House of the dragon. Game on! (3 Viewers)

Ok still not sure how I don't know. What Kings guard were they replacing? Daemon wasn't in the guard ....
Think at the council meeting they said one of the guards died in their sleep
The lead Kings guard guy, the one attached to the Kings hip at all times, is who died. That’s why she picked a guy who been in actual battle as that’s who she wanted at her dads side.

I thought that was the guy already with him. The big older guy.....I guess I was just wondering if we saw him in the first episode

I get why she picked who she picked but I was just lost how/who exactly died when they were talking about ir

The scene on the bridge with showdown for the egg and general deviant behavior by brother was excellent.
If you don't get excited about dragons coming out of the clouds, this show isn't for you.
Do the dragons have a code where they won’t fight each other no matter what?
Just wondering with the bridge scene.

Also, my wife thinks “Dracarius” is a word that means to order fire. I think it’s the name of the dragon and that he was old AF in the Khaleesi years. Who’s right?

I thought it was Dracaris and was always a shoot a flame at something or someone.

I’m sure dragons will fight. I’m sure some get close if like in GOT they grow up together/twins or are all loyal to one person. I can’t imagine that two dragons who grew up under different people wouldn’t fight to protect theirs. They are smart so I’d also imagine that they might tuck and run if they know they can’t win versus fight to their death.

Dracarys is a valyrian word that is the command for a dragon to spew flames. There are no dragons and have not been any for some time by the time we get to the Khaleesi years . . . .

Pretty sure she digs him too.

Khaleesi's dragons were the ones that hatched when she came out of the flames at Drogo's funeral pyre.

This.

still gives me teh chills:

Holy ****ing **** that intro was amazing
I liked it but WTF did it mean? I know the GOT map was obvious but I had no idea if I should have gotten what it was or not.

Blood running through the streets of Kings Landing?
I thought it was blood running through the streets of the stone model of Valyria that the king was building (wasn't that what he was building?) , and as someone above mentioned, twisting/crossing as the family tree got a bit jumbled. I think the flipping medallions were sigils but maybe we don't even know who all those are yet (characters/houses to be introduced later).

This is almost as bad as "Wait... Better Call Saul is a prequel to BB?"

Is it just too much to ask for the damn map back??

Finally watched it. Pretty good. Not as compelling as the GOT pilot, but I can see this being a good show.

One thing that does have me mad (at the GOT ending) is that it really does appear that the White Walkers are supposed to have been a much bigger story than how GOT treated it in the final season. The whole Prince Who Was Promised and the dragons basically did not matter in the war or final battle with the WW and that feels like a huge miss that will differ greatly in the books/intended story of A Song of Ice and Fire.
Agreed. And I have no idea how a prequel can somewhat fix this, though. It's a shame. They probably just need to stay away from these plot points after how badly they were botched in the last couple of seasons.
I do wonder if say after 10 years have passed and Martin finishes those two books ( :fishing: ) if HBO will re-cast and show those final books. Could just name each series after each book. This is such a cash cow for them and GoT ending was so poorly conceived and Martin wanted 10 seasons - it’s conceivable.

They could even sell it as this is the ending George Martin wanted.
I won't gum this thread up with book stuff cause NO BOOKS but will bump the book thread with something I came across this weekend that addresses the above.

First episode was okay. This one felt more like early GOT. I’m in
Second episode was much better, as we now have some character development and a direction.
Agreed. Really, really liked the second episode. Reminded me of some of the episodes from earlier seasons of GOT where they really set up the conflict and character development.

Plus, you know, dragons in fog.

Very impressed so far. The drama is exceptional considering we're only 2 episodes in. Credit to the casting director.

I don't know if it was intentional, but the underlying women's power theme of the bridge scene was awesome. Subtle, but powerful.

Apparently the bridge scene was entirely created and scripted by the television writers. Taken from just a few sentences in the books - Daemon stole an egg; King was pissed off; then he gave it back. There is a lot going on there imo. She is technically the Lord of Dragonstone at that time, but her uncle has taken his seat there (I think he was ordered to go to his wife in the Vale), the two dragons, Otto Hightower being no more than a nuisance and the short conversation they had in Valeyrian - great scene.

The Otto character is great. You can tell the King trusts him but he shouldnt as he clearly has his own motivations. Sneaky.

Yeah, there was a quick scene in the first ep where he quietly sent a raven to Oldtown. Since anyone who was anyone was at the tournament, it seems like it wasn't just about the death of the Queen and her son.

I do think Daemon and Otto could use a bit more fleshing out as characters.
Otto reminds me of Ned in that you know he’s going to have a horrible ending and not realize why when everyone else can see it. Daemon is going to whack him or Corlys will whack him and Daemon will whack Corlys. Both Otto and Corlys don’t see to get that they are pulling on some strings to get more powerful and there is an anvil about to smash them. Otto doesn’t get the target he painted on his back getting his daughter married to the king and Corlys actually thinks he can control Daemon and that Daemon would side with him over family. The king is a stooge so pretty sure he’ll be out of the picture at some point but I don’t think Daemon would ever harm his niece.

Just an FYI, I don’t know the Targaryen bloodline or read the books so complete conjecture. Glad that episode 2 was way better than the 1, should be a fun ride.

I think the King is getting set up to die soon. Perhaps by his infection(s) but in a way that makes it looks suspect, perhaps by his new bodyguard knight. Chaos will ensue and I am here for it.
His new knight isn’t going to kill him. He is to Rhaenyra as Daario was to Daenerys. He’ll likely be her confidant/lover at some point. That said, I think it’s a given that the King is going to die soon. Too much chaos would not happen if he just lives and has an heir, etc. If he does die it’s a free for all.

I worded it poorly. I meant that it may end up looking like the bodyguard kills him, though it was the infection. Agreed tho. I'm ready for it.

I haven't read anything about the series but it wouldn't shock me at all to see them wed given the Targaryen propensity to marry within to keep the bloodline pure.

Yeah there’s a sick attraction thing going on

Draft Kings has a little “pool” (really just a small group of questions) for tonight’s episode….

Will we see any crabs?

Will there be a wedding?

Will there be a battle scene?

Will we see the dragon Vhagar?

Will Daemon mount Caraxes?

Will Rhaenyra mount Syrax?

Will any of the main characters die in tonight’s episode?

Will Daemon and Viserys meet face to face?

Don't get used to the actors just yet...four are being recast as the time line jumps 10 years in upcoming episodes...

Here are the 4 being recast, and when, if you wanna know:

I was certainly entertained tonight, (which is mostly the point) but this is the sort of thing I was afraid of with the time jumps (which I understand are needed to advance the ages of the younger characters so that plot points make sense)

They made a whole big deal about the Crab Feeder and set him up as the main villain for the early part of the show. But because they had to jump the plot forward 3 years (in order the King's son to be conceived, born and survive infancy)....his story basically became him waging an off-camera guerilla war of opportunity, running and hiding in a cave when a dragon showed up and then getting killed off-camera by Daemon. Annnnnnd....now he's dead and irrelevant.

Just have a feeling this is going to be a pattern....lots of petty distractions/side plots that only exist to stir up little political dramas between the main characters. Just seems like we're probably just mostly treading water until the king bites the dust. (Guessing that happens by the end of the season to set up season 2)

Not really a spoiler because we saw the cat in the last episode......but does the Crab Eater have greyscale? He looked like it...and I thought those cataract eyes are a symptom as well?

Looks like they're gonna be making some BIG time jumps from episode to episode. This one was set 6 months after last week and based on next week's preview we're moving forward at least another year next week (if not closer to 2 years).

They are really speeding through the build-up. Ain't nobody got no patience for world-building.
To a certain degree we kind of already know stuff. I think the world building will be minimal because of the scope. No idea if 🦀 guy was in the books but he seems like a McGuffin to get Daemon and Night Court together. Something tells me that Daemon may pull the rug on Night Court.
@TLEF316 Definitely seemed like that he wouldn’t last long or be important at all. Non-story to get Daemon with Corlys on the opposite side of Viserys.

I'm a devout Lord of the Rings nerd, but House of Dragon is far better than the mess they've got on Amazon. Really like this Dragon show.
Disagree wholeheartedly. I like both and to be honest they are completely different shows. It’s like comparing the Avengers (not the new stuff which has been a bit meh) and The Boys. I loved the Rings of Power episodes. Not sure I understand the need to compare, I just think we’re lucky to just be starting a multi-year journey with both. I’m not rooting for one and hoping the other fails.

Agreed. I’m bored of stupid elves and dwarves. It’s well done production-wise but it just lulls me to sleep.

I asked my wife if she wanted to watch and she asked, “More dwarves and orcs? No thanks!”
