Honeycrisp Apples (1 Viewer)

Just got back from Door County and they grown them there, $.99 lb if you pick your own. I bought them for $1.99/lb.

Also bought a caramel apple made with one...... I thought I died and went to heaven.

I have been checking everywhere around here for them and haven't found any yet. I am hoping they will have them soon...I love these things!!!

Friends of mine are going up there this weekend. I'll get you a bag

sweet apple perfection is in my mouth right now

Found them at the local orchard last weekend and just trying one now. I know why I look foward to these thing all year! $2.99 lb here

I bought some of these apples yesterday after having seen the comments in this thread.

I gotta say, these apples were pretty spectacular. I generally always eat Granny Smith apples because I like the tart factor, but these took the tart factor and added a sweetness that made for the perfectly balanced apple.

I bought 3 apples yesterday, ate two of them, and had to force myself not to eat the third. I'm going to have to stop by and pick some more up today.

Just saw them at Target yesterday for $2.49/lb. How much do the rest of you pay? They usually lower the price a little later in the season, I think they may have been on sale last year for .99/lb.Two down, three to go before I have to re-stock.Has anyone found or tried the SweeTango apple? The HoneyCrisp successor? I would be interested in hearing how it compares.
Still no report on the SweeTango? Come on FBG's, you're really letting me down. I was sure a MSP-based FBG could get their hands on one.

Furley is reported to have eaten one.

WAIT.Are you referring to the Honey Crisp or the SweeTango?I'm as confused as Wolf Blitzer trying to figure out how the boy went from the balloon to the box in the attic.

***OFFICIAL EOMMAN'S REVIEW OF HONEYCRISP APPLES***

I was shopping in WalMart, yeah, I said WalMart, and noticed that they had these for $2.49/lb. Seeing how expensive they were, I immediately thought of this thread and how some people had food orgasms just thinking about these apples. So, I bought 3 of them and said "What the heck". The first thing you'll notice is the size of the apple. Mine are close to the size of a grapefruit when "normal" apples are more like the size of a smaller orange. Think of it as an apple on steroids. I took a bite and it definitely had a good texture/crisp to it. It's what I would think an apple should feel like when you bite into it. Also, the bites came off in nice, big pieces. It wasn't like you bite into it and have a bunch of apple pieces in your mouth. I can see these apples holding up well in a pie maybe. Now for the taste......I would say that they tasted pretty damn good. They aren't the sweetest apple in the world (I'd say Washington, the really shiny dark red ones, are sweeter), but they have a good mix of sweet/tartness. Another plus is the fact they aren't really juicy. I hate biting into an apple and getting apple juice all over my shirt.

Overall, I'd give Honeycrisp Apples an 8 on a 1 to 10 scale. The biggest knock on them being the price.

I don't get the love for these things in this thread. Much better apples out there.
They're about the same as a gala, braeburn, etc. I don't really get it either.
Like anything, of course it's subjective and based on individual taste. I just think that more people favor the taste that Honey Crisp has than those that like the others. I also think that Honey Crisp apples store much better than Gala, Braburn et al. This past winter/spring I had some pretty mealy and dry apples whereas the Honey Crisp tasted like the day I bought them.If I had a choice between season fresh Braeburn, Gala, Fuji, etc., I probably would still favor the Honey Crisp.

bought 3 types of apples at a farmer's market last weekend:

Honeycrisp

Ambrosia

Swiss Gourmet

the honeycrisp were kind of boring, but the other two were some of the best I've ever had.

Ambrosia

Swiss Gourmet

Just something else I thought of while reading through this thread. Take notice of where your apples are from. I have found that the Washington Honey Crisp apples are far superior to the New York Honey Crisp. The Washington apples were a little sweeter and crisper than the ones that I have found from NY. Not sure why that is but just something I have noticed.

No they aren't.There is something special about these. Better combination of sweet and tart, extra juicy and the crispest apple ever. You guys either don't really like apples or your getting bad batches.

Pack, if you get anymore, let me know and I'll Paypal you the $$ to ship me a few to try. :lmao:

The local Target still had some in stock for $1.49 so I had to buy about a dozen yesterday. Already I think I am at least three into that dozen.

I'm pissed off that I can't get Georgia peaches in Florida. I moved down here 6 months ago from Atlanta and saw them in stores for a week, that's it. Now the only peaches I can get are from California and they are clearly less desirable. Plus, the oranges in the stores are from South Africa. WTF? I live in Florida now and the oranges are from SA? Seriously?

MOP, can I get some local knowledge of the fruit scene down here?

I'm seriously doubting that I'm going to be finding Honeycrisp apples come September.

Signed,

Florida - the only place you have to go north to get the the South

Don't they grow stuff locally down there? I buy as much as I can from the orchard just up the road from us. Peaches right now, Honeycrisps next month.

Well that's what you would think now, huh? It's not like I am living in Phoenix and expecting locally grown oranges, it's Florida for goodness sake. This place invented oranges! There's a great organic farmers market on Saturdays that has great locally grown stuff but man, it's even MORE expensive than what I find at Whole Paycheck. I can drive 25-30 minutes out of the city and probably find a local produce stand with locally grown stuff but I was thinking that Publix would source some of that locally considering the location. Who knows, maybe I'm not looking at the right places. Dunno yet.

Hi Senor,Pretty sure MOP, like the rest of the FBG staff, is pretty busy right now with the season kicking off. Hopefully he'll get a chance to pop in soon though and drop some produce knowledge.

Cheers and have a great season!
