goes off you open gifts.. A lot of fun and done for less then $50
