House of the dragon. Game on! (1 Viewer)

I get the rationale of the episode, but did we need 10 minutes of taking armor off piece by piece?
I was way more creeped out by those scenes with her (and Alicent) than the ones with Arya and Gendry. Arya was more of a we remember how young she was but she looked grown up so to speak. Alicent and Rhaenyra still look like teens compared to Dr. Who, Mr. Covered in Sores and Leo.

The uncle and niece scene made my skin crawl. She just looks so young, it actually bothered me, even the next part as well. Wasn’t my favorite episode so far, although the hand getting pushed out wasn’t bad. We still don’t really have a good idea what Daemon even wants but it was interesting to see his queen was basically working for Hightower all along.

His queen was working for Hightower?
Did you miss the part where she was waking Daemon up from his hangover? During that scene, the boy who told Hightower about the princess and Daemon came down the stairs and handed Daemon’s queen some money. I took that as her being Hightower’s pawn, maybe since the beginning of her relationship with Daemon. Very Littlefinger of him TBH and based on her reaction to not wanting kids and not wanting to ever be in harm’s way, it makes more sense that she’s been playing Daemon for a while.
I didn't notice the kid there. Is that what happened?

Yeah, the boy was sitting on the steps outside the brothel when Rhaenyra left.

they were doing a great job of not telling us if daemon is good or bad but now i just think he is a creeper and bad take that to the bank brohans

He is and TBH, his finishing move appears to be broken. I seem to remember him bolting from his hoe before the ending in the 1st episode.

I loved it. So many great lines and scenes and a great set up for what’s to come. The stroll through the king’s landing theater district at the hour of the owl was fantastic.

I liked it too. The cousin loving scene was cringy but it's also what the Targaryens are kinda known for. The dismantling of the knight was also a waste of screen time IMO but aside from that I enjoyed it.

Yes, go back and watch to confirm but after he spilled the hangover cure, she was walking out and the kid came down and gave her money. I don’t see any other meaning because it was just after Hightower gave the kid money for his info. I assume that it is supposed to 100% tie her to being paid by Hightower. I took some liberties because of her saying she wants no part in kids as a confirmation that she’s been in the relationship due to Hightower. Opposite of say Rob Stark’s lady who got knocked up right away although she was not a whore. Anyway, I would recommend that you rewatch the end of that scene.
Alternate theory is that Daemon set the entire thing up. A ploy to try and marry Rhanera and split Otto from the king. The boy was working for Mysaria, not Otto.

While possible, seems like the scenes we’ve seen them together, including this one, don’t point to him having thought it all out. Also, why would the boy give her money. If he’s working for her, she’d pay him and she wouldn’t take part of his Otto payment. We know Otto plotted his daughter getting close to the king so we know Otto has his spies. Daemon hasn’t done anything close to that. It took him getting pissed at his brother to finally work out a trap for 🦀.

This show suffers from not having likeable or colorful characters. Episode 4 was incredibly average.
This is a good observation. We're rewatching GoT and there are so many characters to really like or really hate. Everyone in HotD, on the other hand, is pretty uninspiring in comparison.
Yeah so far no one to root for OR hate.

So far, I've sort of had to force myself to stay engaged, which doesn't bode well.

I've watched it again, and I still don't understand the whole Uncle / Niece / secret passage / weird night out / "did they or didn't they?" aspect of the story. Came out of nowhere, seemed to go nowhere, but then she comes staggering home all revved up and Sir she-kinda-likes-him-and-he's-available is outside her door, then after the armor peeling some money changes hands, and... what did I just watch? I don't mind a "huh?" plot point that gets explained later, but this one seems a little too abstract.

It definitely came out of nowhere and took to long to resolve. I think the whole point of it was to tell us how she ends up marrying Laenor and to get rid of Otto.

Honestly, I have no idea where this story is going but so far there doesnt seem to be any intrigue nor "good" guys or "bad" guys. It just feels like a history lesson at this point. Im not hating the show by any means but it doesnt feel must watch. I typically wait a few days to watch it. Ill give it more time.

Pretty sure we're still being spoon-fed backstory filler. We kinda know where the story is going and they have at least two seasons to tell it. The speed of the show will be adjusted by how many seasons they want to drag it out.
I dont (please dont spoil if this is a book thing).

That’s kinda what I’m thinking. This is all backstory until they time warp ahead and the meat of the story comes out.

I would think most non-book readers are in the same boat - no way to tell where its going from here. We know Martin loves to lead his readers down a path of expectations then pull the rug out - although I guess the source material for this one is less of a story and more of a "historical account" or somesuch.

Regarding episode 4, I listened to a podcast and the non-book reader was shocked, stunned, disgusted and confused by the uncle / niece scene, whereas it was essentially SOP for the person with the lore background. She said it didn't make her list of top 5 moments in the episode. I was kind of the same - we know the Targ culture and history, we've seen it before and we've seen the chemistry between these two. They pretty much telegraphed it in the prior episodes and in the scenes leading up to it, so really NBD for me as a non-book viewer.

It seemed like Daemon's motivation became clearer after his conversation with the king. However, what drove Rhaenyra to be into it? A '**** you' to her father who was looking to sully herself?

Was the concoction the maester brought to her at the end a medieval morning after pill?

Also, as joba pointed out, some of us haven't read the book and are having to ingest spoilers.

I thought she was a virgin until then, then she got "caught up in it"..... Could be way wrong

That's what I thought the tea was for

Dont really think incest was the issue and I dont think she was trying to give her father a **** you. She does seem to love him. I think she was just a young, horny girl who found an easy path to getting off. Yes, the concoction was a morning after pill.

also i know it is desert like a dry sandy place but i think it would be cooler if your name was dessert power like dude that brohan is all hopped up on strawberry pie and ready to rumble take that to the bank bromigos

They've mentioned a few times about the Targaryen's liking to keep the blood line pure so that's not a spoiler. Creepy as hell especially when one of the participants look like a child but not a spoiler.

The source material is actually a historical accounting. So that makes sense.

I did not read Fire and Blood, and wouldn't think of posting spoilers. I was more thinking how Shireen Baratheon outlined the story during GOT. It wasn't a big part of the story so many have probably forgotten it.

I mean I didn’t read any of the books but it’s pretty obvious to see (especially with the story warping 20 years or so forward) that there’s going to be a play for the throne between Rhaenyra and her younger brother. They pretty much set that up in the play she watched before getting felt up by her uncle.

You ever know a teenage girl who thinks her parents are idiots? In other words, ever know a teenager? That’s her motivation, at least in part. She’s also pretty smart and is trying to think ahead to consolidating her power. That’s my personal take on it

But she isn't his queen, he's married to some chick in the Vale. I believe they are "estranged" though. This one is his whore, whom he wants to marry, ala Tyrion. And I also took that as she was an informant for Hightower, it's kind of cool that we have a similar little bird network in HoD.

Some things to add here. She's defiant of her father's quest to find a suitor. She then has a conversation with Alicent where she laments she doesn't want to just be a vessel for a child. That resonates greatly with the queen since she's nothing more than a child bearing pawn herself. Then we get the sex scenes where Rhaenyra happily seduces the knight juxtaposed with Alicent having a not so grand time under the king. The episode closes with Rhaenyra seemingly contemplating whether to take the tea. All this adds up to me to be about wanting to control her destiny.

Fun Fact - if anyone wants to know why they spent 2 minutes disrobing the knight, it's because it was directed by a woman. :D
Not so Fun Fact - The actress who plays Alicent was only 17 when that scene was filmed.

That's the one that will play the older version of her when they jump ahead in time.
The current Alicent is 19.

This show has all the scheming of the original, but none of the fun. I'd kill for one really great personality.

Agreed for the most part. And now they're losing Alcock, who probably had the most charisma out of anyone in the cast (outside of Smith).

It really just seems like almost everyone is a far less interesting version of a character from GOT's.

By the looks of next week's preview, we're now going to "meet" a bunch of new characters post time-jump. We'll see how that goes.

Its perfectly good television and there have been some good moments...but it hasn't grabbed me at all.

Nice episode. I do think the big moral of this whole thing when it ends is going to be kind of "Viserys...yeah he was milktoast and boring...but WE HAD A GOOD THING! AND YOU GUYS SCREWED IT UP!!!!!"

I do think Daemon and Otto could use a bit more fleshing out as characters.
Otto reminds me of Ned in that you know he’s going to have a horrible ending and not realize why when everyone else can see it. Daemon is going to whack him or Corlys will whack him and Daemon will whack Corlys. Both Otto and Corlys don’t see to get that they are pulling on some strings to get more powerful and there is an anvil about to smash them. Otto doesn’t get the target he painted on his back getting his daughter married to the king and Corlys actually thinks he can control Daemon and that Daemon would side with him over family. The king is a stooge so pretty sure he’ll be out of the picture at some point but I don’t think Daemon would ever harm his niece.

Just an FYI, I don’t know the Targaryen bloodline or read the books so complete conjecture. Glad that episode 2 was way better than the 1, should be a fun ride.
I haven't read anything about the series but it wouldn't shock me at all to see them wed given the Targaryen propensity to marry within to keep the bloodline pure.

Yeah there’s a sick attraction thing going on

Called it.
