Housing While Black (3 Viewers)

You guys crack me up. You can reinforce each other's arguments as much as you want, but NOTHING will ever justify Gates being arrested. It was a ridiculous arrest. Your attempts to defend it have been almost as ridiculous as the arrest itself. I'm pretty sure that if I were an African American, I would assume racism: given the history, why not? But having heard the cop, I want to give him the benefit of the doubt. It was still a terrible arrest. And stupid.
You did already assume racism in your first post in this thread. I am not going to dig through the thread to find it, but if I remember it correctly you were 100% sure it was racism. So now you are 100% certain that nothing will ever justify the arrest, but you are going to give the cop the benefit of the doubt on the racism part now. The funniest part is you try to make everyone believe that you are some open-minded centrist that waits on facts to make up your mind about things, but you talk in absolutes as much or more than anyone in the FFA.
I don't try to make anyone believe anything. I am a centrist about many things, but I would never define myself that way. I do like to think of myself as open-minded. Sometimes.
:bs:You post 3 or 4 times a day about how conservatives are knee jerk this and liberals are knee jerk that, but us open-minded people in the middle are thoughtful. You do try to paint yourself as a thoughtful centrist and everyone that doesn't think like you is just a rabid conservative/liberal and are blinded by party allegiance. There are plenty of posts/threads were you really are thoughtful and bring good points and conversation to the table, but then you turn right around in a different thread/post and accuse anyone that doesn't agree with you of not thinking for themselves, are ignorant or various isms.Edit: Because I haven't finished my coffee yet and it didn't make sense even to me. :bag:

"YES SIR.... THANK YOU SIR.... YES SIR".... It's as if this guy is your master...And that goes for whatever color or race you are - You Bow to the police and that is that.. They have an incredibly tough and stressful job and any call could be the next disaster - so, BOW and SHUT UP.
You are the disease, not the cure.Stand up for your rights people, #### the man. Just because some high school nerd went to a two year cop program and now carries a gun does not mean you have to kiss his ###. Quite the opposite acutally.
REALLY... Good luck with that.... I'll continue to bow in their presense and hope to keep any discourse with a police office to the minimum, allowing him to go on his way and do his best to help keep us all safe....
I have had damn good luck with it. I only crack my window enough to hand them my id and car info, I don't respond to any questions. Sign the stupid ticket and challenge it in court, switch the court date, 9/10 times the cop doesn't show and the ticket gets thrown out.You get what you earn in this country, ain't that right?
Ahhh.. so you don't yell at cops, insult them, call them racist, or bring their mother into the conversation?
No, but he should definitely start, I mean, don't let the man walk all over you, don't let common decency get in the way of you excercising your right to be a dooshbag. Hell, insult the man's ethnicity, religous beliefs, call him a homosexual, it's all good baby let's support the 1st ammendment! WOOOOH!!!

:lmao: yep-- seems we've got ourselves an internet tough guy.. :lmao:

I don't think this changes much, but the lady who called mentioned suitcases and that she was unsure they were really trying to break in. She also tried everything she could not to mention race.

Here's what she said when pressed for a description:

"Um, well, there were two larger men," Whalen says. "One looked kind of Hispanic, but I'm not really sure. And the other one entered and I didn't see what he looked like at all. I just saw it from a distance and this older woman was worried, thinking, 'Someone's been breaking in someone's house. They've been barging in.'"

As of now there is no evidence suggesting this occurred in the Gates' case either, other than the words of the cop. Yelling is not against the law, in case you didn't know that.

Seriously though, if you truly believe what you spew, and aren't just a blowhard, actually do it.Be as big of an uncooperative doosh to the next cop you have a run in with.Report back.DO IT.

As I have already said, I already DO IT. I hand them my id and don't say a word after that. Pisses them off to no end, but there is nothing they can do since they have nothing on me in the first place; which is the point by the way. Why should I bow down to cops when I have done nothing wrong or if I am speeding just give me the ticket and shut the hell up. I don't need the cops insight into why it is wrong to speed, write the ticket and go away. I will do my fighting with someone who can actually do something about it, i.e., the judge. As I tell my classes every year, stand up for rights and don't take #### from cops. And record everything!!!! I have been thinking of putting a camera in my rig, just in case, as I know it is only a matter of time . . .

9/10 times? How many times you been pulled over/been to court? Maybe you should try obeying the law more often.

I'm curious. I thought you where a Philosohy Prof. Why would a Philosophy Prof be holding forth to his class on procedures for interacting with police? Do you define what you mean by not taking "####" from cops? Do you ever consider that your advice and passion may actually get these kids in greater trouble or actually contribute to them getting hurt?

Sounds like you clearly DO need to listen to what the cop says ... and, in my opinion, have a lot of growing up to do.Police have better things to do than waste their time chasing around a guy who couldn't care less about speeding and it's consequences. If this is truly your behavior, with any luck a judge will catch on to your shenanigans one of these days and just yank your license.

I ground my philosophical accounts in real life experiences. Dealing with the law and asking what law is as well as how it is enforced is totally in play. As to how they consider my "advice," it is no different than someone telling them to obey the law and be a good little citizen, it is all a matter of experience. All I stress is that they should know their local laws as fully as possible and not to take crap from cops who often know less about the law they then will with a bit of research.I call that a sound education.

Can't win for losing can I.

That's fine, but the example you've given (being a jerk to cops who correctly pulled you over for speeding) don't support the lesson you're trying to impart. I've been pulled over lots of times for speeding and various other traffic infractions. Every single time except one, the cop who pulled me over was nothing but courteous and sometimes even friendly. The lone exception was a dip#### UPD officer, but I've never once interacted with a city policeman, sherrif, or state trooper who ever gave me any crap. These guys are human beings just like me, so I'm not sure why I'm supposed to go out of my way to make their jobs more difficult or stressful than they already are.

I think Gigantomachia's arguments against the police are most likely misplaced. He seems to be both anticipating and willing to reciprocate a hostility which is unwarranted. The police really do protect and serve most of us, and we should be grateful, and cooperate as much as possible, IMO.

But as I wrote before, unfortunately this does NOT apply to African-Americans. The majority, according to polling past and present, view the police in a negative way, with much justification. They continue to have to endure mistreatment and humiliation which would be unthinkable to most of us. The poster who advised earlier that Blacks just keep their mouth shut and obey- this sort of advice is extremely distasteful to many young African-Americans, who have been given the same advice by elders they consider servile to white authority.

This is why, within the Black community (from what I have read) Henry Gates is more admired than ever. He had the guts to stand up to the police and argue with him. Meanwhile, many are apparently critical of Obama's "calibrating" on this subject. They think it's weak and political.

I thought you were the Pulse of the Hispanic Community?

So whats the take on the fact that the woman who called in did not mention black guys? Is Crowley's credibility shot? (I read the first 15 pages of this thread and too damn lazy to read the rest).

Well I'm glad it's fair for blacks to harbor prejudices against cops, but not okay for cops to have prejudices against blacks.Good to know there is no hypocrisy. Thanks for clearing it up.

What fun is that?
More fun than wasting time fighting tickets in court.
I don't consider it a waste of time. Better than watching TV.
So the 5 minutes you gained by speeding is worth more than the hours spent in court?
Really no point in trying to engage these people when they get like this.
I usually don't bother but had some free time to play around with.

All I stress is that they should know their local laws as fully as possible and not to take crap from cops who often know less about the law they then will with a bit of research.
All I tell them is to know their rights. For example, you do not have to roll your window down and let the cops look in. All you have to legally do is hand them your license and auto info. If they write you a ticket all you have to do is open the window enough to slid in their ticket machine, sign it, and hand it back. What amazes me is that cops take offense when I do the legally required actions. Either they do not know the law or they are on some ego trip, either way, my point is simply that I am enforcing my rights. Whether or not that makes the cops job more difficult is beside the point. What is important is that we be allowed protection under the law, even if in response to breaking the law. I don't make the rules.

He goes both ways.

Hey Gigantomachia - instead of acting like a doosh when a cop pulls you over for speeding why not cooperate? Most cops I know only ticket dooshes, and let the cooperative folks move on with a warning.

He's pretty much answered this - because he's not legally required to not be a doosh. It's just who he is.
